Nothing to see here, move along!

Busy, busy day ahead. This morning in the shower I started stressing out about the time change coming up because I can't take losing an hour! No! I will not go quietly into the daylight savings!

I don't know why we still do this time change thing anyway. Why can't we have one time and keep it all year? I realize we have larger issues facing us as a planet and all, but I am very stuck on the weird time change rules. Everyone has a cause. Apparently this is mine.

I like this guy's cause:

Amen, brother!

Time change is days not weeks away! Seems to me like a really dumb thing to do. It throws everyone's inner clock off and doesn't gain us anything. There are still only 24 hrs in a day.

Posted by: Nancy W at March 10, 2010 09:22 AM

Fine I changed it to days. Thanks for stressing me out MORE.
hah

Posted by: Laurie at March 10, 2010 09:23 AM

HA, I love that license plate! Also I despise the time change.

Posted by: Kristina at March 10, 2010 09:28 AM

What?! There's a time change coming up? Didn't we just have one?

Posted by: Shelly at March 10, 2010 09:29 AM

I am so with you on the time change thing. It kills me a little every year.

Posted by: Samantha at March 10, 2010 09:30 AM

One reason to keep the time change: it drives my sister NUTS! She gets so psycho about it, she has to take Monday off. If you knew her, you'd know why this is really funny, a sort of cosmic payback.

Posted by: Susan at March 10, 2010 09:30 AM

Strangely, I don't mind the time change because it means I don't wake up to really bright sunlight burning my eyes in the morning (I keep the blinds partially opened for my cats' pleasure). Though, I do miss that extra hour of sleep. Can't wait for the winter months to gain it back!

Love the license plate :D

Posted by: Marlene at March 10, 2010 09:31 AM

I agree with homie's license plate...take the guesswork out of driving and please signal! My 3 year-old daughter has started waking up at 5:30 a.m., so this is the first time in my life that I will be looking forward to springing forward. It means we will be up at 6:30, not 5:30. Yay us.

Posted by: Christy M. at March 10, 2010 09:49 AM

The time change never really bothers me, I'm just glad I don't live in one of the weird places in the US that doesn't participate. Can you imagine if where you lived participated and where you worked did not?! I'd be late for work every day for half the year. How confusing. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1.html

Posted by: Candice at March 10, 2010 09:52 AM

For people like me on a very fixed schedule the time change is a major pain in the arse. I just hate it. Hate hate hate it. No year of yes stuff here... well, I say yes to keeping the clocks on one time. so there.

Posted by: Laurie at March 10, 2010 09:58 AM

Until the last few years, Indiana was one of the hold outs and we didn't have "daylight saving time". I hate it even more than I thought I would!! The main reason given for doing it was to be like most of the other states - I always thought we had the best deal, so why not convince other states to stop?

Posted by: ToniC at March 10, 2010 10:04 AM

I actually dig the "spring forward". Seeing as I don't live in the city of eternal summer like you. I really look forward to eking out every last drop of a summer day. I love being outside cutting the grass at 9:00 pm because it's still light out. I love that the sun is not at full retina burning level for my morning commute. Love to listen to my coworkers that never miss their prime time TV shows on Sunday night; but, still show up an hour late to work the Monday after the time change. All in all, it's only one night of one missed hour. Look on the bright side, you can go out for cocktails with your girlfriends that Saturday night and whoop it up and when you tell the story of your late night antics you get to drama it up a bit by saying, "And we didn't leave the club until 3 AM" (even though you left at 2). So chin up, turn that frown upside down and take a deep cleansing breath - Spring is almost here! And for a girl that just finished up another Michigan winter... that is a beautiful thing. Blessings :)

Blame the golfers, and other after work recreationaries (recreationists sounds like a religion). There is big money in sports that people do after work, when there is still enough light to get in another 8 holes before the sun goes down.

