Finishing up loose ends

Over the weekend I unearthed some of my unfinished projects, I don't feel any great rush to finish any of them since we still have at least three more months of hot summer left, but maybe I will need to run off to Greenland sometime soon and then I would have use for a nice scarf. Because of course I don't already have any scarves at all. (ahem)

noro-blossom-mistake-rib.jpg

"Mistake" Rib Stitch Scarf
• Cast on stitches in multiples of four, plus three extra stitches. For this scarf, I cast on 31 stitches using Noro Blossom, a yarn which I love so of course it's been discontinued.

• Knit two, purl two all the way across the row. Purl the last stitch of each row. Another variation of this pattern found here.

I like this pattern, it's perfect for this yarn. Also goes well with morning tea!

Love those colors. Yummy Autumn-ish.

purty! but no cat with it?

Oooh, great colors!

Posted by: Kat with a K at August 5, 2008 08:48 AM

very nice!
I love that you love to knit scarves, even tho you live in CA. I live in MI and don't have nearly as many:)

Posted by: suetreiber at August 5, 2008 08:49 AM

I love the pink.

Posted by: trashalou at August 5, 2008 08:59 AM

Love the stripes. I feel your pain about the discontinued yarn. It happens to me too.

Posted by: Vicki at August 5, 2008 09:04 AM

I love that yarn!

Posted by: -R- at August 5, 2008 09:05 AM

Yummy yarn, the ribs really bring out the beautiful texture. Discontinued? Bummer.

Posted by: Janice at August 5, 2008 09:16 AM

So here's a question for ya'll.... My mom thinks I have too many scarves. Every year I give a few away, but I love them all; so it's hard to part with any. How do you handle everyone making fun of your scarf collection? Because honestly, I love knitting, but scarves in particular are great mindless knitting and sometimes I just need that!

Posted by: Amy in StL at August 5, 2008 09:17 AM

Such a Zen photo. Very restful. With the mood I'm in, I think maybe I will make it my work screen saver!

Posted by: Sandy at August 5, 2008 09:17 AM

I have been pounding through UFOs. I unearthed them as part of a big stash cleaning in preparation for moving house. They were SO long forgotten it was like they were new to me all over again! But they have taken half the time to finish.

Plus, I'm moving from a reasonably warm place (Portland, OR) to a VERY cold place (Jackson, WY) so I am looking forward to having occasion to actually wear some of the things I knit and encourage others to do the same!

Love your blog.

Posted by: Carolyn at August 5, 2008 09:19 AM

I love that pattern! I've used it for several scarves and have found that it seems to do pretty things to hand spun, solid colored yarn as well as mill spun, hand painted yarn.

Posted by: BunnyQueen at August 5, 2008 09:21 AM

Love Mistake Rib patterned scarves!

Love Noro yarn!

They are perfect together.

Posted by: Debbie at August 5, 2008 09:28 AM

Yay! Mistake Rib Rules!

Posted by: Andree at August 5, 2008 09:36 AM

For Amy in StL, I love mindless knitting, too. It keeps my hands busy, but lets me concentrate on other things.

But there are a lot of other things that you can knit that are relatively mindless besides scarves.

Shawls can be relatively mindless and I have a pattern available for a fairly mindless wimple. Look around for other patterns.

Posted by: Johann Mitchell at August 5, 2008 09:40 AM

I made this scarf (thanks to you) with some lovely alpaca yarn and I killed it!! Totally my own fault, but still brings a tear to my at the thought. Maybe one day I will try it again. Gives me an excuse to go buy (more) Noro.

Posted by: Catherine at August 5, 2008 09:47 AM

Amy - I made a ginormous version of CAP's Magic Scarf - blocks of 11 instead of 5, 6 or 7 blocks across, out of Lion Brand Wool-ease Thick-n-quick and it was my TV knitting for a couple of months. It's a big warm shoulder-wrap thingy (or it will be, once I block the thing...)

Posted by: Pegkitty at August 5, 2008 10:01 AM

Amy in StL, darling, do what I do when people say I have too many books: look em in the eye and smile, while saying "yes, I'm sure you're right." Meanwhile, in your head, tell them to buzz off (or something similar). Then, (and this is the most important part) just go your own merry way, knitting AS MANY SCARVES AS YOU PLEASE. Who gets to tell you how to spend your own time, anyway? Do what makes you happy. Then do it some more.

