Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

Congratulations to Suzanne R. from Hillsboro, Oregon who won the Big Huge Sweepstakes! She and her hubby James will be coming to Los Angeles this weekend and enduring painful chitchat with one crazy cat lady and then going to the signing in Mission Viejo! My Grandma will be there and my Aunt Pam, too, so it's like saying hey to the family.

If you would also like to meet a crazy cat lady and relations and ask me your burning questions such as "Why was La Soba not featured on the cover of the book?" feel free to stop by ...

Saturday, January 19th, 2008 BORDERS -- 1:00 PM (Reading & signing) at 25222 El Paseo in Mission Viejo, CA 92691 (Phone: 949.367.0005) and click here for a map -->

Also, I hope the weather improves for our winner because this morning the express bus was navigating through fog soup all the way to downtown:

We're also supposed to have sixty-mile-per-hour winds this afternoon. I hope my bangs get that windblown sexy look and not the "Oh wow, she's like the twin of that Little Rascals dude..." look. It could go either way.

Thank you to everyone who entered the sweepstakes. As you may recall, this sweepstakes was run by an outside company who was kind enough to sponsor it all, do the fulfillment and alert the winners! If you won a prize it should be arriving to you soon. Luckily this time around it is not me responsible for getting anything in the mail, because we know how well that usually turns out. Ahem. I do know at least two of the people who were notified for other prizes have not responded back yet so if you entered to win, check your email! Hey, maybe I should take my own advice... I am only 62 weeks behind on email. This will be the year I get it together, I promise I promise all over again. Sigh.

And thank you to my awesome contest winner of Oregon for agreeing to meet with me, a potentially sweaty nervous wreck who is not great at meeting strangers but excited to say hey with you all the same! I plan to rub your head in hopes that some of your winner's luck mojo will be contagious... just FYI ....

Super lucky Suzanne gets a "laying on of hands" from CAP!

Posted by: Marilyn at January 16, 2008 09:31 AM

First! Ha! Now I just have to get a picture captioned on the ICHC page, and I'll be happy forever.

Posted by: Marilyn at January 16, 2008 09:32 AM

Where is everybody. Working or something??

Posted by: Marilyn at January 16, 2008 09:33 AM

hello?

Posted by: Marilyn at January 16, 2008 09:34 AM

Faith? Monkeygrrl? Psychomom? Dale? Jill of the 7 cats? crap. I am legend.

Posted by: Marilyn at January 16, 2008 09:37 AM

Pea soup indeed! (maybe you could crockpot some of that up! yummmm!)

Posted by: Tai at January 16, 2008 09:39 AM

Well right hometown, but it would have been funner if it was me. Yay Suzanne, and don't worry Laurie, folks from Hillsboro, OR are laid back and fun. And also really glad to get out of the freezing fog!

Posted by: Laurie D. at January 16, 2008 09:41 AM

Oh good, I'm not alone. I thought I'd gotten stuck in a innernets vortex. Have fun this weekend Laurie.

Posted by: Marilyn at January 16, 2008 09:45 AM

OK. Just as well that I didn't win because I have to be in Sacramento this weekend. But what about Stitches West? Still planning to be there?

Posted by: Dagny at January 16, 2008 09:45 AM

Hi Marilyn! Hi Laurie! Hi World!

I'm here lurking but I was called out so I'm making a quick appearance then back to work because I'm not the winner and don't get to go to sunny, I mean cloudy California.

And we are freezing here in the desert. Global Warming? Not here.

Posted by: psychomom at January 16, 2008 09:48 AM

Hi guys!

Dagny -- I am not coming to Stitches West. I have a conflicting thing I'm doing (that is not book related in any way, just conflicting.) I am a little sad to miss loading up on the huge amounts of yarn I always hear Ellen Bloom talking about...!

Posted by: laurie at January 16, 2008 09:59 AM

Congrats to all! You'll have a GREAT time, despite the weather that shows up!
.