Posted by: Lynn at March 10, 2010 10:10 AM

Amen on that license plate!! Purl, you know about Tennessee drivers -- none of 'em know what a signal is -- and I have to schlep 30 miles of Tennessee hwy each way to work & back. 80% of my fellow commuters think they're participating in a NASCAR race; gotta pass everybody NOW NOW NOW!

Posted by: AnnBan at March 10, 2010 10:12 AM

I'm totally with you on the time change - I hate it .. /with the white hot heat of a thousand suns!/ I lived in Indianapolis for 20+ years with no time change, and it was FINE. Work continued, bills were paid, life was lived to the fullest! We are no longer an agrarian society, so why does EVERYONE have to reset all the clocks for the sake of the golfers? WHY I ask you??

Posted by: Janetsu at March 10, 2010 10:14 AM

I HATE the time change! I have been dreading it, because I know it's coming up and it's something I have no control over, so it's not like I can procrastinate it away. Curse you, Benjamin Franklin!

Posted by: Rachael at March 10, 2010 10:18 AM

I know you love LA, but just know that there are some places that don't do daylight savings! I live in Hawaii and we don't change clocks. I know part of Arizona doesn't either and maybe there are others

Posted by: Karen at March 10, 2010 10:22 AM

Surely with all of us who HATE changing the time twice a year, we could DO something about it!

Just a few years ago, thanks to the stupid time change and where our immediate family lived, I nearly went crazy trying to keep it straight. We're in Oregon - Pacific time (like you). MIL - Arizona: Mountain time, but they do not change their clocks. So part of the year she was in our time zone and part of the year one hour later. My parents - Texas: Central time, two hours later. SIL - Indiana: Eastern time, but they don't change clocks either. Two hours ahead or three hours ahead, depending. My sister - Maryland: Eastern time, three hours ahead all the time. ARGGG!

Posted by: Michelle at March 10, 2010 10:26 AM

The time change. It's a farmer thing.

Posted by: Ellen B. at March 10, 2010 10:30 AM

holy crap, i forgot about DST.

Posted by: chook at March 10, 2010 10:30 AM

Ok, so the guy ahead of you wants people to signal their turns, correct? Because he could be dyslexic and is asking for only singles, (for dating? as in dollars?) couldn't he?

I need some caffeine.

Posted by: Kim at March 10, 2010 10:40 AM

Time change is not a major issue for me. I used to really hate it when I lived in Bullhead City, Ariz. and I worked in Laughlin, NV. Ariz stays on mountain time and NV is like CA. It was a major pain in the arse. I love the photos you post and the really like the license plate. I have a friend who never signals and he usually comes up with a lame excuse for not doing so. Arg!!!

Posted by: Tina at March 10, 2010 10:48 AM

I don't know why we still do time changes either. I don't think the farmers even need it anymore! I'm all for helping the farmers, but if THEY don't need it anymore, it's time to stop!!

Posted by: Helena at March 10, 2010 10:51 AM

I was always told DST was designed to keep the kiddies safe as they waited for their buses.

Just don't blame the farmers -- at least not the dairy&sheep people. They hate it too, because the animals refuse to switch their timezones. Try to change your milking schedule, and production goes down.

Posted by: MaryHS in Central CT at March 10, 2010 11:07 AM

come live in Saskatchewan - we Never change our clocks!

Posted by: Terri at March 10, 2010 11:15 AM

I hate DST and my farmer grandpa did too. I have a vivid memory of him pulling his pocket watch out of his overalls when you asked what time it was, and him saying, "you want REAL time or FAST time?" I could taste the disgust and disdain in that "fast" even as a kid.

Posted by: Barbara at March 10, 2010 11:19 AM

Yep, Terri is right! Move to Saskatchewan and you won't have to worry about it ever again. Well, our gov't has been discussing DST and debating it for a while now. I like staying the same....makes us kind of unique! I lived in Alberta for a few years and it damn near killed me each fall and spring! You'll be fine!!

