Off Learnin' Stuff

I'm in a training seminar all week with limited internet access. My head will be getting heavy with knowledge. And the rest of me will be heavy with the free bagels. Later taters!

I just got turned on to this website and NOW she has to go to seminars.

Oh, well. I'll just use this time to get caught up on old blogposts.

Finally..............another cat person who would trade a guy for a cat any day.

Enjoy the bagels. Remember, bagels at training seminars are free from calories 'cause how else are you gonna survive the seminar? :)

Posted by: Tracie at July 16, 2007 07:34 AM

Have a great week, sweetie!!

Posted by: Liz R at July 16, 2007 07:41 AM

Have fun. Learn lots. Maybe there will be knitting time.

Posted by: Pamela at July 16, 2007 07:41 AM

Have a bagel for me too (lots of strawberry cream cheese, please ma'am).

We'll miss you.

Now...

Let the learnin' begin !

Just found your website yesterday, and am glad there are kindred spirits out there.

So sorry for your loss!

My mom passed away in '96, and I didn't cry nearly so much then as when my 15-yr.-old buddy Basil passed away in '99! (I have since been making up for lost time on my mom's behalf--I cry most every time I really think about her.) Let yourself go through whatever you must to heal. I couldn't get another cat for years, but I now have 4 new buddies in my life and they are the best! Hugs to you!!

Posted by: Michele at July 16, 2007 07:57 AM

Training seminars? I call them naps!

Enjoy the rest and hope there isn't a test at the end.

Posted by: psychomom at July 16, 2007 08:01 AM

I had one of those a few weeks ago. When it was done my head was overstuffed with Important Work Facts, and trivia I didn't need, like where I put my car keys, was falling out all over the place. It wasn't pretty. Plus our new babysitter chose the moment of maximum overstuffity to up and quit. But I passed the certification exam! I wish you similar success.

Also, (((Laurie))). May your new moon always be aspected by an elegant Uranus. (giggle giggle... you make me feel young again... giggle... I'm not sure this is a good thing...)

Posted by: Lucia at July 16, 2007 08:02 AM

Hope you get some knitting time in...take care.

Posted by: Pink at July 16, 2007 08:21 AM

I went to a conference this spring where they had free breakfast and an afternoon snack that included cookies, popcorn and PowerBars! We all know free food doesn't have calories, so load up m'dear.

Posted by: Amy in StL at July 16, 2007 08:47 AM

Bagels! Okay, now I'm craving blueberry bagels, lightly toasted, with a nice slathering of cream cheese. Sheesh! Guess this means a trip to the store.

Posted by: Carol's Art Magic at July 16, 2007 08:50 AM

oh uggh.. nothing I hate more than training seminars. Especially after lunch when you feel like you can barely keep your eyes open. Good luck!!

After a while, crocodile! I would say have fun, but a seminar- bleh.

Posted by: Sue F. at July 16, 2007 08:56 AM

Learnin is good! Bagels are good! Week without Laurie is BAD!

Miss you, and can't wait for you to return!

Posted by: Sara at July 16, 2007 09:48 AM

I've been to lots of professional seminars, a term usually defined as "eight hours of daytime snoozing to catch up on the sleep you lost last night in the bar trying to decide which commandment to break next".

Have fun.

Posted by: Oberon at July 16, 2007 09:52 AM

Oh gee - I'll have to take a couple of days off myself then while you get your larnin' on.

Post when you can and remember - if you eat it whilst standing up, the calories go down through your feet into the floor (as opposed to when you're sitting down when they get stuck in the butt). So you're making the building stronger :)

Posted by: Leslie in Mass at July 16, 2007 09:55 AM

Mmmmmmmm. Bagels!

Hey, will they let you knit during the seminar? That would be cool.

Have fun.

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at July 16, 2007 10:02 AM

But we'll miss you!!! Maybe you can recruit a guest blogger or two? Seriously, I know this old Australian codger who loves to give life lessons, but speaks a language all his own. Or maybe your buddy Faith?

Posted by: Jami in WI at July 16, 2007 10:27 AM

Yay for free bagels!

Boo for limited Laurie.

