What Would Brenda Leigh Johnson knit?

In another fine attempt to ensure I never find a boyfriend, here I am taking yet even more pictures of my television set because my favorite fictional best friends are taking up knitting, just like me!

In a blink-and-you-missed-it moment on the special 2-hour episode of The Closer last night, Brenda is off on a four-month paid administrative lead because of what happened on the season finale with the FBI-protected witness, Lt. Provenza and Detective Hot Sanchez. And Brenda is obviously not loving being off work, and has taken up some activities, one of which appears to be knitting!

closer1.jpg
Brenda reaching for a blanket, you see her knit stash.

closer2.jpg
Fritz holding Brenda's knitting on the sofa.

closer3.jpg
I am a big fat nerd, ya'll.

So, okay, I feel there is a line somewhere about ladies with cats and television shows they talk about as if these were real people and also that time I tried to convince someone I wanted to marry my Dyson, but whatever. Brenda Leigh Johnson, my favorite television person (sorry, Lorelai) knits! Or tried to, once.

Now if only Detective Hot Sanchez would give me a call so I could demonstrate my deep appreciation for television law enforcement. Ya'll know.

I love that show and I too caught the knitting reference! I was all like - Dude - she's knitting! My husband was not as amused as I...

Posted by: Jody at December 5, 2006 01:22 PM

forget the police officers...everyone knows that the cutest guys around, not to mention the most protective, are firefighters/EMTs...really!

Posted by: zina at December 5, 2006 01:25 PM

I'm outta the loop here. What's up with the pile of baseballs? Yarn and baseball. Great combo!!

Posted by: Rachel at December 5, 2006 01:26 PM

That is Fritz's baseball "sculpture" ... Fritz moved in with Brenda last season. I love this show more than is prolly healthy. She is the only TV character that I relate to really, she's got the same kind of drawl (her dialogue coach must be from where I grew up LOL) and her character is always in her head, bumbling through social things (ahem) but not meaning to be rude or anything.

I heart that show.

Posted by: laurie at December 5, 2006 01:28 PM

Laurie, how do you feel about Calleigh on CSI: Miami? Does she sound authentic to you? I love her character, but sometimes I wonder about the drawl...

Posted by: ccr in MA at December 5, 2006 01:34 PM

Okay you can't possibly know how distressing it is that I DON'T GET THAT SHOW WHERE I LIVE. It's been on A and E as a preview only once or twice but what is there not to like about that show. Knitting, single woman in her 30s, great at her job but socially a little off the wall. She has to have cats somewhere...I'm sure of it.

Posted by: Michelle at December 5, 2006 01:34 PM

YES!!! she has a cat who had kittens last season :) :)

Posted by: laurie at December 5, 2006 01:37 PM

CCR ... I adore the Calleigh character, I think that's part of the reason Miami is my fav CSI, and I love her voice, although she sounds so perfect, I always wanted that honey voice ("butter wouldn't melt in her mouth" heh) and instead I ended up twangy.

Is Emily Proctor a southerner, I wonder?

Posted by: laurie at December 5, 2006 01:39 PM

She's from North Carolina, does that count? Check her out:

Posted by: ccr in MA at December 5, 2006 01:41 PM

i've never seen that show, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but... is she *really* that small? she looks like a child next to him! i mean, in that second picture, i really did think she was a pre-teen. she's slouching, right? she's not that small?

Posted by: sparkle at December 5, 2006 01:42 PM

Maybe you could teach him the purl stitch. A guy needs something to do on those stakeouts.

Posted by: Lucia at December 5, 2006 01:44 PM

What are you going to do when one of these famous people contacts you? LOL... I think you should host Aunt Purl's Celebrity Knit-a-thon!!!

Posted by: RishaMoonshadow at December 5, 2006 01:46 PM

Hi Purl! I love reading your posts! You make me laugh! I have just lurked before - I finally decided to say hello! I hope it is ok if I have put you on my list of readables!

Posted by: Grandi at December 5, 2006 01:48 PM

Oh crap. Some guy who worked on The Closer wanted to marry me. He thought it was so cool that I could knit. The first few seasons of Gilmore Girls were my daughter(15) and myself(31), I mean so much so, that I often screamed in fear. How did they know Chris proposed to me, then the bell rang for class!!!?? Just countless similarities, until finally I stopped watching it 'cause it was embarrassing to see how neurotic I was on a weekly basis. Then The O.C. came on...much more complicated...and I watch just to see how much they get right. I now live with the drapes drawn closed....

