Sleeping on the job...

After a long day of eating, pooping, sleeping and attacking low-lying ornaments on the tree, these two suspects tried to get off by SLEEPING and CUDDLING and I will have none of it! None of it I tell you!
Also, why do they fall asleep as soon as I get home and then spring to life with vigor and energy at 3 a.m.? Why? Also, why was I not a fish person instead of a four-legged-animal person?
Just wondering.
But they are awfully cute.

Oh yes they are! Cute, cute, cute!!!

Also, pink Bob toes!
Posted by: Leeny at December 11, 2007 10:36 AM
Awww! They're so snuggly looking! And Bob looks a bit devilish in that picture. Has he been hanging out with the Soba too much lately? :)
Posted by: heidi at December 11, 2007 10:38 AM
YES! KITTIES! I was just thinking to myself, "I've had enough of celeb caterpillar brows! I need CRAZY CUTE & CUDDLY KITTIES!" And of course you delivered the goods. Thanks!

Yay! Cat pics. Love the little white tippy-toes. (I think fish are for eating.)
Posted by: Marilyn at December 11, 2007 10:40 AM
Oh...do they talk to you at 3am? My cat does. He decides he would like to tell me something and jumps on my head and starts meowing. It's hard to be mad when they are so cute, though.
btw - what are your 2 lovelies lying on top of? The blanket? couch? with the bright pink design??? It's super cute!!!!
Posted by: Amy at December 11, 2007 10:44 AM
Our two cats and two dogs just HAD to hang out on my side of the bed last night. Hubby's side? Empty. Me? Up every hour on the hour due to some pet activity.
Posted by: Morticcia at December 11, 2007 10:45 AM
Those cattens are so cute!
Reason One for playing during sleep time - TOO much daytime napping. My suggestion is to set an alarm clock to go off periodically throughout the day. You can even make it random so they wouldn't get used to it and just snooze through.
Reason Two for playing during sleep time - they are cats. Suggest you dress them in parrot costumes then when it is darl slip a cloth over their heads and they will just fall asleep.
Hope this helps and please do not phone R.S.P.C.A. on me.
Many thanks. ;-)

Hmm.... actually mean darK not darL (although always good to slip in a Fruedian Australianism.)
Posted by: trashalou at December 11, 2007 10:50 AM
Those cute faces could not have done anything wrong. And you just need to learn how to enter coma sleep like I do. I see signs in the morning that B&N have been playing but do not hear it anymore. Until Boris starts nudging me in my face to let me know that he would like to be fed. Usually around 4:30 a.m. And if I sleep through this and my alarm, then Natasha will claw my feet to let me know that I have overslept.
Posted by: Dagny at December 11, 2007 11:01 AM
Tell ya what...You tell me why my 11yr old cat needs to be fed, by mama of course, every morning at 2 am, and I'll tell ya why yours are acting so innocent :-) andwanting to play at 3 am! Anyways enjy em they are all so cute!
Posted by: Danielle from SW Missouri at December 11, 2007 11:05 AM
okay, I know I am in the minority, but my cats are shut out at night. SHUT OUT! That means no kitties in the bedroom, period. (they never shared the pillows nicely and were prone to pouncing)
But I do pay for it during the day, when they all follow me everywhere and talk constantly.
Posted by: suetreiber at December 11, 2007 11:08 AM
Cats are kinky!
Posted by: dotty at December 11, 2007 11:08 AM
One word - Earplugs. Although I don't wear them all the time because the cats seem depressed when I don't respond to their 4AM "communications." Seriously we can't have depressed cats now can we!
Posted by: cat at December 11, 2007 11:15 AM
It isn't sleep..
It is just re-charging.
Says me, the owner of a 7 month old kitten... *sigh* I've just given in to letting him in the bedroom at 3 a.m. so he stops mewrrrowring at the door.
Posted by: Keridwen at December 11, 2007 11:27 AM
Of course they do that! It's better than my dog who sleeps most of the day and then wants to play all evening while I'm knitting AND half the night while I'm sleeping.
Posted by: Amy in StL at December 11, 2007 11:41 AM
So cute!!!!
I am not doing a tree this year due to my toddler, but I know my kitties will miss playing with the ornaments and barfing on my tree skirt!!
BTW - your book is on my Christmas list. IT WILL BE MINE.
:)

