Hello profound cats!

Some people have expressed concern that my cats will all start speaking LOLcats language. (If you are old like me and need explanation for this yet again internet-related phenomenon that is already over since everyone knows that as soon as technoancients like myself learn of a thing, it is officially Very Uncool, here is a definition.) However, as we all know, my animals speak in full sentences, write manifestos, use the internet when I am not home, host parties in their underwear while mixing martinis and smoking cigars (Roy, I'm looking at you) and they all poop as if preparing for a poop apocolypse.

Frankie spends all day looking at I Can Has Cheezburger. Kids these days.

In other news, I am thisclose to being done with a last round of deadlines on things and general tomfoolery and I can see a window of time stretching out somewhere in the future where I am less busy and chicken with head cut off and so on, and I am thinking that rather than spend the whole time twiddling thumbs and plotting the demise of my evil arch-enemy, I might actually attempt to catch up on correspondence and real life things. I wonder if this is even a quasi-achievable goal? We'll see. But if you get an email reply from me sometime this summer from a note you sent in the fall of 1982, don't fret. I haven't lost my mind. I am merely trying in vain to catch up on my life. If it doesn't work out we'll just make jokes about it later. If there is a later...

Soba,
Dig the hat.

Posted by: k8 at July 2, 2007 09:08 AM

Oh, I think Soba will kill you for that last one, but thanks for sharing it nonetheless! I am amazed she stood still and showed no claw, actually. She's not even blurry. My boys would have given me a blurry butt-shot if I'd tried that.

Posted by: ccr in MA at July 2, 2007 09:15 AM

Laurie, you were captioning cats before LOLcats got its start. And yours are definitely still LOL, even if they have impeccable grammar and spelling (except for Frankie).

Posted by: Dana at July 2, 2007 09:15 AM

I almost choked on my lunch when looking at Bob's picture. And Soba in the hat is just too much. I really need to learn how to do stuff like that (captioning, I'm good at taking pictures of my cats).

Posted by: heidi at July 2, 2007 09:16 AM

Too cute! For a while I would say something to one of my stich N bitch group and then say "and also, cats". I always love it when you have pictures of them.

Posted by: Angie at July 2, 2007 09:27 AM

Soba looks good in red.

Posted by: Mary in Boston at July 2, 2007 09:28 AM

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Catlets.

poop apocolypse = poopocolypse. I think we've coined a new term.

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at July 2, 2007 09:32 AM

oh good- I did send you an email last year. That should move my response time up to 2009!
I would be very afraid to close my eyes tonight. Soba is definitely plotting your demise.

Posted by: suetreiber at July 2, 2007 09:36 AM

I don't know, Soba's expression seems winsome. Of course, the cuter they look, the more they are plotting how to inflict open wounds.

Posted by: Samantha at July 2, 2007 09:38 AM

Our cats have such talent and dedication for lolling that we've dubbed our house "Lollywood." But maybe that title belongs to your California-centric cats, who are obviously too intelligent and well-educated and dedicated to world domination to speak in LOLcat.

Posted by: Jill of the 7 cats at July 2, 2007 09:39 AM

My cat actually nibbles my foot when he's hungry. It is a small but subtle reminder that if the tuna doesn't show up, *I* will be dinner. And it won't be pretty.

Posted by: orangeblossoms at July 2, 2007 09:43 AM

NOT Roy! Nope, Roy is innocent of all charges. I mean, just look at that sweet face y'all. It's really the She-Devil in red Prada Knitware.

Posted by: Carol's Art Magic at July 2, 2007 09:50 AM

Soba looks to be enjoying the photo shoot ... or maybe she is just smiling thinking of how nicely the red sweater will go with your blood. Bad Soba!

Posted by: Fianna at July 2, 2007 09:56 AM

Ahhh.. kitty photos.

That's all that I can think to say- since, I've now not been teaching or working for 2 weeks- my faren't ready to be witty or coherent yet.

My brain is still trying to recover from answering a thousand and one .. no, make that 5 thousand and one questions per day, from sweet (most of the time) third graders and trying to remember all that I have to remember daily and all that goes along w/ teaching.. I love it, but you just need some 'brain recovery time' for a few days.

AND, I am sad to report some bad news.. I have 'somewhere' misplaced or lost my KNITTING MOJO. sigh..

Posted by: Jeannie in Korea (for now) at July 2, 2007 09:58 AM

I must add, that your captions are always way funnier than those LOL pages.. I don't quite that that phenomenon.

Posted by: Beth at July 2, 2007 10:00 AM

SEE.. actual proof! That should say:

That's all I can think to say- since, I've not been teaching or working for 2 weeks- and I'm not ready or able to be witty or coherent yet.

I'm not sure what the word: faren't means.. ?? I think it's one of those 'talking in your sleep' kind of words? Or a word from pure exhaustion?

Posted by: Jeannie in Korea (for now) at July 2, 2007 10:01 AM

I'd sleep with one eye open if I were you.

