August 31! No way, Jose!
When I was at Faith's house last weekend I made sure to visit her garden in the backyard. She's growing a pumpkin! It's quite large and orange. So I called her yesterday, very excited:
Me: Hey guess what! I figured out how we can calculate the mathematical circumference of your awesome pumpkin!
Faith: Oh, that's so cool. How?
Me: We'll have to use Pumpkin Pi!
(I could not contain myself. I laugh at my own jokes.)
Faith: Is this because you're orange?
Me: According to Laurie Ann, I'm the California DMV's first blonde Oompa Loompa!
Faith: Indeed!

Happy Labor Day weekend. Do not labor. Also, please avoid driving on the 101 today so some people in red Jeeps will have less traffic. Thanks, man!
See you Tuesday!

I just laughed embarassingly loudly at the pi joke. Thankfully, it appears very few other people in my office are laboring today...
Have a great weekend!

Soba's being haunted by bright question marks! She's probably thinking up ideas on how to take over the world on Labor Day when everyone is out eating hot dogs and playing Frisbee with their dogs.
Posted by: ErinLindsey at August 31, 2007 10:36 AM
Yup, laughed out loud here, too. Thanks, I needed a giggle.
Posted by: Jennifer at August 31, 2007 10:37 AM
Pumpkin pi - ha! :)
Happy Labor Day and all! And best of luck with the 101!
Posted by: jules at August 31, 2007 10:39 AM
Yay for De-labour Day and pumpkin pie! You have me craving it now.
Posted by: Rayleen at August 31, 2007 10:49 AM
Ha Ha Ha!! Funny! Good one, Laurie, heh.
Wooooo, what's up with that pic of Soba? She's such a little doll. She looks like one of the strays that I feed. The one I call Torie cuz she's a tortoiseshell. Get it? Man, I'm so clever sometimes. :p
Have a great weekend, Laurie!
Posted by: Leeny at August 31, 2007 10:50 AM
Lordy, I am surrounded by punsters. I must be getting accustomed, because I thought it was funny, too! Love the Soba pic. Is the aura 'cause she's so hot? Have a great Labor Day!
Posted by: Anna-Liza at August 31, 2007 10:51 AM
Arrrrrgh. I shan't be pump-ing you for any new jokes.
Posted by: Nette at August 31, 2007 10:58 AM
:) Orange oompa-loompa. L.A. always gets straight to the point like that.
HEY - I labored already - Had to drive to SACRAMENTO to pick up the WeeMonkeyGurrl, and down to Sandy Eggo yesterday. I'm beat. And WHY did no one mention that the I-5 is a TWO-LANE HIGHWAY riddled with tractor-trailers?! Oy.
At least I have my Monkey back. Yay me!!
Posted by: Monkeygurrl at August 31, 2007 11:01 AM
Thanks for the snort. I fear I have become totally jaded and it takes that quirky feather to tickle my funny bone.
Posted by: Barb at August 31, 2007 11:01 AM
I'm sorry, "Blonde Oommpa-Loompa"? I laughed out loud at that! Not that the pi joke didn't amuse!
Have a great weekend, not laboring and enjoying the new oh-so-cool aspects of your freshly decorated home!! You deserve the rest!!
Posted by: mctwin at August 31, 2007 11:06 AM
That's a yoke son.
Shirley you jest.
Posted by: psychomom at August 31, 2007 11:06 AM
I am totally using the pumpkin pi. I've already used the "whaaaaambulance" that was here on your site somewhere. (That works great with sound effects -- heh.)
Have a safe and happy weekend.
Posted by: Jo at August 31, 2007 11:06 AM
Those tards on HGTV also hate ceiling fans, but hello, it is hot in my superoldass house which also wouldn't support central AC, so ceiling fans are a matter of life and death.
Your windows look hot.
Posted by: finnyknits at August 31, 2007 11:07 AM
Pumkin pi, LOVE it! And, the gorgeous floors and new table and kitties helping out... Here's ya an orange joke!
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Banana
Banana who?
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Banana...(repeat this several times)
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Orange
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn't say Banana??
Have a great weekend!!!

Have a wondertabulous weekend! Are you going to see Evan now that he's home??

I adore you, Clara!!! And you too, Laurie!!
Posted by: Liz R at August 31, 2007 11:17 AM
Sorry, I was on the 101 this morning. It wasn't so bad, or at least no worse than normal. I have a feeling you were on there much earlier than I was as I was late for work due to "Fish Watch 2007".
Posted by: Laurie Ann at August 31, 2007 11:34 AM
Good joke Laurie!! I'll have to try that one on my daughter. Happy Labor Day to you guys!!
Posted by: Jacki at August 31, 2007 11:38 AM
I promise not to be on the 101....'cuz I'm in the Midwest! Happy Labor Day!
Posted by: Amy in StL at August 31, 2007 12:02 PM
There's also Eskimo pi (used to figure the circumference of an igloo) and cow pi (to figure the circumference of... never mind, no one would want to).
Also, pi r round, cornbread r square.
Posted by: Lucia at August 31, 2007 12:38 PM
Me neither, here in the Philly burbs we have 202 though. I'll stay off that too.

Pumpkin pi, huh? Good one. Happy Labour Day weekend!