Posted by: Jill at December 5, 2006 01:51 PM

That is my favorite show but of course I already knew you loved Brenda Leigh! I'm southern so I guess that doesn't hurt. She's great...almost as zanyily forgetful as Christine (aka Elaine).

Posted by: Cynthia at December 5, 2006 01:53 PM

I just discovered this show! So much fun! And I love that her name is Brenda Leigh, like Brenda Lee of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" fame. (Cultural reference from the dark ages, I know.)

Posted by: Nancy Knits at December 5, 2006 01:58 PM

Hey Jill, I know the feeling about shows being too much like your life... that happens to us with Medium (which I will admit to being hooked on). Often Hubby and I look at each other and wonder which of us has been secretly sending them videos of our life. Bridget on that show is SO a clone of my daughter....!

Posted by: RishaMoonshadow at December 5, 2006 02:16 PM

Yes I saw it too! and I whooped out loud! While knitting too.

Posted by: Melody Johnson at December 5, 2006 02:21 PM

I am SO gonna keep my eyes peeled for future hidden knitting treasures on all my favorite shows!

Posted by: AlliMack at December 5, 2006 02:27 PM

Thank YEEEW. I love Brenda Leigh. I like that Fritz sat on the knitting needle also. He needs a poke now and again. Err, don't we all...

Posted by: Marilyn at December 5, 2006 02:41 PM

Off subject and different network

I was glad to see Nate and Candice get the boot on Survivor I heart YYYYYYYuuuuuuullllll.

Posted by: psychomom at December 5, 2006 02:42 PM

I'm so with you on Det. HOT Sanchez but, (grinning stupidly) I am older and find Lt. Provenza has wormed his little way into my heart. The Closer is one of the few current TV shows my hubby and I agree on - Brenda Leigh is entirely human, charming and smart! Didn't you love it when she tried to keep her mother from finding out Fritz had moved in last season? LOL

Posted by: Leslie at December 5, 2006 02:44 PM

Law enforcement? What happened to the firefighters????

Posted by: Amanda at December 5, 2006 02:47 PM

I so thought of you when I saw those scenes last night. I knew what you would be thinking. I just love Brenda Leigh. Thank you, thank you very much!

Posted by: Shannon S. at December 5, 2006 02:59 PM

psychomom--- I also am in love with Yul. I believe he is perfect. And thank goodness ol' whiny Candice got the boot on Survivor! Yul = hotness AND smartness!

Firemen are always on the list, of course, but Det. Hotchez just really... uh. Lights my fire. LOL

Posted by: laurie at December 5, 2006 03:09 PM

I'm not going to say how old I am, but the firemen are looking too young these days.

I saw that episode of the closer yesterday and the one I have a crush on is the Police Chief Pope.

Posted by: kathleen2 at December 5, 2006 03:37 PM

I also thought of you when that scene came on last night! While knitting! But I was just a little skepical...Could Brenda stop eating long enough to knit??? And also, was this maybe a DIG at knitting??? Like, she's so depressed at being on leave (dead plants?), that she's (gasp!) taken up knitting! I certainly hope not, because I really like the Closer. Plus, I see the cat, but where is the cat hair everywhere???

Posted by: Kate at December 5, 2006 03:39 PM

Oh hell! I missed the new Closer. Thanks for the heads up. I will have to catch a rerun

Posted by: Kristy at December 5, 2006 03:39 PM

I think it is so funny that television and the movies have JUST NOW noticed that people knit.

Posted by: Annika at December 5, 2006 03:48 PM

At least, you had the follow thru to actually post about this, Auntie. I just thought about it last night. Then went back to knitting. *L*

Tonight they start re-airing the second season. Oh, and I spent Thanksgiving day watching season one. As long as you've got me, you have nothing to worry about, honey.

