June 22, 2007

Hello, it is Friday!

Yes I know I said I wouldn't be writing or even sitting in the same room as a computer but I tend to lie about these things. Liar liar pants on fire! Except I am not wearing pants, so there's that.

It's just that some folks emailed me about the deadline for the essays for Chicken Soup For The Divorced Soul. I double-checked with my Top Secret Chicken Soup Insider, and the deadline for entries is definitely July 30, 2007.

Here are the details again if you missed it:

The guidelines: Share your insightful, hopeful and heartfelt stories in Chicken Soup for the Divorced Soul and you’ll have the chance to win the Grand Prize of: • $350.00 cash • Publication of your story in Chicken Soup for the Divorced Soul (spring 2008) • Ten (10) signed copies of the book • The chance to become a local celebrity by having a book signing at your favorite local bookstore • Don't forget to read the Contest Rules

Also I think they should include a call for "witty stories" in there because I would like to hear some funny stories myself. I could have used that in my divorce, and frankly ya'll are funnier in the comments than I ever am, so get cooking! I mean, writing! And even if you don't win the Grand Prize but your essay is accepted, you get a small cash compensation and of course the coolness of being a published author in a well-known bestselling series.

If this sounds good to you, submit your essays to:
divorcedsoulcontest@comcast.net

(Please make sure you put CAP in the subject line so they know to read ya'll essays first. heh.) Oh! And you can submit more than one story. This works well for us wordy types.

NEXT ON THE AGENDA:

And also there is this thing called the Blog Reader Project and even though ya'll know I detest the word "blog" because I think it sounds like something you'd hork up while having a bad case of flu, they do have a neat survey that I guess is trying to figure out who reads what and why and also what brand of toothpaste you like. I don't know. I only know I am a terrible sucker for online surveys, so here it is if you are looking for Ways To Seem Busy At Your Desk:

Take the Blog Reader Project survey >

And finally, if you were wondering what I may be having for breakfast on this, The Day I Turn Old, well I am not telling you. But if you did happen to guess "cheeseburger from In-N-Out" you would not be very wrong. That is all I have to say about that.

Have a great weekend!

May your next 36 years be filled with love, happiness, good health and only good things for you and those you love. You go on now and enjoy your day (((hugs to you)))

Oooooh, In-N-Out! Portland, OR will be the perfect city to live in once we get us some In-N-Outs. Sigh. In the meantime, have a double-double for me (with a chocolate shake!) for me, would ya??

Oh, and Happy Birthday!!!!! :)

Happy Birthday Laurie! I hope you enjoyed your birthday breakfast cheeseburger. It's your day - do what makes you happy!

Happy Birthday!!
Enjoy your healthy breakfast! And your interesting wardrobe choices! See example:

"Liar liar pants on fire! Except I am not wearing pants, so there's that."

Unless, of course, you could be lying again.
:)

Enjoy some whine. I mean wine! And not even from a box - you know, the *real* fancy stuff!
Maybe even some cheese with the mold scraped off to go with it!
hee hee.
And it sounds like Frankie is preparing something special for you....

Holy crap--first, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! second, I can't believe that someone else also dreads the badness that is their birthday--not the actual birthday, but the badness that is anticipated to occur! I was so totally like that until IT HAPPENED--oh yes, the very worst birthday badness--at the beginning of a 9 hour car trip back home from our vacation-my ex told me --ahem--"I don't want to be married anymore." And that was it!! The very worst birthday EVER of my life!! But the funny thing? it's been uphill from there!! that was 3 years ago, and my last birthday, which was a month ago? I went to Scotland--the one place I have dreamed of my entire life--where "he" didn't want to go because it was too rainycoldexpensivedepressing--I spent my 37th birthday in Glasgow, where all of the people on the tour sang "happy birthday" to me, and 4 strangers who had become my friends had given me a present and a card. Huh. And then I got home, and my new man, the man I can't believe exists--asks me to marry him. Yeah, I'd say that's turning a sow's ear into a silk purse. Have a spectacular birthday and thank you again for my daily "holy crap, that so happened to me!" moment.

