« Say what...? | Main | So NOW it is finally August first! »

July 31, 2008

Are we there yet? Are we? When do we get there? Why aren't we there yet????

So I am not even going to lie when I tell you I woke up today relieved that The July Of My Discontent was over because ya'll, I need a break from the evil and also the mundane, the expensive, the nasty, the anxiety and "the zit that came to visit but never went home and might be moving in and building a subdivision."

That is what July has been.

But because of math and barometric pressure and the periodic table and also The Administration, July now has thirty-one days! Thirty-one! Like flavors, only they are all brown and taste like poop!

And even though I know tomorrow is August first, finally and also again August first which I mistakenly thought was today, oh the foolishness of the wee-minded, I am still cowering slightly in fear of what else this muckracking slaberdashery month will bring. So far this week alone we have had an earthquake, a tense very bad meeting, important emails met with TOTAL COMPLETE SILENCE, a fashion faux pas so ignorant I won't even go into details except trust me when I advise you that SCOTCH TAPE WILL NOT HOLD YOUR PANTS UP.

Anyway. That is all I have to say. I am ready for August now.

Again.

Good morning! You just reminded me that I missed sending my brother a birthday card. Bad Jo. Bad July!

Posted by: JoP at July 31, 2008 06:59 AM

Oh my - - your week sounds as horrible as mine has been! July has been a very bad month here at Education Central, and I am very, very afraid that August will not bring the swift relief I have been hoping and praying for . . .*sigh*

Maybe I shoud take Soba's cue and sleep through the month of August, and just hope that September brings better things? :-)

Hang in there, Laurie. And I will also.

I thought nothing could be as bad as December '07 was for me. Then I met June and July of '08 and I realized just how wrong I was. I am also ready for August.

Posted by: Bevvy at July 31, 2008 07:22 AM

I've had/am having the week from hades too - it must cover the country from California to Massachusetts.

Posted by: Leslie in Mass at July 31, 2008 07:27 AM

I'm with the cats...let's just get comfortable and sleep through the rest of it! Here's to a great 08/08!

Posted by: karen at July 31, 2008 07:30 AM

I felt the same way about March so I feel your pain!

Posted by: Lesli at July 31, 2008 07:31 AM

It must be a bad month in the cosmos for us all. Fingers crossed for a great August.

The best, most important advice ever:

Either it has just been a truly horrible month, or only people who had a bad are commenting...but I second (or eighth as the case may be).

C'mon August. Bring us all something fantastic.

Posted by: Beth at July 31, 2008 07:40 AM

Early in the month, I wanted to sleep until it was over. Actually, I kind of felt that way in June, too. Viva August!

Posted by: Shelly at July 31, 2008 07:44 AM

I had a similar wardrobe malfunction but it was with a skirt whose elastic gave out. I was so happy because I thought I'd suddenly dropped so much weight that my skirt was falling down! I went to weigh myself on the scale at work, feeling very smug. Duh.

Posted by: Lety Booth at July 31, 2008 08:01 AM

Staples will work if you don't make any sudden moves...

Posted by: Sue-Ellen at July 31, 2008 08:03 AM

My bad July started in November of last year. Enough already! And I have a birthday-of-large-numbers next week.....so maybe after THAT things will look up (otherwise, I am hibernating until 2009...do not wake the sleeping bear!)

Posted by: Stephanie in Tennessee at July 31, 2008 08:04 AM

Scotch tape might not work but I bet duct tape would.

And just remember...not only is tomorrow August 1st but it's also a Friday. Can things get much better than that? I submit that they cannot!

Posted by: Melissa at July 31, 2008 08:05 AM

Hey it could be worse you could be that poor model in the American apparel swim ad in your sidebar. I'm sure she's has a lovely figure but that suit makes her look flatchested and hippy.

Oh, and really? You're going to tease with the scotch tape anecdote but not share? Unfair!

Posted by: Amy in StL at July 31, 2008 08:08 AM

I agree with Melissa about the duct tape. Is there anything that tape can't do?? Plus it may double as an accent material on the pants.

June & July were really, *Really* rough. But I've seen steady improvement - and have reason to believe that August will be teh awesome.

Here's to tomorrow! (insert song from Annie here)

Posted by: Julianne at July 31, 2008 08:17 AM

Tomorrow is Aug 1, a Friday AND payday for some of us!

Just wondering about the size of the cat bed. . . small bed or LARGE cat? Is he comfy?

Posted by: Stine at July 31, 2008 08:18 AM

July has been a very long, very bad month. The long holiday weekend seems like it was so long ago, it was practically last year.

Not only is it still July, it is also Thursday which is not Friday, however hard I try to make it so.

