See you Sunday!

I hope to see you Sunday at The Knitter's Studio!

Rachael Herron and I will be doing a little reading/talking/signing thing together at the Knitter's Studio in Los Angeles this Sunday (March 21, 2010) from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The shop is located at 8118 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90048. I'm going to bring my knitting and hope you will join us for a fun afternoon of knitting and chatting and book-reading.

I love your little square. It is girly without being excessively so!

Isn't that yarn fun? I made a baby sweater with it. I still have a whole ball left - maybe some blocks for a baby blanket would be a great way to use it up.

i'm using the same type in a different color for a baby blanket i'm crocheting (frantically)! i really like the feel although for crocheting, sometimes it's a bit slippy b/c it's so soft. but i would buy it again in a heart beat!

I hope I can make it! Will you be signing books at all or will it be just more of a hang out and relax sort of deal?

Posted by: Alexis at March 19, 2010 10:29 AM

Alexis, I'll be signing books and so will Rachel :) Hope to see you there!

Posted by: Laurie at March 19, 2010 10:30 AM

You're just teasing me now... I have been trying to find that yarn... seen some great baby gear made with it... be sure to show the final product!

Your fans may want to check the route of Sunday's L.A. Marathon before driving to West Hollywood. There will be street closures everywhere. You too, Laurie...I don't think you'll be able to take a canyon thru to the City from the Valley! Oy!

Posted by: Ellen B. at March 19, 2010 10:49 AM

I'm working on a little baby sweater for the first time, thanks to you. Its a wrap around thingee. I don't know the woman all that well but I wanted to try making something baby and she's preggers. I also have the baby ugg boots waiting next. That might be a better gift for her.

I thought you were going to surprise us with a little felting project. I did not expect a square of garter stitch missy!!

Posted by: sheila at March 19, 2010 10:55 AM

Ellen, I have been worried about that. I have no idea how I'm going to get there since laurel canyon is closed.

I am going to be there, though. Darnit.

Who knew that yarn knits up into such a cute pattern in a block size?

I knit a favorite a tank out of the sunset color way- the added nylon gives it a nice body, rather then the limp or stiff plain acrylic. But because I knit it in the round, the color stripe pattern was narrower.

Posted by: carol at March 19, 2010 11:47 AM

Love that yarn! I have used it twice in two different color ways to knit the infamous fish hat from Knitty.com in toddler size. The self patterning looks fabulous on the fish and it is so soft. I never thought to use it for blocks - that is a great idea. Thanks!

Self-patterning yarn for a blanket square? Brilliant. That will be one fortunate baby. Now if only I could teleport myself across the country...

...wants to know how much yarn and wine it would take for Laurie to come do a signing in Vegas one weekend...

:)

I know - you're doing the book thing on the Down-Low since its not your first and travel can be such a pain and work and cats and geeze, I'm just tired thinking about it.

LA frightens me... even though it is supposedly very very close to us, this southern girl is intimidated by the size and OMG the Traffic and all the "ooh, honey, you don't want to end up in THAT neighborhood." You know, like you see on TV.

:) Have a BLAST, Laurie!! Someday, I will brave The Los Angeles to meet you at one of these gigs...

Posted by: suzi in Vegas at March 19, 2010 01:04 PM

Suzi, just basing this on past reading of the site and the books, I'm guessing that Laurie could only consider Vegas in the winter! Knitting when it's 104 in the shade??

I finished the new book within 48 hrs of receiving it, probably won't make it to Knitter's Studio, but it's a lovely place and I hope y'all have fun. :-)

Gawd, please come to the east coast...we love you here too! Good luck, gal! You rock!

Posted by: Shay at March 19, 2010 01:21 PM

Just started the new book and loving it... Good luck with the next one!

Posted by: Samantha at March 19, 2010 01:26 PM

Count me in! Thanks for the heads-up about the LA marathon being the same day. I just have to come up with a plan for my hubby and kid to keep them occupied while I get some yarn shop luv and meet new friends. See ya!