Posted by: The Other Ruth at January 16, 2008 10:11 AM

Aw, Suzanne is sooo lucky! I was listed as a daily winner, but I never did receive an email confirming it...so I hope they didn't have to notify the Cheetos/Book winners. Now I'm scared...I have been bragging to everyone!

Have a great visit with the big winner!

Posted by: Karen at January 16, 2008 10:34 AM

yum...fog soup.My favorite.

Posted by: suetreiber at January 16, 2008 10:37 AM

I didn't win? I'm so sad. Scre...I mean congratulations, Suzanne!

I'm not bitter. Nope. Not one bit.

Posted by: Mary in Boston at January 16, 2008 10:38 AM

Oh, Laurie-
I saw my name on the list of winners before Christmas, and have been faithfully watching for a notification of some sort. Have I missed something? I so do NOT want to miss out. I even took your book off my Christmas list because I had won!
-Becky (Fort Collins)

Posted by: Becky at January 16, 2008 10:43 AM

Congrats Suzanne...you are one lucky dog! Y'all have fun, now...ya hear?

For the rest of us, I still think that we need to plan a CAP gathering of some sort. The Crazy Aunt Purl Conference? The CAP Fan Club Jamboree?

Posted by: aileen at January 16, 2008 10:50 AM

I'm going to have to google the Little Rascals dude to get the visual on that one.

Posted by: Courtney at January 16, 2008 10:52 AM

Bah, don't worry about the weather. If she's a true Oregonian she won't mind :) --Zarah (from Portland, OR)

Posted by: Zarah at January 16, 2008 10:58 AM

Congratulations to the grand winner. I seem to have won a Cheetos pack but never received an email from them. (Ruth in Houston)
Also - I'm up for the CAP Conference.
Where & when?

Posted by: Ruth at January 16, 2008 11:00 AM

I'll let the contest folks know about the alerting issues LOL. I am so glad I am not running the sweepstakes! I suck at that sort of management of data. Doing the cat sweaters about keeled me, seriously.

Posted by: laurie at January 16, 2008 11:10 AM

With enough hairspray, bangs are as solid as the Rocky Mountains. ;-)

Posted by: Mary in Virginia at January 16, 2008 11:52 AM

Fortunately for you the following things are true:

#1. The 547 mph winds will not be blowing through your office, hence bangs will be OK at work.
#2. TSA does not screen your express bus for 3 oz liquids so you can pack as big a can of hairspray as necessary to adjust bangs upon arrival at work. In the bathroom. That you take pictures in. All the time.

Next sweepstakes winner should win a crockpot!

Posted by: Laurie (too) at January 16, 2008 12:56 PM

Congrats to Suzanne! Have fun for all of us.

There's something romantic about fog, as long as one is on dry land, of course. I'll try to think blue-sky thoughts for Suzanne and her plane, however.

Posted by: Lucia at January 16, 2008 01:21 PM

Hi Marilyn! Hi Laurie! Congrats Suzanne! Ya'll have fun this weekend! Don't freak out Laurie or she'll never speak to strangers again. And she's come so far.

Posted by: Jill of the 7 cats at January 16, 2008 01:28 PM

Hey ride the bus carefully in that soup. Though, you haven't really seen fog until you've seen the tule fogs in the San Joaquin Valley. Can't see a foot in front of you! Scary. Congrats to the winners, too!

You, Laurie, rock... as always. BTW that turkey stew looks fabulous.

I'm a day late in getting an EASY crockpot recipe to you. And since crockpot cooking is already easy, you can imagine the easiness factor of an EASY crockpot recipe.

1. Throw some bone-in, skin on chicken in the crockpot.
2. Pour your favorite pasta sauce on it.
3. Let it cook all day on low.

That's IT! I heard this one on Martha Stewart radio, and although it came from a call-in contributor, I figure just the fact that it was on Martha Stewart radio infers some sort of greatness to it. And if not, who cares. My husband (aka Mr. Picky) loves it.

You can make the meal a little bigger by boiling some pasta to go with it. You can make the meal a little better by having a nice cabernet with it.

