Project 365 ... maybe.
As you may recall, I am someone who LOVES to make New Year's Resolutions, and I start thinking of them prior to the New Year so I have an idea of where I want to go in the next 365 days of my life. I'm not sure if I actually feel any real sense of urgency about completing items on the list, it's more of an ongoing goal-making exercise. I just like to keep some sense of focus in my life, however silly or ridiculous it may seem.
I read about this thing called The 365 Project, where you take a photo a day for the next year. I am thinking of doing it, not because I need to take more pictures (I carry my camera with me everywhere I go as it is, and tend to annoy both humans and felines with the volume of photo-snapping that goes on) but because I think it would be fun, and kind of challenging to select which picture perfectly sums up a day in your life.
I don't know if I would post them, or just file them away in a folder somewhere, or maybe print them out at the end and make something with them. But it seems like a fun idea, something I might enjoy. I don't want it to become just another committment, though, another hassle in an overstressed day. And I already take a bazillion pictures a week! Then again, it might be an interesting way to document your life. Maybe instead of digital, I could go old school and Polaroid my year. That would at least make a nice collage at the end.
Would you ever think of doing something like this? Would you keep the pictures private, or would you share them? Would you worry it would become just another obligation? And what would you do with the 365 pictures at the end of a year?

I WISH I had the dedication for something like that. If I did it, though, I would share the ones I wanted to and keep private some, too. Keep at least one a week to myself, though :)

Also, the Roy kiss picture is adorable. I tried taking pictures of my cat last night, and either he is unphotogenic or I am untalented. It's really a toss up!
Posted by: e. at December 20, 2006 10:37 AM
I could *so* take a gazillion pictures. But I would have to go digital, b/c I still have two shopping bags full of pics I took in Italy (ITALY!) 10 years ago before I was married and I still had a life.
Sigh.

For Christmas gifts for my parents, my husband and I put together a photo book at shutterfly.com. I think I would do that with these pictures, and then have a book of our year. Since I'm planning to become pregnant and have a baby this year, it might be very interesting to see what my year in pictures looks like at the end.
Posted by: Leah at December 20, 2006 10:40 AM
Wow! Such a cool idea! If I did it, I would definitely share the pix, though maybe not with the world at large.
Posted by: Lisa at December 20, 2006 10:42 AM
Awww! Very cute. I think I could easily take 365 pictures in a year - and most of them would be cat pictures. :)
Posted by: Amy at December 20, 2006 10:43 AM
It would be an obligation for me and even though it would be tough and nerve wrecking I think it would be worth it in the end. If someone was intrested, I would share. I love the Poloroid idea, digitals are too easy to delete and try again.
I hope you kissed all the kitties. Share the love.

Now that I have a digital camera, I am forever taking pictures of things, that is when I remember I have a digital camera. I still forget to take it with me places and miss many a photo op. Working on that tho. Check out my Cat Tug O'War pictures I just posted! I also have a kiss-kiss picture of the kitten (who I will have to stop calling a kitten as of St. Paddy's Day) who is loving on my face.
I think the "photo a day" is a fun idea, not so obligatory and stressful, because you could take a pic that captures the !@#$% moment, like the finger, a cat turd, or what have you if you are having a bad day and call it good. And then, good days would be triggered by a fab pic!
Posted by: Samantha at December 20, 2006 10:46 AM
Leah -- I once saw the website of a man who took a pic a day of his pregnant wife, and the resulting montage was amazing! If you do get knocked up (heh) maybe you could have your husband take a pic a day of you?
I worry that a committment to take a pic every day and post it would make me really anxious and feel pressured. But I like the general idea of it...
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 10:47 AM
Psychomom-- they have a free photo "blog" site called Photoblog: www.photoblog.com. And I like it because it's faster (to me) than flickr, which sometimes loads painfully slow on my computer.
You could do a photoblog!
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 10:48 AM
I look like I am about to slurp off Roy's face in that picture... he is the only cat who loves me making kissy noises on his fur. He thinks it's awesome. He is kind of like a dog that way :)
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 10:50 AM
For me I'm afraid it would become an obligation - every damn year I start a journal, and by mid-February I'm sick to death of it. :) Chances are I'd be the same way with the pictures. But as you say, you take a bazillion pictures a day anyway ...maybe you wouldn't even have to make any major changes. You could just keep taking a bazillion pictures a day, and at the end of each day print out the one you want for official representation. (Easy enough for me to plan what you're going to do, lol. Sorry about that!)
Awwww...I wish I could kiss the Roy! I'll have to go kiss my own sleeping-old-lady kitty. :)