Posted by: Cookie at December 5, 2006 04:05 PM

I may have to start watching the Closer, if there's yarn AND baseball. Two of my favorite things! And who's this Detective Hot Sanchez I keep hearing about? :)

Posted by: Julie at December 5, 2006 04:11 PM

My dear Aunt Purl,
I wish I watched tv so I knew what shows you were refering too. Sadly, while I have a huge television set (ooops, see how old I am?) I only use it too play video games.
I am a non-knitting-nerd.
BUT.
All this is besides the point. What I REALLY want to say is LOVE YOU and glad you're making it through this crazy time of the year. Even if you have to take pictures of your tv.
Sincerely,
Tai

ps...who IS that guy Fritz? He's HOT!

Posted by: Tai at December 5, 2006 04:50 PM

I heart that show, too--big time. And I was so excited to see the yarn and the needles....but I had to face the sad fact that no real knitter would watch their significant other sit on their knitting and not immediatly grab it to see if it was harmed. Sigh. Another illusion shattered. (Mr. K pointed out that it was clear I was a knitter from the fact that I was more worried about the knitting then about the poor man's tush. Yeah...is there something wrong with that?)

Posted by: Ms. Knitingale at December 5, 2006 04:52 PM

Dude. Do you sit in front of the t.v., camera at the ready?! How else are you able to snap the pix in time?!?

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at December 5, 2006 04:55 PM

Wow, I didn't realize Brenda Leigh knitted, too. One more show I'll have to catch up on...

Posted by: Samantha at December 5, 2006 04:58 PM

I loved the (semi)knitting in this episode. Did you notice that she did not throw away the yarn when she got rid of her other hobbies? I love this show, but when I heard the actress speak in her real (i.e. not like us) voice, I was so disappointed.

Posted by: Donna at December 5, 2006 05:21 PM

How do I get a 4 month paid leave? I would love that!

Posted by: Kristyn at December 5, 2006 05:31 PM

Four month paid leave comes when a bad guy shoots up your squad room. I saw the knitting too and cheered! Yay Brenda and all her hot cohorts--even Lt. Tau!

Posted by: lorinda at December 5, 2006 05:46 PM

Please, I LIVE for the Golden Girls.

Posted by: veronica at December 5, 2006 06:16 PM

Is it wrong to want to marry your dyson? (Just wondering...)

Posted by: Christina at December 5, 2006 06:40 PM

I guess television writers are (late) jumping on the bandwagon of what's "hip". And watch out when that Julia Roberts knitting movie comes out next year -- it'll start showing up on Law & Order. Of course, Grey's Anatomy characters were hip to it in Season 2. Bring it!

Posted by: Mary in Virginia at December 5, 2006 07:31 PM

Laurie -- I think you and my mother are soul mates. My mother's favorite show is "Gilmore Girls," which I watched for the first time last week. Today, my mother was all excited about watching "The Closer," which I had never watched before. I watched it for two minutes, heard the Southern accent of the main character who works in downtown Los Angeles, and I immediately understood why you relate to this show! Are you as hard-assed with your clients as she is with those criminials?

Posted by: Neil at December 5, 2006 07:55 PM

I am watching last week's "Jericho" right now and guess what one of the women is doing? KNITTING!! And it's not one of the old women..it's the cute young IRS agent lady who is getting it on with the cute farmer guy.

Posted by: jennifer at December 5, 2006 08:02 PM

I think you're still ok. Now, if you were to start printing off the pictures of Sanchez, and framing them, and arranging them on your desk at work, then it would be cause for worry.

Posted by: Patti at December 5, 2006 08:18 PM

There is currently pending legislation in Massachusetts to allow women to marry their Dysons.

Just kidding.

Posted by: Sue F. at December 5, 2006 08:49 PM

(A comment loosely related to your post...well not related at all...just saying hi.)
Today, I gave a presentation in my morning class prefaced by the announcement "Sorry guys, I just don't get The Powerpoint." Later, I ran a knitting workshop. I had no lesson prepared; I just yapped. I talked about (not porn) drinking at least three times ("This crazy felted knitted bracelet bag is great for when you're druh...forgetful! I've tested it many times and no matter how liquored up I am nothing falls out of this purse!"), and told a story about my ex boyfriend who never came to visit me at college, I learned, because he was in drug rehab.
It reminded me so much of your early posts about going to the WeHo Stitch and Bitch, about meeting new people and just TALKING. Enough that I felt that I must share with you, person I have never met in real life, this story.
So, in conclusion, there is nothing wrong with taking pictures of your TV. Or similar behavior.