Thanks for the heads up-I always get a little sad and anxious when you don't post for several days I realize that you are allowed to have a life, but I worry that you aren't ever coming back! :)
Have fun(?), learn a lot, and we look forward to more posts in the near future.

I had to leave an unrelated comment - this past weekend I found a resturant nearby that had southern style food (not very common in the northeast). I had excellent fried chicken, sweet tea, and best of all fried okra. Had never had fried okra before and it is the best, and so healthy - I mean really, it's a vegetable.

Posted by: Lisa at July 16, 2007 12:58 PM

you silly girl, everybody knows that there are no calories in free bagels! You will emerge with little mole eyes from your week of Edumacation all trim and thin and just near to wasting away!!!!!

Posted by: tina at July 16, 2007 01:10 PM

Your Roy story was the best bitter/sweet story I read about your divorce, not to mention, about Roy.MW

Posted by: Monica at July 16, 2007 01:17 PM

OMG! Thank goodness b/c then maybe I can get caught up reading your blog. :-) Yes, dork that I am...I am now completely hooked. I read you like a year ago or something for the cat comments...very funny. Then my mom told me a few days ago that you had a tragedy...so I'm back. And reading from the beginning so I feel caught up on the book that is your life. Anyway, gotta have something to do till school starts (schoolteacher, nicetomeetcha)!! My blog is currently a work in progress...but for now you can check me out here: http://www.lattesandliterature.blogspot.com/

Wow...a week without freshCAP. Hmmm, well...stands around looking here and there aimlessly. I will re-read the historical documents (past posts), check for exact l'Occitane product (was in Sephora yesterday and couldnt' remember), and download recipes (for knitting and fud). Hope the seminar was interesting and you met some cool people.

We'll miss you!

We will also look forward to the stories about how you did this embarrassing thing in a room full of strangers, or that hilarious thing that people seemed confused by, or the other stupendous thing that will make us all stand up and cheer.

Hooray for CAP Goes To Seminars!

Seminars = headaches. Take your Advil with you.

Posted by: Jacki at July 16, 2007 03:16 PM

I despise seminars, especially if there is role playing. Ugh! A few years ago my company had a mandatory seminar on customer service where the instructor would make the sound of a ringing phone then point her finger at random people. If pointed at, you were supposed to "answer" the phone in a perky fashion, and if you didn't, she made this game-show wrong-answer buzzing noise. Well, I ain't perky, and my job does not require answering the phones! At one point I decided that if she pointed that flipping finger at me again, I was going to bite it off...ahem. I probably should avoid seminars. Hope yours is much better, and I'll miss you this week. ;o)

I'm all for learnin but what about the zukes? Left on their own they really will take over! I'm a little worried for you and your neighbors.

Posted by: Jodi at July 16, 2007 04:04 PM

Laurie(and Jodi too), I have something for you to do with those zukes when you get back.

Cook 4-5 of the normal sized ones(or a mix of zukes and yellow squash) with an onion in about a 1/4th cup water til tender, near the end of cooking add about a cup of frozen corn if you wish. Mash well and add 1 spoonful(about 1/4 cup) each of cream cheese and sour cream, and a handful of grated cheddar(these can be low or non-fat and are fine-that's what I used except for the cream cheese). Tear up and add 2 slices of whole wheat bread and an egg too. I put in some garlic powder and a teeny bit of cayenne for flavor. Mix well and pour into a 8x8(or 9x9) buttered baking dish. Dot with butter and bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes or til browned on top.

YUMMMMMY!!! And oh, so comforting. I served this with boiled new potatoes, field peas, salmon patties and sliced tomatoes last night. My kids inhaled the whole meal and wanted more today!

As a former tech type, I'm a veteran of many many computer courses, not to mention the management charm school seminars I had to attend. Heed my warning.

When your head gets stuffed with knowledge, keep it moving right out of there before it gets impacted! Watch Scrubs, My Name is Earl, something mindless. Sing. Knit.

Posted by: Maureen at July 16, 2007 05:45 PM

I just found the entry about zucchini. When I was a youngun and Dad still somewhat green about gardening, he thought we needed a whole row for each of us. Didn't want to run low, he said.