Oh yeah...it's b-day time...for both of us. Mine's in a month...argh. Oh well. I think having an In 'n Out Burger on your b-day is an excellent choice. I just may follow suit!

OK, here's a story, not terribly witty but birthday-related *and* with inappropriate content, because as you know I have never been divorced and therefore can't tell you anything about that, witty or otherwise.

When I was about 14 my whole family went to the circus. It was one of those fairly low-budget ones where, if you look closely, you will notice that people change nationalities every five minutes, so that the acrobats from Italy become the tightrope walkers from Romania, or was it the other way around? Also, the ringmaster was incredibly obnoxious, coming *this close* to baby talk a lot of the time although there appeared to be few babies in the audience. So at intermission he said,
"Have *I* got a *treat* for *you*!"
(calling offstage)
"Could you bring out Big Babe, please?"
(They do. She's an elephant.)
"Would any of you kids like a ride on Big Babe?"
(A line eventually forms, and some kids eventually get atop the elephant, and someone starts leading her around the ring.)
"This is a very special day for Big Babe, kids, because you know what? It's her birthday! Big Babe is 21 years old today! Can you kids sing
Happy Birthday to Big Babe?"
(Silence.)
"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday tooooo youuuu,
Happy BIRTHday Big Baaaaaa-abe..."
(Big Babe, who by now has walked around next to the ringmaster again, squats and lets loose enough elephant poop to fertilize your entire garden, and probably most of your neighbors' as well. The ringmaster looks around desperately for a hole to crawl into. My dad practically has to be helped up off the floor, he is laughing so hard. The rest of us are not too far behind him. I remember nothing whatsoever of the second half.)

So there you have it, a birthday story with poop. Happy 36th! May it be a very good year.

And I just LOVE Shannon's birthday story. I'm all about having one day a year when "it's all about me!" For the whole day I go around and tell everybody in a happy squeeqy (but not childish) voice "It's my BIRTH-day!!!!"

And then I get drunk and have a designated driver take me home and tuck me in. And once in a while hold my hair back while I blog, er, puke.

The Chicken Soup for the Divorced Soul contest. $350.00? And you license them to use your name & photo forever? No. The $350 covers about 1 counseling session, and you know I'd need 10 more after my story, name and photo are plastered all over the world.

Wish I could write a story for the contest, but my first husband died before I could get a divorce (true story), so I don't think I qualify. And I am very much hoping that my current marriage sticks, because I'm not doing this again!

Oh honey, 36 isn't old. Wait until you turn 40. Then 41. And then you're looking at 42 coming up shortly...

My 9 year old niece recently asked me how old I was. When I told her she says, kinda smugly, "my mom's in her 20's". I said (more smugly) "missy, you're mom is 7 years younger than me - you do the math." She thought about it for a second, then her eyes got very big and she shot an accusing look toward my sister. So there!

Happy Birthday and best wishes for many many more!

Enjoy that burger! We loooove In N Out and make it a point to have a Double Double, fries, and a milkshake every time we're in California. Portland has Burgerville, which is really good in its own right, but really, there's nothing quite like In N Out.

Happy Birthday!

I turn 40 in August and was all worried because my best friends (who all turned 40 this year BEFORE me, making me the baby... yaya!) all did something huge and I was feeling pressure. One got a boob job and got married for the second time, one got a tatoo she still hasn't shown her mother (at 40!), and one got cancer and shaved her head. I am going to change jobs and move and my son graduates from high school; that's quite enough. Shoo.

Well now see?? You've learned one of the Big Advantages of growing older (and believe me, you're so far from "old" that it's all I can do to not call you "baby"). When you're a grown-up, *you can have ANYTHING YOU WANT FOR BREAKFAST!* And by the way, next year, you can also have anything you want for LUNCH. But you have to be over 50 to have whatever you want to eat PERIOD.

And you can feel even younger (!) because I am more than 10 years older than you and I had the 45RPM single of that song when it came out! "It was an itsy bitsy teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikini, that she wore for the first time today..."