Posted by: Sarah at December 5, 2006 09:07 PM

I'm a non-knitter but love your show! I do, however, have four-legged children who shed a lot and a crappy vacuum. I know you've said before, but what flavor Dyson do you have?

Posted by: Sandee at December 5, 2006 09:14 PM

I LOVE The Closer. And I am so sick of people pronouncing it incorrectly. I cannot tell you how many times I heard some idiot say "closer" like "You're getting closer"...Joy Behar on The View for one, not to mention the radio personalities who had to plug the show for an ad. IT'S CLOSER YOU MORONS, LIKE "SHE IS THE CLOSER - SHE CLOSES THE DEAL!" Crap.

Anyhoo, I got all giggly when I saw that my best friend, Brenda Lee Johnson also knits.

Posted by: Manicmind at December 5, 2006 09:45 PM

Love, Love, Love The Closer! And I stayed up way past my bedtime to catch that scene a second time.
I was hooked on Brenda Leigh Johnson from the first promo for the show. This goes to show that there can be intellegent entertainment on the boob tube with a strong women in charge.
Now, when will be released on DVD?

Posted by: Kimberly at December 6, 2006 01:41 AM

found this on youtube. Real Men Knit... Thought of you when I saw it

It could be worse! You could get excited when you see Daisy Duck knitting a long ass sweater and your daughter looks at you weird because that's your favorite episode of Mickey Mouse Club House! Or how about your favorite episode of Big Comfy Couch where Grandma Garbanzo teaches Loonette how to knit and sings a song and tells a story about knitting! Of course, I haven't gone so far as to take pictures yet!! LOL But my daughter does think I'm a little whacky for pointing out the knitting EVERY time we watch them!

Posted by: Julie at December 6, 2006 05:14 AM

Emily Proctor went with the same accent on West Wing, so, maybe authentic?

I love Brenda Leigh...but,super-TV detectives are my thing...Det "Hotchez" is the best description. Fritz is delish, too...*sigh*

And then there are all the beautiful L&O men. Addicted, I tell ya.

Posted by: Shelly at December 6, 2006 05:46 AM

Yes, I noticed that she pitched the plants and not the knitting. We've made up a drinking game for the show. Every time she says thank you, you get to drink. There's only been one episode where we haven't gone through at least whole beer--no, don't try to chug a whole beer each time she says thank you because for some episodes you'll go through a whole case. The two-hour episode Monday was a real treat.

Posted by: Mary at December 6, 2006 05:50 AM

I love the knitting reference - especially the fact that Fritz sat on it by accident. I love The Closer too and I just knew Brenda would be a knitter.

Posted by: hillary at December 6, 2006 05:55 AM

Wow!! Great eye. I personally forgot this show was on, let alone a 2 hr one!! I love spotting knitting needles and yarn in the background of tv shows.

I love how you also said "fictional best friends."

Posted by: Jenn at December 6, 2006 06:31 AM

Har, you can tell she only just started because her stash is pathetically small--she clearly hasn't reached the exponential stash growth phase yet because the yarn hasn't taken over the room.
Seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jYa_rJyG18

Where is the cat hair? Well, now it's all over the back of Fritz's very nice dark suit.

Posted by: Dana at December 6, 2006 06:52 AM

"She's from North Carolina, does that count?"

Laurie, baby, if you could only hear me speak then you would have no doubts as to whether or not North Carolinians are southern! Heh, "twang" doesn't begin to cover it...

Posted by: Heather at December 6, 2006 07:02 AM

And I get a little smile every time they mention knitting on Grey's Anatomy - even though Meredith looks ridiculous in her attempts.

Actually, it's what I looked like when I was learning, so maybe that's why I like it.

Posted by: Jackie at December 6, 2006 07:23 AM

I love that they are showing programs with knitting at least somewhere in the show. It's kind of like finding Waldo! Makes me feel slightly less CCL with my cats and knitting (but only very slightly less!)

Posted by: Steph B at December 6, 2006 07:39 AM

I LOVE the Closer! I noticed the knitting right away. Brenda and Fritz are my favorite couple--such real characters. Fritz can sit on my knitting anytime--I think he is the bestest boyfriend on TV. My husband still thinks I watch this show for the plot. Heh. Now I can blame it on the knitting! Hey, maybe Brenda can replace her pastry fixation with knitting--that could really work for her! Quick, somebody write the show!