Posted by: Carla at March 10, 2010 11:47 AM

I'm right there with you on the time change. Pick a time and leave it alone!!!! they change it to give more time in the PM with all the extra light, but then I still have to add lights in the AM so where am I saving??? And I'm off timewise for a week.

Posted by: Lynn at March 10, 2010 12:03 PM

I hate "spring forward"! I love my mornings and look forward to daybreak and sunlightall winter. Now I get a slap in the old internal clock that will take me a month to adjust to. I'm tempted to just do everything an hour later by the clock so I don't have to change my daylight schedule. I wonder if I can convince my boss to let me come in and leave work an hour later?

Posted by: Mary at March 10, 2010 12:09 PM

If you lived in Seattle where it is dreary all winter might look forward to it like I do. Going for months with it being dark when we get to work and dark when we get home causes all of us to get cranky and the thought of longer daylight hours in the evening is just plain wonderful. Plus, studies have shown that it actually conserves a small amount of energy because people don't turn on lights as early in the evening.

I mean, yes, it really throws off my sleeping schedule... for like, a week? But I'd rather be able to go for sunlit walks at 8 pm than have a completely uninterrupted sleep schedule.

Posted by: Jessica at March 10, 2010 12:16 PM

The Fall time change is balm to my wounded soul. The Spring time change is what causes the dad-gummed wounds in the first place. It usually takes me 1-2 weeks to recover and during those weeks, well, it is unwise to approach to near to me unless you bring peace offerings of chocolate.

Posted by: KJ at March 10, 2010 12:19 PM

I've lived here in Hoosierville (that would be South Bend, Indiana) for eons now and STILL don't know what the heck time it is. We were one of those oddball places that never changed time. And now we do.

At least I think we do.

Nobody seems to know for sure.

Posted by: Judy in MT at March 10, 2010 12:58 PM

I'm with you on the time change thing... cause truthfully, there's no /real/ reason for the time change anymore. Everyone can claim whatever they want, but really it's just a huge disruption to the circadium rhythm of the body. And just when your body has adjusted to the time change, it's time to change the time again. *sigh* It's frustrating, and I will help your cause! *fistpump*

Posted by: Lee at March 10, 2010 01:08 PM

Love that license plate!! I've so often thought 'nice car, shame you couldn't afford the f'ing indicators!!!' as some eejit cuts me up!

As for daylight saving - I'm happy with the loooong summer evenings :)

I'd rather they forgot to put the clocks back again in winter.

Posted by: Lesley at March 10, 2010 01:09 PM

We used to joke when we lived in California that the way you worked out who were the native born Californians was they did not use their turn signals. Out of staters did, me included.
We will be losing daylight savings soon and that makes me sad cos I am a long days person (and the sun will rise at 6:30 again, too early!).

Posted by: lynne s of oz at March 10, 2010 01:33 PM

If you don't want daylight savings, you will have to move to Arizona. Here, especially in Phoenix, we do not need any more daylight in the summer months. It is 100 degrees or more until about 10:00 each night. . .It will be light at 5:00 AM and in the 80s. . .If you scamper about early and seek air conditioning and covered parking you will survive. You will still be able to knit in wool but you will be called crazy. I speak from experience!
Thanks for all of the advance weather reporting. . . we've been a day or so behind all of your crazy wet winter weather!!

Posted by: Sue at March 10, 2010 02:13 PM

I don't mind "springing forward" because we get more sunshine. I really don't like "falling back."

Posted by: Andree at March 10, 2010 02:20 PM

I hate switching times. The dogs want to get up too early or I have to wake them up. I am tired and off for a week after.
I hear you on the turn signal thing. I swear turn signals are optional equipment in Dallas (probably in all Texas).

Posted by: Lorraine C. at March 10, 2010 03:13 PM

Indiana just started changing their clocks back and forth in the last year or so. We kept this shit at bay for a long time because people were arguing over whether we should be Eastern or Central time. Eastern won, dammit anyway.

It was wonderful not changing clocks. Now those are the good old days.