*snort* again...
Posted by: Lyda at August 31, 2007 09:47 PM
Pumpkin Pi...cornbread are square. Well, I hope you're all studying up on the Pirate Alphabet (that would be "aaaarrrgh" and "Ayeeeeee") in preparation for TLAP day, Sept 19. I won't be on the 101 either, Laurie - we'll be in Colorado that day! I gotta try to locate yarn shops in the Boulder/Denver/Longmont area, as it looks like I may have a yarncrawl opportunity!
Posted by: Dale-Harriet OF WI now in Neb at August 31, 2007 10:22 PM
I just started to worry about Soba...she's not standing in water is she? Is she zapping the other kitties with electricity when she walks up to them?
Dont let her get too close to any flammables, she could set off a spark and there go the nice wood floors!
Posted by: ErinLindsey at August 31, 2007 11:07 PM
LOL and still chuckling. I love jokes like those. Family: feel the love. I've a sister like your brother. She makes me laugh, keeps me honest and I love her tremendously (just like you love Guy, too).
Soba's "Really? Must you?" face is fantastic. Purr-fect for Labor Day.
One of the Mpls. suburbs has a CTY RD 101. It's under construction and I will not be on it. All to help you and the red jeep have a stress-free weekend. Enjoy!

Hey! You never posted any of the food you will be eating while in Texas!! Just wanted to let you know that the State Fair opens Sept 28th and runs through Oct 21st in case you are in the Dallas area around that time. They are suppose to have a whole new 'mess o' fried foods' this year!
Posted by: Tracye at September 1, 2007 08:33 AM
Oh dangit, I was gonna do the "Don't call me Shirley" joke. :) A day late and a dollar short as usual!
Posted by: Anonymous at September 1, 2007 10:40 AM
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for an excellent math-geek joke. I know just who to spring it on.
Soba-Seph remembers when cats were gods. She is merely showing off her powers.
Dontcha love it when somebody on some dumbass decorator show decrees that a functional item that SAVES ENERGY in our oil-addicted culture is "passe" or "ugly?" Perhaps the DESIGN of a particular ceiling fan can go out of style (I recall a hideous disco ceiling fan in a friend's house; it had chrome motor housing and blade mounts with clear acrylic blades). But the fan itself is a necessity. Ours save us money winter and summer.
What I wish would come back "in style" are attic fans, also known as whole-house fans ... the kind that are mounted into the ceiling in the center of the house and you open the windows. They work very well until the summer gets to the point where it does not cool off at night (in Louisiana, that's June, but it's much later in other places). We are so lucky to have one in our 1940's house. We maintain it well, and probably use it about 4 months of the year. The utility savings are very noticeable.
We also had one (and ceiling fans, too) in our house in New Orleans when I was a child, when air conditioning was considered expensive and extravagant. Now they are very hard to find, and you have to argue with contractors if you want one.

Stayed off the 101 AND the 35W re-routes too. Ain't you proud of me???
OK the 101 wasn't in the cards, being in Minneapolis as I am..... but the 35W re-routes- now that's an accomplishment!
Posted by: Not Fainthearted at September 1, 2007 04:31 PM
Nor will I be anywhere near the 101 this weekend. Too much trouble seeing as the Bay Bridge is closed. Actually I won't be going near any freeways at all as a result of that. I can only imagine how hideous the traffic is.
Posted by: Dagny at September 1, 2007 09:12 PM
I see Lucia is channelling some Elizabeth Zimmermann with her Pi are round...Happy Labor Day!

Love your "diary". Stumbled across it from another site, went in to have a look see and had to add you to my blog as a favorite. Hope that is ok.
Posted by: Judy at September 3, 2007 11:44 AM
LOL - love the windows - really want some of that stuff - hope I can find it in Australia!!! - as for style - I have none - currently wearing the 'cold this morning ain't it?' clothes (jeans, boots, skivvy and jumper) When the weather warms up it's '3/4 pants, t shirt (possibly shirt that requires ironing if I'm really dressing up) and sandals - that's it! Welcome to the life of a 40 something mother of 2 small children!! No style - no class!
Posted by: Tinkingbell at September 3, 2007 05:21 PM
OMG so if you're coming to Texas in October AND you mentioned the color orange in the same post, this doesn't possibly mean that you're planning to attend that most horrific tradition of college football in Dallas in early October does it? I mean...we have to talk. I live north of the Red River. ;-)

Posted by: riseyp at September 4, 2007 10:33 AM
I was on the 101 up north over this hot weekend and it was like driving through pudding. Regarding ceiling fans and the gorgeous window-gels; they save the temp inside our house. Fans are akin to windows - of course one needs them. The Soba eyes are, once again, full of power vibes.

The first *blonde* oompa-loompa? Does that mean that there are other oompa-loompas registered with the DMV, just none of them with the balls to go blonde?

It is Sept. 4th.
Where is the promised contest link? Did Bob take off with it?

CAP is probably still stuck in traffic. I just started checking the site. It's almost 9:00 pm (Central) here (7:00 pm CAP-time). I'm sure she will be along soon. Until then, we can always sing a round of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat".
Or maybe "Kumbaya".
Maybe not... ;)
Cheers !

Joe, I couldn't tell you why you are doing that. I get that reaction all the time. ;)
PS: "5 o'Clock Somewhere"... Some days, it's my mantra.

I was actually going to ask about the "winning free stuff" part but, being that it's Sept. 5th, and this is the 1st time ever I make a comment about your blog. I believe I will go with... I really enjoy reading your blog. I used to live in L.A. Calif, but move to Colorado. Every time I read your blog I can't help to laugh, because of all the memories it brings to me... freeways, traffic, goofy stuff. I only been away almost 2yrs now, but boy do you make me miss the chaos! "Thank you! Hope your doing okay!" :)