Posted by: Julie at August 5, 2008 10:18 AM

heehee, that's not really tea in there.

Posted by: Marilyn at August 5, 2008 10:45 AM

I love the yarn for your scarf! Just my luck about it being discontinued. I've been working on unfinished projects all weekend. I'm attempting a sweater. Oh and by the way, I have a ton of scarves! I love them, and I fully intend to make more. I wear them, so why not?

Posted by: Rachael at August 5, 2008 10:45 AM

How in the world could anyone think they have too many scarves? I like to be able to just take mine off and give it to a friend if they especially seem to like it since, hey, there's about a dozen more of 'em at home :)

Posted by: sally at August 5, 2008 11:14 AM

Hi all - completely off topic, but I need some support....had to put my cat Madison to sleep on Saturday and I am just devastated. Had her for 13 years and yes, she had a great life and we loved her deeply as she did us...it still sucks and hurts so much. Thanks for letting me post...

And Laurie, your yarn is beautiful. I am making a bag with similar colors. So perfect for fall.

Posted by: alli at August 5, 2008 11:49 AM

I could use that scarf at work, along with a hat and mittens. There must be some rule that states when it gets warmer outside, it must get colder inside (at work). BTW, love the yarn.

Posted by: lejarden at August 5, 2008 12:00 PM

I was in San Francisco last week, and folks there were wearing all kinds of winter attire, scarves, hats (I think I even saw some mittens down on the wharf). So Laurie, why don't you just head up the coast a little and you could wear all that knitwear in summer. A lot of the other Wisconsin folks I was out there with had never been to S.F., they couldn't believe it was so cold in summer.

BTW, Al Gore was at our convention, live and in person!!!!!!

Posted by: Paulette at August 5, 2008 12:29 PM

It's never too early to start knitting scarves. With global warming, especially, you never know...Might be winter in late August and then a heat wave in January.

Posted by: Aimee at August 5, 2008 12:40 PM

alli -- internet hugs for the loss of your kitteh. saying goodbye is the suckiest thing ever; last year i said two and i still get teary over my Doodlebugs.

Posted by: smokeyJoe at August 5, 2008 12:48 PM

What gorgeous yarn! Of course they discontinued it!

Posted by: Toni at August 5, 2008 01:20 PM

When I learn how to knit (I am taking a non-credit class at our community college this fall) I am SO going to try this pattern!

Posted by: Liz J in Central Illinois at August 5, 2008 01:37 PM

Those colors are so pretty. I'm not very good at knitting, but your picture is so inviting! It makes me want to sit down for some tea and knitting!

Posted by: Gayle at August 5, 2008 01:45 PM

I have enabled someone at work to start a magic scarf by steering them towards your blog. And lent them your book, which they are enjoying greatly. I made a mistake rib scarf using alternating rows of different colors of Boku (in lieu of Noro) a la Child's Rainbow Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts and Brooklyn Tweed and my dad liked it so much he asked for one. If you have a complementary yarn this might be a good way to eke out your dc'd yarn. I'm just sayin'.

nice scarf! =D

okay, now that i've made this comment related to your post, i have to share with you this entry from the ethicurean about your favorite garden gremlin. i immediately thought of you when i read it. =]

Nosybody Alert: What kind of tea were you drinking? I love tea and have a pantry closet full of it. My favorite? Irish Breakfast tea.

The Nosybody Alert System has just been deactivated. Nothing to see here, folks!

Smokey Joe - thanks for the hugs...greatly appreciated!

Posted by: alli at August 5, 2008 05:04 PM

alli, so very sorry about your kitty. I know how it hurts. I still get teary sometimes thinking of my lost friends, but sometimes I get a smile when I remember them, too. I hope you get to the smiles soon.

Maybe it's time for us to have a Southern California/Arizona all those hot SW states sheep and yarn festival. But we'll have it somewhere cold and bring all our secret woolies. I know, we can all meet at Carolyn's new place in WY. We could knit mittens!!

Oh, wait. You already have.

Posted by: Maureen at August 5, 2008 05:17 PM

Lovely scarf! What size needles did you use?

Posted by: carol at August 5, 2008 05:18 PM

For a while I made scarf after scarf because they were so mindless. I began giving them away as divorce presents -- I had a number of friends and cousins getting divorced around the same time and I figured they could use some cuddling. If you're tired of scarves, how about a felted purse? My daughter's taking knitting lessons and that's what she's working on right now; the best part is that her mistakes will disappear in the felting process.