Posted by: Anne at July 31, 2008 08:28 AM

Ah, Laurie, surely things aren't that bad? You make it sound so amusing! I loved the line about the flavors,"Only they are all brown and taste like poop." Priceless! Here's another line; "Tomorrow is another day."

Posted by: sheila at July 31, 2008 08:32 AM

I stapled my pants hem once when it fell out. That didn't work very well either. :)

Posted by: Andrea at July 31, 2008 08:36 AM

You don't know from bad July's:

July 5 - close brother-like friend commits suicide in PV

July 6 - future MIL has heart attack in UK

July 8 - family member dies of cancer in DC

I was ready to hide under the bed by mid-July! :(

Posted by: Juliana at July 31, 2008 08:39 AM

Considering I just got laid off this lovely July, and I've tossed over 80 resumes into the black pit of cyberspace with nary a response, yeah, I'm ready for July to be over. I guess I could hope August will be better, but I'm not holding my breath...

Posted by: Terri at July 31, 2008 08:39 AM

yeah, enough July already!
(I didn't have a particularly bad month...August is just closer to the beginning of school again )

Posted by: suetreiber at July 31, 2008 08:50 AM

i've found staples to be very effective for hems that are falling.

:)

Posted by: smokeyJoe at July 31, 2008 08:57 AM

Scotch tape may not hold up your pants but if you roll enough around your hand it will suffice as a lint roller when you've left the house without realizing your dryer went phooey and your ass is covered in lint.

February is my July... I suspect there is a curse.
Last July, though, my hot water tank exploded, and this July the washing machine bit the bullet. Happily, that is the landlord's headache and not mine (financially speaking, anyway).
And let me join with others in wanting to hear the story about your pants! Please?

Posted by: Julie at July 31, 2008 09:07 AM

Oh dear. Sorry for the bad month. And I'm sorry that today isn't August 1. Can we blame it on Dick Cheney? It just seems like something sneaky and underhanded that he would do to us July-haters.

And sweetie? I'm going to send you a sewing kit for the office. Tape, staples and paper clips just don't cut it for anyone over a size 0.

Hang in there!

(I work in a theater and gaf[fers]tape has saved many a wardrobe malfunction.) Huzzah! for August.

Posted by: Marilyn at July 31, 2008 09:42 AM

Scotch tape also will not hold your bed boards in place on the iron bed frame.
I still have not found out what will.

Posted by: Alma at July 31, 2008 09:57 AM

I also thought today was Aug. 1 and was very surprised to learn that it was in fact still July. sigh.
Here's to a fabulous August!

Posted by: Frances at July 31, 2008 09:59 AM

Binder clips worked very well the day the drawstring in my skirt broke; sneaking to the bathroom with a handful of them while holding my skirt up, less so. And I didn't make any sudden moves for the rest of the day...

Hang in there! Soba's got the right idea.

Ooh lady, I feel your pain. Literally. Sorry if this is TMI, but a few weeks ago I had a zit INSIDE my nose that was so painful and persistent, I nicknamed it "Nose-feratu" and also "Kraka-nosa the Volcano." I don't think it was all that obvious to others -- at least no one looked startled and exclaimed "OH MY GOD WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR FACE?" but it felt like it should be visible from the Space Shuttle. "OH MY GOD WHAT'S WRONG WITH SOUTHERN MINNESOTA?"

I vote for duct tape and also blaming Dick Cheney.

Apparently, I am unable to comment on your earthquake entry. *sigh*

We were at Disneyland/California Adventure when the earthquake hit, had just gotten off of California Screamin', in fact. I don't think I've ever seen people get out of a line to a ride quite so fast!

It was an interesting quake, and from what I've read it was closer to the surface. Glad to hear you were able to ride it out, and also that there weren't any major injuries or damage in the LA area.

Posted by: Delaney at July 31, 2008 12:06 PM

Maybe this will make you smile.

I had a dream about you last night! I was in a hallway of a community college studying at a table, and I found a spiral notebook, one of the big 5 subject kind with built in pocket pages, and it was FULL of stuff that had been written down. The pages were like falling out, and you could tell that whoever lost it was likely freaking out. So, I gave it to the instructor and he said "Oh I recognize that...it's Laurie Perrys" and then he called your name, and you walked out of a classroom.

And I was all excited to meet you and freaking out, and then we hugged and both kinda looked at each other and said "Awww...inappropriate hug" awkwardly at the same time.

And then I woke up...but suffice it to say, you were GLAD to have the notebook back!

We in the Northeast are never without duct tape. (Real duct tape --not the imitators.)