Posted by: Dagny at July 2, 2007 10:08 AM

Your kitty comments are much more enjoyable than LOLcats. Perhaps it is the English teacher in me, but I prefer that felines speak in complete sentences and with impeccable grammar. :) Your cats have style (and Frankie can be forgiven for occasional lapses).

But apparently other people disagree with me. I Can Has Cheezeburger is the top wordpress.com blog every day I've ever logged into my dashboard. I just don't get it. ::shrugs::

Posted by: Laurita at July 2, 2007 10:14 AM

So cute! Thanks for the shot of cat cuteness to start our weeks!

XO

Posted by: marissa at July 2, 2007 10:16 AM

I think I'm officially an adult, because I just realised that I can not stand those lolcat-thingies, because of the spelling and poor grammar. Your rulers of the universe are way more cool. And funny. And Soba pleasedon'tkillLaurie. That's all.

Posted by: Kaia at July 2, 2007 10:27 AM

Well, I just spent 45 minutes looking at those Cheezburger things, they're VERY funny....but like your kitties, Evangeline and Lilliane speak in whole sentences. Lilly slips up sometimes, she's young, but Evangeline is a lady and will say so! Soba...Evvie says to tell you that she thinks we look better than we actually taste. Just sayin'. (OH! and while I was away last week she *I'm sure it was Evvie* left the husband a dead mouse!)

Posted by: Dale-Harriet in WI at July 2, 2007 10:38 AM

I'm confused. My cat just says "meow." Please help.

Posted by: rb at July 2, 2007 10:45 AM

lolcat? I just don't get it. Guess that means I'm not hip. Oh well.

I LOVE the kitties here. I can understand what they're plotting...(I second the plea: pleasedon'tkillLaurie.)

Posted by: Not Fainthearted at July 2, 2007 10:45 AM

I love seeing your adorable moochers I mean cats!!
Please don't worry about e-mailing me at all; I tend to write to hear myself talk and I can be very very very verbose. Skip over answering me, okay?? I just love coming here to see what you're up to!!

Posted by: Liz R at July 2, 2007 10:48 AM

Me and Bob have the same opinion of that lolcat babble.

Good luck with that catching up thing. I took the week off so I could do things around the house and so far all I've done is goof off.

Where's that chore list?

Posted by: psychomom at July 2, 2007 10:52 AM

I very nearly linked your June 22 articulate expression of feline desire for a cheeseburger in a lolcatz thread on a messageboard. I was so tickled by it. I've been seeing the cats with messages for some time as they seem to have a doppler popularity effect. I like your cats and their messages much, much better.

Posted by: Niente Zero at July 2, 2007 10:55 AM

I don't believe red is Soba's color.

Just sayin'.

(love me some lolcats. makes the children think. like making childers think.)

Posted by: Suzie at July 2, 2007 11:17 AM

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who automatically read "poop apocalypse" as "poopcalypse."

I feel so much better now.

Posted by: KJ at July 2, 2007 11:29 AM

There was a funny bit on Zefrank about getting a cat just so you could change the litter box. I have no clue how you would find that exact episode on his archive, though. My boy cat Cesare has a scooping fetish. He has to get into the litterbox and do something WHILE I'm scooping it.

Posted by: Tan at July 2, 2007 11:29 AM

Laurie? I'm not sure that putting that hat on Soba, taking a picture and PUBLISHING it was exactly the right thing to do. I mean, you DO have to sleep sometime.

Posted by: Nancy at July 2, 2007 11:34 AM

That last picture is adorable. Soba looks almost blissful. Guard your yarn. I think she's plotting against it.

Posted by: Twilight at July 2, 2007 11:36 AM

I [heart] LOLcats no matter how "uncool" they may be. I even have a LOLcats tag on my blog. I've always enjoyed your captioned cat photos; they're much classier. Basically, I like any sort of cat pictures, is what I guess I'm saying here. Oh boy. I'm terminally uncool.

Posted by: Laiane at July 2, 2007 11:37 AM

It's my understanding that the lolspeak on ICanHasCheezburger is the direct result of the captions being typed by creatures who lack opposable thumbs (generally cats, but sometimes bunnies) - who, in fact, have paddypaws rather than fingers. Or who occasionally give up and type with their noses - hence the idiosyncratic spelling and grammar*. It's not to be wondered at, but I DO find it easier to read what your kitties are up to - even Soba!

*I expect captions would look odd if I typed with my nose, too. But I love the pictures.

Posted by: La BellaDonna at July 2, 2007 11:38 AM

I love LOLcats. They never cease to amuse me. However, your succinct but well-spoken kitties are also very very funny!

If you look here: http://bp3.blogger.com/_5G41euKckoQ/RolAMmQinjI/AAAAAAAAAnA/mNEktiWyjMg/s1600-h/Pusefyll.jpg you can meet my cat. She likes her vine. I don't know if she wants to share thoug...

Posted by: Cruzidull at July 2, 2007 12:11 PM

Sometimes the lolcat-speak is so annoying that is destroys the humor ... and sometimes it's just fine. I usually enjoy the lolcats, but my personal opinion is that cats are too smart to really talk that way. I'm quite sure they use better grammar than we do!