Posted by: christi at January 16, 2008 03:00 PM

Actually Christi, I'm thinking that would be good with any kind of meat...(as long as it cooks to the right internal temperature). My grandmother used to make meat sauce with pork that ended up so tender it just fell off of the bones (meaning we might find some bones in the sauce...)

Congrats on winning, Suzanne!

Posted by: Tami at January 16, 2008 04:21 PM

Coming to see you in Mission Viejo sounds like fun! I would have entered the contest if the 19th wasn't the same day as the Portland Yarn Crawl! A bunch of us Seattle knittin' type gals are taking the train down to Portland to meet up with some Portland knittin' gals to prowl yarn shops, bookstores and places to eat! Can't wait, I've never been on a train! Does that sound 10-year-old enough?

Posted by: Alyson at January 16, 2008 05:44 PM

we like to make "melted chicken" in the crockpot.

put salt and pepper in/on a whole chicken (cleaned, silly -- and take the liver out of the little packet of gizzard, etc. and either cook it separately (yum) or discard it or feed it to your cats, who will adore you) and put it into your crockpot breast up, with about a cup of water. put the lid on and set the crockpot on high for an hour or two and then on low for at least 6 hours, during which you DO NOT remove the lid.

when you take the chicken out, the meat should fall off the bones, ready for use in whatever, and once the fat has been skimmed off, you have the start of soup.

I am still pinching myself to make sure this is real -- thank you so much for picking me as winner of your great sweepstakes! I'm so excited about the trip and am really looking forward to meeting you, Laurie!!

Posted by: Suzanne Reichel at January 16, 2008 10:40 PM

Feh! Ya call that fog?! I should send you some British fog, the proper stuff - visibility down to 10 ft or less! Not likely ATM though - very mild and extremely wet n' flooded here, and absolutely no chance of snow. Bah!

:)

I'd've taken part in the sweepstakes but I'm on the wrong continent, dammit! Oh well, never mind eh?! When're ya doing a UK tour then? Eh? Eh?! :)

Posted by: Jane at January 17, 2008 03:19 AM

Being a big grown-up girl I'd like to extend my congratulations to Suzanne.
Being me--I'm cryyyyyyyyyyyyyying, boy i really wanted to win! I've never wanted to meet an author like wanting to meet Laurie--okay, that sounds like it could be warped, but not meaning it that way. Laurie, reading your book is inspiring for me, you have no idea! I'll just keep hoping you make it out here to NJ and then I'll get to meet you, even if I've got to stand on line waiting and waiting...in the meantime, I'm going to stay up on this blog. Hey, are there "Stitch n B**ch" groups all over?
Have fun Suzanne, really, I mean it truly, you lucky dawg. I mean lucky cat...

Add me to the list of people whose names appeared on the winner's list and haven't heard anything. Congrats Suzanne - have a glass of wine for the rest of us!!

Lucky for you your hair isn't frizzy like Bossy's hair because bangs + fog = fangs

Posted by: Bossy at January 17, 2008 09:16 AM

Am I the only one who noticed that there's a huge freakin' UFO in that first picture? :) With all due respect, I think that story rates even higher than your book signing! Thank you for making history in all sorts of ways, including proving that there are "others" out there!

Hi! I usually just lurk but I too love my crock pot so I wanted to share 2 easy yummy recipes with you.
The first is take 4 chicken breasts thrown in a jar of salsa and cook. Drain extra liquid and throw it on flour taco shells with your fav topping (cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomato) and it makes a inexpencive and good meal.
The 2nd is get a turkey tenderloin (pork works too) chop up potatos, 1/2 onion add some whole mushrooms, and baby carrots, a cup or so of broth and this makes a great main dish....I usually serve it with rice. (They have microwave minute rice now.)
Both of these are good to throw in the crock pot and have done by the time I get home from work. I hope you enjoy them.:-)

Posted by: MIchelle at January 19, 2008 03:18 PM

Yes, now I am embarassed that my crock pot comment posted here instead of under the crock pot post.....*sigh*