PS. Still working on the beret. I'm going have to start again tonight. CO of 72 was waaay too big.

LOVE The Bernat Baby (and Junior) Jacquards. I have made over 100 baby hats with them (mainly preemie size).

The blanket should turn out great!

That square is so cute, and I don't even like pink and blue. It makes me happy to look at it.

Posted by: anne at March 19, 2010 05:03 PM

I love that yarn. I made a baby raglan cardigan with the boy colors, blue and green and white, but I love the girl colors. It's so fun to watch the color changes, and I find many variegated yarns disappointing.

i wish you'd come to new york!!!!

Posted by: gayle at March 19, 2010 05:41 PM

I found the street closure map:

If you can believe them, everything should reopen by 2 pm.

Yeah, right. LA does not work on a schedule!

Posted by: JoeBanks at March 19, 2010 06:06 PM

You are going to be great, as usual, Laurie! I hope y'all have the greatest time on Sunday! *hugs*

Posted by: Liz R at March 19, 2010 06:09 PM

Is that the Candy Print? I love that color!!! I tried to get some for my barn manager's impending twins when it was on sale at M*chael's, but some woman beat me to the last skeins! Argh. I was ready to snatch it from her cart when she wasn't looking, but I refrained. Good thing I'm in Ohio, eh? ;-)

Good luck Sunday! Wish I could be there. Hope you come out my way one day.

Would love to attend but live in Phoenix. Also, since I bought the book on my Kindle, there is no way to get it signed! They will have to come up with something for the digital set. Kathy

Have a great time, CAP! You'll be surrounded by people who already like you and lots of lovely yarn (sounds like a perfect evening)!

It's been quite a while now since I've needed to knit something for a baby, but that yarn...makes me want to call up my stepdaughter and say, "Hey, why aren't you pregnant?" LOL!!! She's my only hope! :-)

Posted by: Laurie at March 20, 2010 07:57 AM

good luck everyone with this event, which I cannot come to on account of living in the UK (plus British Airways are on strike), and, more importantly being rubbish at knitting. Have a happy time, and I look forward to reading a post about it.

Don't you acknowledge that it's the best time to get the personal loans, which will make you dreams real.

Since I'm in Boston, I won't be there, but have fun!

Since I missed the self-tanning thread before comments were closed: supposedly one of the best self-tanning lines out there is the new one from St. Tropez. They have a special formula involving something called Aromaguard that makes it damn near reek-free, and supposedly the tan itself is much more even & natural-looking than your typical fake bake. It's rather pricey (from what I can see, most of the products run between $30-$40), but it sounds as if it really might be worth the money, so let us know how it works, OK? (I say this as a naturally pale person--albeit one w/rosacea, which makes me rather ruddy--who overall doesn't mind being pale, but finds that sometimes taking down the "white enough to light up a dark room" color on my legs is good camo when I need to pass for "normal". ;-)

as a veteran maker of blanket squares (17 in ravelympics alone!), unless you are working from a specific pattern may i suggest bordering them in seed stitch -- especially those that will be on the edges. they're easier to sew together than garter, too.

(actually, if you're winging this blanket, consider knitting several long, scarf-like strips and joining them. if you wish, change colors at regular points within the strips to simulate a series of blocks. MUCH less sewing up/risk of blanket fail over time. for a visual aid, see my ravatar.)

I just saw this yarn listed in my latest JoAnn's sales flyer! It looks so soft - - I may have to try some.

Would be there if I wasn't in Michigan! West Michigan is a great place to have a book tour stop. Hope Sunday was fun.

Posted by: Leta at March 21, 2010 07:15 PM

Oh, this is PERFECT, I'm facing kniting a baby blanket, and have never done one!

Laurie, how many skeins should I get, and how many rows did you cast on? Much appreciate any suggestions, as I thought this baby was going to arrive in a couple of MONTHS, and is already here - and already 20 inches long!