Hope you had a great day.

And thanks to pretty Frankie for the Moment of Zen. I will got sit on my zafu now, and contemplate both cheeseburgers and poop.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURIE!!! Frankie, staring at the carpet is one of my favorite things to do.

Posted by: jann at June 23, 2007 05:17 AM

Hippo birdie two ewes! This year, I turn *gasp* 45. But you know what? Every year, I turn older no matter what. I still feel 20-something, and mostly act it (though I don't dress it 'cause that would be wrong on soooooo many levels). So I decided I'm living my internal age. Because time goes by much too quickly to do otherwise.

And the elephant poop story? Lucia owes me a new, non-coffee covered keyboard. Stat.

Layrie, I forgot to say yesterday that, in honor of your birthday week, my blog post has both Deadliest Catch and hurricanes in it. I'd be tickled if you stopped by.

Posted by: dez at June 23, 2007 07:08 AM

Um, there's no Y in Laurie. Clearly I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Posted by: dez at June 23, 2007 07:09 AM

Not having checked your blog for the past few days (as I am on vacation), I had no idea it was your birthday yesterday. But my DREAM SELF knew, apparently, because I had a dream last night that you came to visit me out in Seattle! We were BFF and had our arms chummily around each other as we were walking down the strreets of my old neighborhood near downtown. I was taking you clothes shopping in my two favorite thriftstores and I was SO EXCITED to show you all the neat stuff. They were both gone. I'd been away from that neighborhood so long that I didn't know they'd closed. I was almost crying from sadness but you, my dream BFF, were there to comfort me. I think me taking you clothes shopping was my birthday gift to you. Happy Birthday!

Here's what I posted on the blog survey...

"Crazy Aunt Purl's blog sent me here. And let me tell you, she inspires me to blog with more wittiness that I am really capable of IRL. She's amazing. And I want a free book, too."

Happy (Belated) Birthday!

I love your blog and I am glad you are on Earth! :)

Bossy agrees: the word Blog seems like something interesting spelled backward.

Happy birthday! Best wishes for a fantastic year to come.

Hope you had a great birthday!Someone that shares so much fun with the rest of us surely deserves it! Hope it's still going on! Use my rule for birthdays - the more you feel you're getting older (and I'm looking at 40 veryvery soon)The more you get to stretch out the cake, ice cream, cheeseburgers, beach trips (pants optional)and being a big, spoiled kid.

I like my rule

Happy Belated Birthday! I hope you had a wonderful start to signify a wonderful forthcoming year!

And I'm sure the cats helped you celebrate!

Happy Birthday Season! (Yes, you are so special you get a Birthday Season.) And congratulations on the 7th anniversary of your 29th Birthday!

Ugh. You know what's rolling up before July is out? My 50th birthday. It's not as if you can even congratulate a woman on her 50th birthday - not if you have any kind of heart at all.

You are younger than springtime still, kiddo!

Posted by: La BellaDonna at June 25, 2007 12:21 PM

That was poetic. What the cat said.:)

I second (or third or fourth or whatever) the recommendation to http://icanhascheezburger.com

Frankie and Bob would be perfect for the site!

Happy very belated Birthday!
The more birthdays the longer you have to get "it" right. Whatever it is. 36 is not old at all. Oldness is all in your head anyway.

Happy Birthday! Love your blog, so fun to find a new entertaining site to check in on every now and again. I found you through the Blogger's Choice Awards, you're nominated for Best Humor Blog. Hell if you add a Brag Badge and got everyone who wish you a Happy Birthday to click on it I think you'd be in fist place. The code is really easy to get. http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/876

Happy Birthday, Crazy Aunt Purl!
I am a faithful reader of your blog, but a very infrequent commenter. I did, however, send you an email today w/ a picture from the loverly Texas Hill Country, and as soon as I sent it, I remembered how bad you claim to be about email. So, I decided to give you a heads up here, hoping you will search out the picture. I know you will love it.