Posted by: Michelle at December 6, 2006 07:46 AM

4-month paid leave? Endless time to knit? I missed everything after that, I've moved into fantasy world.

Posted by: sarah at December 6, 2006 07:53 AM

Oh my, I love The Closer!!! I can't believe no one's mentioned Brenda Leigh's love/hate relationship with sweets and chocolate? I adore that about her! And I pretty much adore every single character on there - the episode when Flynn and Provenza were going to the ball game? Hilarious! The only character that disappoints me is Det. Irene Daniels. She's too normal and boring so far :)

Posted by: Tina at December 6, 2006 08:05 AM

Do you have the Brenda buddy for your computer? LOL I'm not a big closer fan. I don't like Kyra's fake southern accent. It's too fake.
Knit On Kyra!

I have become addicted to Grey's Anatomy. I'm not dating, I'm knitting. I absolutely love that show.

Posted by: lesley at December 6, 2006 08:50 AM

YAY! i LOVE BLJ as well. Female? Check! . . . Brilliant? Check! . . . A tad kooky? Check! . . . Cats? Check! . . . . and - KNITTING? CHECK!!!
Can't get better. :)

Posted by: Megs at December 6, 2006 09:12 AM

Woman! You need to get out more. Take your knitting and go sit somewhere outside your home away from that tv. Next thing you know, you will find yourself arguing with that tv, sadly enough, my Dad was known for that, he would argue with the weatherman. We would explain to him that the weatherman couldn't hear him but, he did it anyway. It has to be a Southern thing.
I love the pictures of your kitties, they are so sweet.

Posted by: Laura Neal at December 6, 2006 09:58 AM

You know, I missed the whole knitting thing while I was watching (though my husband didn't, and why he didn't say anything, I don't know-- I'm sure there was a smart-ass comment rolling around in his brain). And why, you might ask, would I miss it? BECAUSE I WAS KNITTING!!! I was listening to more than watching the show because I'm trying to get all these freakin' Christmas presents finished! Lace and one of your favorite TV shows do not mix! When will I learn! pay attention to one, miss the other, pay attention to the other, screw up the one! Oy!

Posted by: AnneMarie at December 6, 2006 10:55 AM

Oh, you're kidding me. I actually turned the TV off because nothing good was on last night, and I missed it? Damn. Let that be a lesson to me never to shut off the TV again.

Posted by: Becca at December 6, 2006 11:30 AM

Hi Laurie!!

Did you and Annie and Drew have a good time at dinner last night? (I'm not a stalker....Annie mentioned it on her blog!)

I'm hoping that no one needed to be bailed out afterwards!!! ;oD

I just got the first season of Gilmore Girls from Netflix. We didn't have a WB affiliate here in Richmond (in the boondocks) so I've never seen it. I'll be knitting and watching tonight.

Posted by: Liz R at December 6, 2006 11:57 AM

Hmmm. Missed the knitting book on "Closer" - will have to watch the tape I made for my daughter! However, did you catch last week's episode of Gilmore Girls? Lorelei (and the rest of Star's Hollow) was knitting! A great, big Knit-a-thon! So don't give up on her yet! :)

Posted by: Amy at December 6, 2006 12:07 PM

Yes I was there and I watched it. I just love all the knitting that shows up everywhere these days.
:)

Posted by: Micky at December 6, 2006 12:28 PM

So, Laurie, from now on when I read your blog, I'll imagine it being read by Brenda. :-) The Closer is a great show! Ironically, I had needles in hand when I looked up for a split second and saw her knitting stash on the TV. Isn't the cat's name "Kitty"?

Posted by: Jeanne at December 6, 2006 03:37 PM

Oh my gosh... I can't believe it. I was watching that show. I've never seen it before but it looked interesting. O.K. I misread the screen and thought it was the movie Closer and I wanted to see (the hot) Clive Owen.

I'm so going to add this to my TiVo subscriptions!

Posted by: Lorraine at December 7, 2006 02:27 PM

OK. So at your recommendation -- and with the teeny tiny idea in my extra large brain that I've seen an episode and really liked it -- I (acquired) the first season of The Closer. I'm on the fourth episode and l-o-v-e love it. Thanks!