Posted by: feefifoto at August 5, 2008 05:27 PM

one of these days i'm gonna have to learn how to knit.

mck.

Blossom is discontinued?! Geez, of course it is just when I discover I love it. Noro Silver Thaw is another I've discovered and it is not discontinued yet. Its a great yarn!
Love this stitch pattern. Easy peasy and yet looks involved.

Posted by: Teresa (NC) at August 5, 2008 06:44 PM

That scarf is beautiful. But arrrghhh I just know I will go to my deathbed not understanding how to knit. Tried it a few years ago and got 1/2 of a scarf done but Oy with the counting!

Posted by: Nancy P at August 5, 2008 07:52 PM

I would like to know, too what size are the needles you are using for the scarf. I've started knitting again and would love to try that one.

Posted by: AmberStar at August 5, 2008 09:27 PM

Ah ha! 15"...my favorite size. It makes everything go so much more quickly. Read it on the other page where you made the scarf in January.

Posted by: AmberStar at August 5, 2008 09:30 PM

Alli--I am so, so sorry about your kitty. I lost my Colleen two weeks ago to cancer and I understand the pain you feel. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I had my baby cremated and she is here with me forever. That, and all her pics comfort me. I hope that you can find comfort, as well. (((((hugs)))))

Posted by: Kim at August 6, 2008 12:28 AM

Just looking at that scarf made me long for winter! I taught myself how to crochet to feed my scarf fetish and feed it, I have. I now live in Texas and winter is just not long enough. I do not understand why all the yarn I love gets discontinued. The same thing happened with my favorite scents at Bath and Bodyworks. I am on year ten of my boycott. I stumbled across this post at http://community.stretcher.com/forums/t/5912.aspx and thought of you. "Hi: Instead of buying extra papers, why not ask your friends for their Sunday paper coupon inserts. I do that and get many each week. So, when an item is on a great sale, I have many coupons. This summer, I got many bottles of mustard free. It was on sale for $1, first the small bottle of French's, then the big bottle. I had $.50 coupons. One store doubles them up to $.60 and another store doubles them up to $.50. I sure stocked up have 20+ in my pantry now." I thought you might get a giggle out of it.

Good morning all - thanks to those of you who emailed hugs and support about my kitty Madison. I truly appreciate it! Her ashes will be returned to us and we will have her forever... I just want the pain of not having her PRESENT to go away. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement.

Posted by: alli at August 6, 2008 07:17 AM

Nummage!!!!!! Awesome yarn!!!!!!
I am needing to sell 3 of my "handmade in the USA quilts" if any body is interested...... Thanks! and Thanks for the yarn porn CAP!!!!!!

Posted by: schnoobie at August 6, 2008 09:47 AM

alli, I am sorry to hear about your kitty. Having her ashes with you will be a comfort. The other night when we had a ginormous storm here, I thought of how my Boo-Boo Kitty was terrified of thunder, lightening, etc. and so I picked up her ashes and went into the closet with them. It's what she would have done. She's been gone for almost five years and I still miss her like crazy!

Posted by: Toni at August 6, 2008 01:33 PM

Alli - so sorry about your kitty. I have a Madison also who is about 8. Seeing them get old is the hardest thing.... hugs

Posted by: sandra at August 6, 2008 03:04 PM

I love this pattern! I bought some yummy pumpkin yarn for a scarf back in January and had given up on finding a pattern that was right for it. I've tried four or five different ones and ripped them all out again, but this one looks like a winner :-)

Posted by: Melissa at August 7, 2008 08:13 AM

I've enjoyed the mistake rib scarves I've made in the past, even though I've sometimes gotten bored midway through.

It's nice to pick up something that's been hanging around for a while and just finish it one way or the other.

Posted by: Seanna Lea at August 7, 2008 09:10 AM

Noro Blossom is available here:

http://www.yarnmarket.com/yarn/Noro_Yarn-Blossom_Yarn-622.html

Only 11 skeins left!

Posted by: Heidi at August 7, 2008 12:31 PM

Hi Laurie!

The mistake rib scarf is beautiful, and the Noro is delicious, too bad it's discontinued! I made several scarves with Noro Silk Garden last Christmas and they were very warmly received. I used the mistake rib pattern and made them about 64" long so they could be folded in half around your neck and the ends slipped through the loop, very moody and Irish and romantic like Glen Hansard's scarf in "Once". Happy knitting!