It even works on car mufflers--it would laugh at the challenge of securing pants or skirts. It has held my unhemmed jacket sleeves through at least one washing, and we'll see how the next one goes.. (Just wind some around a pencil, and keep it in your purse. It may even help fix the bus the next time it breaks down.)

Posted by: Carol at July 31, 2008 12:17 PM

1. The weather has been peachy most of the month on the Oregon coast and VERY green, not brown at all!
2. Did you check your SENT emails to see that the important emails actually made it out? I'm sure you did.
3. Masking tape is holding up my pant hems up as we speak! Don't know if it would work to hold the entire pants up though.

I'm sure August will be lovely and gold coins will rain down from the sky. Let's hope so anyway.

Posted by: plain jane at July 31, 2008 01:30 PM

Scotch Tape...whaaat? bwahahaha, thanks for that since I usually stick with stitch witchery which really bad to use when one is tired and it is dark...

Posted by: Deanna McNeil at July 31, 2008 02:23 PM

I have ALWAYS hated July. Worse than the ides of March. Really.

Posted by: elisabeth at July 31, 2008 02:25 PM

Scotch-tape will not hold your pants up, but rubber bands will...I ordered new work pants online and they were slightly too big, but I didn't realize this until halfway through a work day. So while attempting latte-making, I took a whole bunch of rubberbands and looped them from one belt loop to my front button, then on the other side belt loop to my front button, and my pants stayed (rediculously) up all day...thank goodness for my apron!!

I feel equally disgusted with July, for all reasons, including pant/office supply fiascos.

Kitties have the right idea! Don't worry, Laurie, August has to be better!

Posted by: Elaina at July 31, 2008 03:18 PM

i dunno -- where i work, rumors are flying about august buyouts-on-the-cheap or maybe even layoffs. that would make my sucky july look really good.

but at least our street-salvage kitten is a happy camper. he's behind the monitor as i type, stretching to the top of the hutch, purring madly, and then standing between me and the monitor, knocking stuff off in my lap.

Your scotch tape incident reminds me of my staple incident. I was bartending at a busy pub in Chicago on a Friday evening while I heard a pop. I felt a cool breeze from within and realized my bra had just broken. I grabbed a friend and a stapler. Viola! Just goes to show you that all you need in life is a friend and a stapler. lol.

I know you have your own problems with crappy July and all, but I just had to get up out of bed and come look to see what style knitted scarf is just it this year. I've started trying to get started again and my sister just steamrollered me with the little tiny skinny scarf thing and I was nearly in tears because I'm in the middle of a medium wide chunky knit scarf that I just think is cool as hell. Even my husband said he thought it would be beautiful! He never says anything like that. I didn't find an answer about size, style, whatever, but I did find your saying of "It's yarn, ya'll." and so thank you so very much for saving my sanity. I'd nearly forgotten the true aspect of the whole scarf thing...enjoy making it. Then I read the hat post and am in a muddle again, but hell, I can pick up a hat at Kohls or something instead of making myself crazy over yarn. Thanks for being there in the middle of the night when it just got to be too much stress...and thanks for being there all together.

A good Southern girl like you should never go anywhere without 100% gen-you-wine Duct Tape.

This July has been mixed for me (buried a dear cousin, then got three new grandniece/nephews in TEN DAYS, and two surgeries on one of our cats to remove mast cell cancers).

I dread Augusy every ear, it's my Accursed Month of Ill Tidings and I do all kinds of superstitous things on the first to ward off evil. May is the other accursed month in my life.

Yes, far too many stresses in July. Enough so that I think I might be losing my hair! A major shake up at work including a new manager who likes to create chaos, my best friend's dad (like a 2nd dad to me) in the hospital, and another good friend's brother just came out which wouldn't be a big deal except it was a complete shock since he has a wife and two small children. I keep telling my husband that I can't wait until fall begins.

Clear hockey tape makes a great, slightly stretchy, makeshift belt and comes on a nice big roll that fits nicely in a tote bag. Just sayin'. It is also great for getting blonde dog hairs off black pants and black cat hairs off a white blouse and is strong enough to hold up a big nylon banner if someone "forgets" to bring the bulldog clips that are supposed to hold it up.

Yep, July was a bad cosmos month. Must be solar flares... or collective consciousness... or... something.

Let's just say that last week I accidentally stomped on a perfectly good friend's feelings and almost runied the opportunity to be hired for the perfect job due to the amount of stress-induced freak-out in my general persona last week. I had no wardrobe malfunctions...that I'm aware of... and it's definitely better that way. I rarely stress quite like that, but when I do something, I go whole-hog.

Here's to a clean-sheet month!!!