Posted by: Anna-Liza at July 2, 2007 12:12 PM

I was in such a bad mood when I got home today. Then I read your blog, and Soba in her red hat just made me giggle out loud. And now I feel much better. So tell her thanks from me!

Posted by: Linda Huson at July 2, 2007 12:15 PM

I love LOLcats (probably more than a "real" cool person would), but Laurie, I have always thought that your captions are more clever, cute, and funny! LOLcats can only fit a certain amount of humor into their limited grammar and pseudo-spelling skillz.

That being said, I will close this comment by saying, "IM IN UR APOCALYPSE, POOPIN' MAH BRAINZ OUT!!1!1"

Posted by: Amber Joy at July 2, 2007 12:23 PM

HAI! LUV TEH KITTEHS! KTHXBYE!

Posted by: Rayleen at July 2, 2007 12:26 PM

I like YOUR cats and the captions best of all!

But this weekend I did look at every single picture on I CAN HAZ CHEESEBURGR?. 80+ pages. Yeah, I know, I'm obsessive/compulsive or something. Some were funny, some were dumb, but thankfully I got it out of my system.

My cat Tommy the Sith Apprentice not only speaks in complete sentences, but his voice is distinctively his and totally different than his brother, the departed and much-missed Jason, who was a Jedi. My place is definitely tilting toward the Dark Side now...

If, I mean, when I meet you in person, Laurie, I will do the voices for you if you want (oh, I know, you can hardly contain your excitement now!)

Not only do I feel old not knowing what LOLcats where, I feel even older because I still remember when everyone loved DOGS!

Posted by: Neil at July 2, 2007 01:20 PM

I like the LOLcats on Icanhascheezburger.com, too. Sometimes they crack me up so hard, cat pictures in general are too funny. Well, cat pictures are funny to me. There are people out there as we speak rolling their eyes and all, "Stupid pictures of her dumb cats again, I don't get it, who cares?" hee.

You either feel the Soba or you don't. I will feel the Soba claw tonight, I suspect.

One question Roy -- boxers or tighty-whities?

Posted by: Marilyn at July 2, 2007 01:44 PM

roy - red bikini briefs, very suave.....

Posted by: laurie at July 2, 2007 02:40 PM

I did not know this about the LOLcats. Thanks for the link. My cats don't stay awake long enough to form ANY sort of language although there is a chance I'll get something out of Claire Bear if she finds out about the picture I posted today. http://myfavoritesheep.blogspot.com/

Posted by: Punkin's Mom at July 2, 2007 02:40 PM

My dogs speak in full sentances. I, however... um, what was I talking about? Full sent-whaties?

Posted by: The Other Dagny at July 2, 2007 02:56 PM

I agree with Samantha that the red knitwear on Soba gives her a winsome and -dare I say?- kittenish look. She really is a pretty cat, as are all your cats, in spite of her plotting. Remind her that you're the one who scoops the litter box and opens the food and you should be safe.

I am horrible about responding to e-mail. Not because I get a lot, but because I never think my responses are clever enough, so I just don't respond at all, which is bad.

I think you should just respond to all e-mails with random cat pictures.

woo-hoo! Pics of all 4 cats is a great way to start the week. Although - there does seem to be something menacing in Soba's eyes on her fashion suit.
However - red is a lovely color on her - brings out her beautiful green eyes!

Posted by: Julianne at July 3, 2007 05:31 AM

Also - am jealous of your cat's outstanding grasp of the English language. My cat sounds more like someone less-bright than Homer Simpson. His conversations are mostly:
"How You Doin'" and
"I'm a sexy beast" and
"um, still hungry..."

Posted by: Julianne at July 3, 2007 05:34 AM

Soba: My manifesto: let me show you it.

As someone with a real live English BA from a decent school, who is working towards my Masters in Library Science, let me just say that I freakin' LOVE lolcats. There is nothing wrong with being able to laugh at strange language permutations, and the fact that cats are silly.

Posted by: Emily at July 3, 2007 05:54 AM

I always imagined cats spoke with snotty English accents -- except for my Mom's cat, Mr. Whiskers -- he's too dumb for that (sorry Mom). :)

Posted by: Juliana at July 3, 2007 07:57 AM

I know that last expression all too well *shudder*

Posted by: Sam at July 3, 2007 08:23 AM

Yes, cheezeLOLcrzycats.com whateverness should be contacting Bob and crew via their agent Laurie, they shouldn't stoop to the level of sending their mugs to them.

Gads, that LOLcat stuff drives me nuts. I'm with Roy & Soba on this one - keep channeling Henry Miller, bacon, and world domination!

Posted by: Samantha at July 3, 2007 09:31 AM

Don't tell Soba, but s/he(?) is absolutely adorable in the knitted hood (hey "the Knitting Hood"...I like that...sounds like a good name for a knitting blog...so obviously, there probably is a blog out there somewhere in cyberspace already named same).

Posted by: Beverly at July 3, 2007 09:34 AM

The only thing I can say about these LOLCats. Like kids, these cats are a reflection of their owners. Good parents brings up well-mannered kids, likewise cats. Bad parents... well, look at these LOLCats.