My first post and, of course, it's about the kitties! Too cute and soooo sleepy. I, too, get in those moods when I walk through a room again and my kitty is still stretched out in the exact same position and I declare "No more nap for you", however it won't be long before napping is resumed.
Had to tell you, Laurie, we've had an ice storm this weekend and I've spent several cozy hours curled up finally reading the archives (just discovered you a few months ago)- thank you for sharing your adventures in knitting and in life.

my kitties are FOREVER decided that it is time to play or chew on the dog, or fight with each other or play with that plastic grocery bag I forgot to put away exactly EIGHT SECONDS AFTER I FALL ASLEEP. Never before bed. never during the day. Never as soon as I lay down in bed but havne't gotten to sleep yet. always directly after I fall asleep.
Also- when they actually decide to fight with EACH OTHER- as in, loud hisses and REEEOOOOWWWW and claws, it is always when they are all sitting on my lap at the same time. Or when they are laying on my while I am asleep.
I have a scar on my eyelid from when one of the kitties used my face as a CAT-apult. (god! I'm hilarious!!!) That woke up eveyone in our apartment building and I couldn't wear makeup for two weeks!

Well fish aren't as cuddly. So I can see why not.

I had a roommate long ago whose cat would stick his arm under my closed bedroom door from the hallway and feel around until he could pull at the door stop spring so that it went "SRPONGGGG.......SPRONNNGGGGGGG..." over and over again. Needless to say it was a very effective way of getting me to let him in my room. Now I live alone with 3 cats who sleep on my head and kick each others' @$$es all night long. No wonder I'm so tired during the day! ^..^

Geez - I do not know which is worse: Being attacked by six kittens all night long or three Pekingese!
I had cats for so many years - none were particularly naughty except the kittens. However, not much beats a sopping wet DOG tongue licking you IN YOUR MOUTH while you are sleeping!!! Yummy!
Of course the dogs have to circle around and nest, ie: they have to walk on your bladder or step on your throat in order to get comfortable. GACK!
But I tell you what - I wouldn't give them up for the whole world! I only wish to someday be half the person my dogs believe me to be...
Posted by: Martha With Chaps at December 11, 2007 12:47 PM
Because they are nocturnal, of course. Not to mention evil. Also unbelievably cute and feline.
Do they have spirited political debates in your bedroom at 3 am?
Posted by: Lucia at December 11, 2007 12:56 PM
Bob is showing me his toes, because he knows I cannot resist them and I will never believe any vicious lies you tell about him, as long as I can see his toes. :)
Frankie is totally irresistible, too. But...Bob toes!!
Posted by: jules at December 11, 2007 01:01 PM
oh i am glad to know that it isn't just my kitties who go hog wild at 3 am - galloping to and fro and sounding more like a herd of elephants than 2 cats, play fighting, real fighting, much hissing and growling, then loud thumps as one manages to wrestle the other one to the floor. i am sure that they are both sleeping peacefully right at this very moment (3pm in TN) -to be all the more rested for tonight's smackdown. if they weren't so darn cute i wouldn't stand for it...but just at the moment i about to snap they come in for the sweetest cuddle, with their head on my shoulder, purring away...and i am a goner. they are clearly in charge at my house!!

Kitty faces! Adorable.