Next year he planted just one row.

Year after that he planted one plant per each of us.

About two years after that it was my job to pick them, and somehow managed to miss one in particular until OCTOBER. It was 36" long. No fooling.

Weirdest Jack-o-lantern you ever saw.

Posted by: Leif at July 16, 2007 06:05 PM

Funny, I was so bummed by today's post, so I came into the comments section, not because I wanted to leave a comment, but to seek the company of everyone else who is going to miss you as much as me! The mild situational depression and reading all those comments is making me crave a hot buttered bagel.

Posted by: Elizabeth at July 16, 2007 07:45 PM

Oh Purlie - We will miss you, this week!
I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Maybe it will be good for you to put your head to something like this for a while. I cried over your "Story of Roy," as if he had been my own. Hugs forever to you! I am so glad that he found his way to you and not to the wrong person. Now, THAT would have been a great tragedy! Take care. We all love you!

Posted by: Janet at July 16, 2007 09:59 PM

When you're grabbing your bagel, remember that coffee cups at those things are always teeny-weeny. Get at least 2 cups before sitting down to the first session!

Posted by: Sarah at July 16, 2007 11:02 PM

There´s one fine thing in seminar weeks: Ya´ll love to return to your office. Enjoy the bagels!

Posted by: Anonymous at July 16, 2007 11:32 PM

I just caught up with your posts and found out about Roy and I wanted to leave my condolences. I to lost my beloved cat Dommy on June 26th who was 13 years old. I never thought I could love a cat like that but I did and I totally understand and empathize with you. Roy was a cutie and I know you will see him again just as I will see my boy. God Bless and I just know Roy and Dommy (and all the other cool cats) are causing a load of trouble upstairs!

Posted by: Jeanann at July 16, 2007 11:33 PM

I highly recommend onion bagels - that is, if you're not feeling much like socializing at the seminar. That's my patented defensive seminar attendee technique - it's a tip I don't just share with anyone, either. It's powerful - use the power wisely.

Laurie-

I hope you read this. Whatever became of your neighbor's poo pile? I'm sure more than a few of us want updates.

Posted by: catherine at July 17, 2007 12:30 PM

I was the one to turn shari on to your blog. I've been stalking your blog for about a month and a half. I also finally wanted to say I'm sorry about Roy. I cried when I read your post. I hope you are better and that this seminar is keeping you busy...but I am sad that it's keeping you from posting new stuff.

Oh and I'm obsessed with learning to knit but have to wait until I finish a t-shirt quilt before I'm able to pick up new needles and some yarn(agreement with my boyfriend who for some reason thinks I have to finish one project before starting a new one). Mine were lost in a maze of moves from California to Florida.

Can't wait for a new post...

Thanks.

Bagels and ice water seem to be the latest in seminar "comfort foods". Why can't they include cream cheese, at the very least?

And beware of TLA (Three Letter Acronyms) at any conference or seminar. They can cause you to go to work for USC, IBM, ATT or the FBI.... (Sorry, that was probably TMI, since it is TFE in the week for this limited attempt at humor)

I am a little behind in my reading and was so sorry to hear about Roy. I too had to say good bye to a special kitty last week. Her name is Samantha and she suffered from epilepsy. She was a beautiful siamese that we chose not knowing of her condition. She lived for two years with her illness but in the last few months, it just got uncontrollable. I hated to see her suffer so my husband decided it was time. And he was right. It was a difficult decision and I would have had a hard time making it on my own. But she is peaceful now and I will always remember her. Maybe her and Roy are getting to know each other up there in kitty heaven.

I've been away for a week and was just catching up on your posts when I read the sad news.

I have tears in my eyes and cannot even imagine how you're feeling these days.

I got my first pets, 2 cats, about 3 years ago and am slowly understanding what it means to have these wonderful animals in one's life - and beginning to realize how awful it's going to be to lose them one day.

I think I'll be one of those that needs to get another cat right away because I know how many need homes. But I know many who cannot deal with getting another one.

But however you deal with your loss, I'm so sorry.

And thanks for sharing Roy with us - it was a joy to read about him so often!