*sigh*

Posted by: Bratfink at March 10, 2010 03:29 PM

Thanks for the belly laugh! People not using their turnsignals is my pettest peeve. This driver gets kudos from me!

I feel ya with the time change challenge. I feel cheated every year and I'm older than you, so you'd THINK I'd be reconciled by now. But, no.

Posted by: Jenn with 2 Enns at March 10, 2010 03:50 PM

My guess about turn signals is this: The sad reason that most people don't use their turn signals is because people in the "intended" lane will often times see the signal, speed up, and edge the car out of the space they were so considerately signaling about.

I think after The Signalers been edged out like that time and again, when all they were trying to do was be safe and courteous to others on the road, they tend to just give up.

As for the time change, I'm not much of a morning person so the later the sun stays up the more it makes me feel like I have more of the "day" to do things.

Posted by: Dacia at March 10, 2010 04:00 PM

I'm from Indiana, too. I loathe daylight saving time. There's no reason for the sun to still be up at 9:00 pm.

Posted by: Julie at March 10, 2010 04:11 PM

After I moved to Arizona (from So Calif) I had a moment of serendipity when I discovered that AZ does NOT follow DST.

It took a little getting used to. However, being able to actually "see" the sun's progress during the seasons is really worth it (it's much more obvious w/no DST)

The only wrinkle is family still in California. In Summer we're PDST and Winter MST. When it's winter my Dad (in LA) will call and wake me up forgetting that I'm an hour ahead and due to early work schedule (6 am) have already gone to bed! One would think that after 18 years he would have gotten it!

Posted by: Tina at March 10, 2010 04:17 PM

I'm convinced that some people get cheap cars with non-functioning signal lights. Most annoying.

Posted by: Marlyn at March 10, 2010 04:41 PM

I, too, hate the time change. Both ways. It's not like we really need to "save" daylight anymore :P

Posted by: Laurel at March 10, 2010 04:46 PM

I HAAAAATE the time change!! Now it will feel like 5 a.m. when I drag my sorry butt out of bed. My dog absolutely must be walked and its creepy and kind of dark out even now at 6. AARRGGHH!!

Posted by: Teresa at March 10, 2010 05:01 PM

Time changes don't bother me that much, but we're all entitled to our own Crusades, so go for it. :)

Thing about time that annoys me? A.M. and P.M. They're just STUPID. WHY does it go 11 am to 12 pm? 12 comes after 11 and should also be am. It should be 11 am to 12 am and then pm start with 1. Or 11 am to 0 pm. All my life I've been sighed at dramatically (and pityingly) because I always get 12 am and 12 pm confused, because IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

Rant over. Whew. ;)

Posted by: Kelli at March 10, 2010 06:10 PM

So with you on the annoying loss of an hour in the spring. This year though, I'm all discombobulated anyway because I just lost my job a week ago. No where to be in the morning, no reason to go to bed at night. I'm turning into a (non-sparkly, unemployed) vampire.

Posted by: Marilyn at March 10, 2010 06:41 PM

I have never hated anything as a kid in Minnesota so much as spring daylight savings. it's bad enough having to wait in 30 degree weather at the bus stop at 645 am. Then, it starts to get lighter, and lighter, and you're ALMOST waiting in the light of day, which makes everything better... and then...bam. not only do you lose an hour of sleep, but it's pitch dark at the bus again.

still miiight be a bit bitter.

Posted by: marit fp at March 10, 2010 07:24 PM

Ha, love the plate.

I agree... is it really necessary to change our time just because of a drastic change in the lighting outside? Haven't we had electricity long enough to outsmart nature?

Posted by: Lindsay at March 10, 2010 09:00 PM

Hi Laurie,
Funny thing about DST. I said to my boss today, it is time to spring forward and I hate it. He loves it. I want my hour back! But I have to wait till fall.
Also, I read your book and it is really a funny book, I loved it. I walked into the bathroom at work and went to a stall one away from an occupied one. It reminded me of your book and the "security"stall empty between me and the other. Made me smile mid-day. Thank you for that.