My Three Terrors (aka my 3 eight-month old orange tabby kittens) wake up around 11PM and proceed to bounce off the walls while my husband and I are trying to sleep. When we try to throw them out of our room, they run and hide under the bed. After we give up and go back to bed, they start in again. And so on, and so on, and so on. Every single night.
I always get the feeling that the dog watches this show every night and smiles herself to sleep.
Posted by: Liz R at December 11, 2007 01:14 PM
hee hee...we learned early on that we only put the cheap non-breakable ornaments on the bottom half of the tree. The four-legged furry ones like to eat them and bat them off otherwise...

Cute cats. Okay, let's talk about me. So imagine my SURPRISE when I click on the 'list of daily winners' link...scroll, scroll...THAT'S ME ON NOVEMBER 27TH!!!!!! I got so excited I nearly choked on my edamame (kind of like okra, but..not.) So now, seriously, what does that mean? What happens to us daily winners? Can you tell I'm accustomed to being a NOT-winner? Do all us of daily winners get put in a pot then go back to being NOT-winners when one BIG winner name gets pulled? Or maybe CAP will take pity on one particular daily WINNER and send her a signed book (she can keep the Cheetos - consider them a gift from me, I mean, the daily winner, to her. xo) What a great day!

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who suffers from middle of the night cat wake up syndrom.. When Jason is out of town, his little terror, Calvin thinks that 3am is the best time to wake me up. This continues until about 5:30, when he gets tired and goes to lay down for a nap. My alarm goes off at 6. *whimper*

Tiny Itsy Bitsy question: when is the "Drawing"(?) for the super big meet-you-in-california contest? I could have very well overlooked it somwhere. ...
Posted by: Nikki at December 11, 2007 02:01 PM
Awww...kitty cuteness. I am still entering everyday with the hopes of winning the signed Cheetos.

Toes! I love kitty toes, but my Harley doesn't like hers touched. Since it's gotten cooler (it hasn't gotten above freezing for over a week), Harley's begun sleeping on my head, and occasionally reaching out to touch my cheek. Absolutely adorable but it DOES wake me up!
Posted by: janna at December 11, 2007 03:45 PM
Yay! Frankie pic! And Bob Toes! Gah! How am I supposed to get back to work???
I love how they are both looking down, refusing to make eye contact... but somehow, neither looks chagrined at all. hmmm, what could they possibly be plotting? The 3am romp around the house is my bet.
Posted by: Marlene at December 11, 2007 04:14 PM
Since you're off-duty by then, someone has to keep an eye on things - that's the only reason I can surmise for the 3 am rounds mine make every night. That doesn't explain the number of items that are tipped over or on the floor, every morning though...unless they really have been thwarting some very clumsy and cowardly burglars.
I wanted to thank you for answering all of the writing questions - including my semi-silly one (which as a cat-owner I really was interested in) - but each time I've gone to comment, my timing must be off, because I can't comment, even after they were turned back on, and I saw other people had posted there...just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your words.

Gorgeous kitties, Laurie! Just what I needed to see today!
I was at the fabric store to buy fleece to make my dogs some jackets (that fact that I make them doesn't mean they will actually wear them)...and honest to God, Simplicity has a pattern for cat clothes - jackets, hats, collars. Hmmm. Is this sort of like the sweaters?
My dogs in clothes - maybe. The cats - never!
Posted by: Gretchen at December 11, 2007 05:43 PM
Only way I've found to avoid the 3am kitty partying is to deliberately chase them around in the evening. Much as I'd like to just plant myself on the couch and stay there til bedtime, if I give the cat(s) a vigorous playtime when I first get home, and then later before bed, we all get to sleep peacefully through the night.
Hmmmm...if I enter and win - will you get on a boat and come over here? (kidding!)
Posted by: Kath at December 11, 2007 06:57 PM
Yay! I missed seeing your kitties! Where's Soba? Was she the only one NOT being naughty? I still miss mine so much even though she's been gone two months. I love living vicariously through your photos.
Don't get me wrong, I love my dog, but 80 pounds is a little much to snuggle in my lap. It would take way to much yarn to make her a doggy pi too. :)
As much as I hated the barfing, late night yowling and cat fluffies on my pillows, it was still totally worth it. My Christmas hint - decorate a big houseplant (mine was an umbrella tree) with padded or otherwise unbreakable ornaments and twinkle lights. No risk of climbing or breakage, yet still festive!
Posted by: Rebecca at December 11, 2007 07:46 PM
Look at those faces! You just can't help but love 'em....and fish aren't near as good company.
Posted by: Anita at December 11, 2007 07:50 PM
My cats always waited till 3 am to attack my toes that were under the covers....one time my cat Falvio (don't laugh my mother named him) woek me up in the middle of the night by batting at my chest with his paws...when I turned on the light I realised he was attacking a cockroach that was on me....love that cat
Posted by: scrapper at December 11, 2007 07:54 PM
Very cute, both of them ... and they look so innocent! Mine, too ... and I can't imagine cuddling with a fish in the middle of the night! It's chilly here in New England, and my two kitties are a big help with comfort in the cold.
Posted by: Lisa at December 11, 2007 08:19 PM
I sometimes wonder what pets think, when all of a sudden, there is a TREE inside the house? I wonder if your cats know it is a Christmas tree, or do they think it is a giant scratching post?
Posted by: Neil at December 11, 2007 09:03 PM
I'm in the same boat as Laura--I'm a WINNER. In fact the very first WINNER. But I never would have known unless I checked the list. I want my prize! But I can wait patiently, if required.
Also, my cat used to wake me in the night. Now she waits until 5 or 6 am. I consider this a triumph.

Try 3 dogs, 4 cats, 2 crabs, a turtle and assorted fish.
Two of the cats are litter mates and they (the Boys) decided to try their darndest to defur each other last night.
I spent a good portion of the morning picking up clumps of fur and trying to figure out how neither of them have any bald spots.

How is it that cats always know to magically adopt the "sweet and innocent" pose as soon as the camera comes out? Love those Bob toes!

I am so happy for your success, and love hearing about her book/travel adventures, but I've been leaving your blog feeling vaguely unfulfilled lately. That is until today. It's the cat photos! Please tell us about your book, your tour, writing, everything in your life, but I need gratutious cat photos, no matter the subject topic of the day. I am currently cat-free, and love seeing those cherubic faces! They are too innocent!
Posted by: Lynette at December 12, 2007 10:18 AM
Hey, maybe you could give them some of the gold pills to make their poop sparkly!! It would make cleaning out the cat box a bit more interesting! LOL
Posted by: Lynn at December 12, 2007 04:45 PM
My cats are officially old. They are not attacking any ornaments - even the official cat ornaments that are purposely hung low on the tree!!! Maybe they are too busy fending off the dog...
Congrats on book success and self-confidence building...
My hubby has trained his cat (we have a my cat and a his cat) - do not bother me when eat/sleep. As soon as he gets out of the bedroom in the morning...plop...up comes Mr. Kitty...as soon as hubby comes up the stairs from workout....plop...off goes Mr. Kitty. I think he just likes out-witting him!
Posted by: Shannon at December 12, 2007 08:07 PM
My two kitties have gotten even lazier since it's gotten darker earlier. They used to meet me a the garage door, but now they can't be bothered to walk all the way down there and instead sit at the top of the steps. They are both blinking and yawning like they were just woken from the deepest slumber. The will come upstairs with me when I get ready for bed. They hang out in the bedroom with me until I turn off the light. Then they have a two minute "conversation" (lots of brrrpppttts and mmrrows) with each other and then run off to parts unknown in the house. Such great personalities - you'be got to love them!
Posted by: Anonymous at December 13, 2007 09:12 AM
If you were a fish person you'd have to clean the tank by emptying the water out using a giant "straw" to get it going and you'll inevitably swallow a lot more highly saturated fish-poop water than one probably should. And you can't cuddle a fish.