Posted by: Lugene at March 10, 2010 09:42 PM

HAAAAAAATE daylight savings time with the white-hot heat of a thousand burning nuns. It's a 20th century adaption, done during war time (WWI) to save on electricity for INDUSTRY. Farmers have always hated it, because the cows and other animals apparently do not have watches and do not care about DST, they still want to be milked, fed, and oh, GET THEIR TUNA at the same time as always. So the cat that used to wake you early at 4:00 AM for tuna now wakes you at 3:00 AM and won't leave you alone, because HE hasn't reset his watch, no sirrreeee. My clock never adjusts, so I spend the entire summer even more exhausted and stressed out than usual. HAAAAAAATE.

Posted by: La BellaDonna at March 11, 2010 04:33 AM

I love the time change! The older I get, the more mole like I become when darkness sets in. I am tired of being ready for bed at 8:00.
And the loss of sleep.... forget that, I am giving up an hour of being awake. Nobody messes with my sleep.

evening lightness rules! :)

Posted by: robinv at March 11, 2010 04:37 AM

I vote with the DST haters. It takes me a week to adjust to the new levels of the sun. I realized as I was walking down the street toward work today that next week, the sun won't be above the horizon and it feels like starting all over again. I think we should just leave it alone. The days will get longer anyway-all that tilting axle and stuff.

Posted by: donna lee at March 11, 2010 04:52 AM

I'm totally with you on the time change! Absolutely hate it. I get up early and enjoy seeing the world wake up, and I can always tell when the time change is coming because it's FINALLY a bit light before I leave for work. Now I'll be driving to work in the dark again. The only good part is it feels like I'm getting off early in the afternoon, but that feeling only lasts for a week or so. Then, come the fall time change, I can barely stay awake past 7:30 at night. I turn on the same number of lights when I get up and when I get home, so it doesn't save me any power. Stupid idea!!!

Posted by: Carol at March 11, 2010 04:57 AM

I oppose the time change because it is confusing and gains us nothing. But I also think the US should adopt the metric system, so I am the queen of unpopular causes.

Posted by: threegoodrats at March 11, 2010 05:03 AM

Moved from Oregon to Colorado and now Cincinnati. I love the license plate you photograhed. That's my mantra. Use your signal please!! OH doesn't use their blinker..I don't get it and it drives me crazy. Hey..that was funny..drives me crazy!
:-).

Posted by: brenda at March 11, 2010 06:05 AM

Where I live in Arizona we don't change the clock but I still stress because I have family and friends on the west and east coasts. West coast changes and is on the same time as me....east coast changes and there is a two rather than one hour difference. Too much for my feeble mind to comprehend......!

Posted by: Lori at March 11, 2010 06:14 AM

Eeek! Time Change!! Thanks for the reminder.
(For those of us with medication issues on 12 hour schedules, we need all the reminders we can get. Some people have trouble with the extra hour in the fall; I have issues with losing the hour now.)

And besides, changing the time is just ... silly, unnecessary and annoying. Also, I'm with Carol, we should go metric.

Posted by: bullwinkle at March 11, 2010 06:46 AM

I am so happy to find so many anti-DST allies since I thought I was the only one because it seems like everyone I know likes the change (except my SO)in spite of the fact that it seems counter-intuitive to change the clocks so the hot sun stays up longer in the summer when we're just waiting for the temps to drop a few degrees so we can enjoy the summer evening a little before midnight. Am I the queen of run-on sentences?

Posted by: Mary at March 11, 2010 07:09 AM

I was going to write to agree with you, Laurie, but I stopped to read the comments - hilarious! Such a simple topic and we all have such adamant opinions! I will be laughing all day - thanks everyone!

And yes, when I lived in CA, I noticed the signal issue - I've lived in 8 states as an adult and CA drivers were the worst of all at signaling. Why is that?!