Notice how on Monday I said I would be taking a break from writing? Writing I can't *not* do... I would do it in my sleep if I could. But uploading and internet stuff is sometimes a hassle, so maybe I will take the pics and see how it goes. I pretty much take a picture every day anyway.
I like the idea of doing the photo album like on shutterfly or something.
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 10:57 AM
Flicker and everything is slow when you are home on dial up. High speed internet is the only reason I work, hee hee.
A photoblog is probably a good idea because writing is much harder than it looks. You make it look easy.
Posted by: psychomom at December 20, 2006 10:57 AM
I too love the Poloroid idea! That would make the one picture definite and special. At the end of the year I think I would make an album. Just don't stress to find the Perfect Photo and the obiligation factor will decrease. Happy Holidays! ps I found your blog while searching for hat patterns and the Brangelia was perfect - thank you!
Posted by: heather at December 20, 2006 11:01 AM
This also reminds me of the family that took a picture of themselves on the same day every year for 20 years. That's a really neat idea, too. http://zonezero.com/magazine/essays/diegotime/time.html
Posted by: Leah at December 20, 2006 11:02 AM
POST, POST, POST!!!!
I love your photos now so I think that would be great!
Posted by: Cathie at December 20, 2006 11:04 AM
I think it's a really good idea. I'm going to contemplate this myself. And on those total hassle, "this feels like an obligation" days, take the photo anyway. It'll just be a documentation of the kind of day it is, or how you're feeling. Not every photo needs to be the perfect snapshot of a day.
I'd probably post some and not others. You could make one of those cool ibooks at the end, although I really like the collage idea. Go for it. Think of all the writing it will provoke . . . oh, well maybe not such a good idea... (o:
Posted by: Julie at December 20, 2006 11:09 AM
What about Project 52? Do one a week and take the pressure off? Just a thought. I love the idea.
Posted by: Rachel at December 20, 2006 11:15 AM
I think it's a fantastic idea. As someone who has accumulated over 600 pics in her photobucket album in less than a year I do like takin' me some pics.
Polaroid or digital ... polaroid or digital ...
Posted by: April at December 20, 2006 11:15 AM
I don't think I would have thought of doing something like that, although I think it's an intriguing idea. I would share some and keep some private. I guess it would depend on what one had in mind when taking the photo. Some photos would only be meaningful to oneself. I would worry that it would become just another obligation, but maybe a worthwhile one. I don't know what I would do with the photos at the end of the year. I would have to wait and see.
Posted by: Pamela at December 20, 2006 11:19 AM
I love this idea. I wouldn't be able to post or upload or whatever my pictures every day, but I think that I could handle taking the picture every day without getting too tired of it. Maybe you could take a picture each day and then have one post per week called "The Week in Pictures" or something along those lines. I am not sure what I would do at the end. I could make a little book for myself, I suppose, if the project turned out well. Hmmmm... something to think about. (PS Damn, I am such a nerd!)
Posted by: -R- at December 20, 2006 11:24 AM
I had a friend whose husband was a professional photographer. They took a photo of their newborn in a onesie every week for his first year and made a montage of it. In one of the photos, they put sunglasses on the kid, and he cracked a huge, gummy smile. They were great pix!
I love, love, love New Year's. And Laurie, there is one New Year's tradition you absolutely have to do: you must make sure you have money in your pockets on New Year's Eve and all New Year's Day. I don't care if you're staying home and just wearing jeans or sweatpants - put a couple of twenties in your pockets, or your shoes, if you have to.
It's supposed to bring you more money in the year ahead. Works for me! It's kind of the reason people kiss at midnight - hoping for more love in the New Year. Well, if you don't have a guy to kiss (yet) then kiss the kitties and put money in your pockets.
It does get better. Really.
Posted by: OtherLisa at December 20, 2006 11:35 AM
R... I thought about the book idea, too. Maybe the thing for me is that with my own unique brand of nerdiness, I need to think this project will have some sort of "finale" ... like a mousepad, or installation art (hah) or an album. Or calendar.
I need some kind of tangible result from a thing like that, I guess because it seems more like crafts. And crafts... need to have an end in mind ;) This much I have learned over the years of half-finished craft projects strewn throughout my life. And kitchen table.
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 11:40 AM
Wow, thanks for the photoblog.com site. I am so putting my Africa pictures on photoblog. Someday...
Posted by: e. at December 20, 2006 11:42 AM
Other Lisa... I love that superstition! I had never heard of it before.
I have heard that whatever you do on New Year's Day will define your year... so I make sure not to clean house that day (don't want to spend a whole year cleaning up messes) LOL
Oh! and you gotta eat your black eyed peas or you have bad luck. My dad calls me about seven times to remind me about the damn black eyed peas.
I think 2007 will be a very good year. I'm quite hopeful about it :)
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 11:43 AM
PhotoBlog is FREE and works like a combo of blogger and flickr... but it loads quite fast, I think.
www.photoblog.com
Posted by: laurie at December 20, 2006 11:45 AM
I don't think I would have a hard time taking a picture-a-day ... I am a picture taking freak as it is ... but my problem would be organizing the "this is my one official photo of the day" pictures, making a digital album or something to keep them separated ...
but it sounds like a really fun idea. You could end up with a really cool photo-essay at the end of the year.
Of course, since I am nosy and voyeuristic-- I say POST!! Post them all! But realistically, probably only some would be interesting to others, and some could be personal. You could maybe do a project 365 for yourself and start a weekly highlight for your blog ... once a week pick a picture from the previous week and post for all of us to see!
Posted by: Jessica at December 20, 2006 11:46 AM
I think it sounds like a great idea! I'm very tempted to do it myself. I'd probably just put them on flickr, I already put all my pictures there but tag them 365 or something. The Polaroid idea is cool too!
Posted by: Bobbi at December 20, 2006 11:52 AM
Don't forget the black eyed peas! I torture all my friends with that one every year.
Posted by: Lucy at December 20, 2006 11:58 AM
I've been thinking about this myself for a little while now. I know a woman who started it but gave up after about 3 weeks; I wonder how taxing it would start to feel. I was thinking about maybe doing it weekly, not on the same day each week but select one shot a week. 52 seems far more doable. I also wonder about the staged-ness of it all; would I feel as if I were "faking it" for the sake of the self-portrait? I'm not sure. I thought starting Jan 1 would be nice, too, so I have limited time in which to make my final decision.
Posted by: Mintyfresh at December 20, 2006 12:04 PM
10 years ago I did a self portait everyday for one month. That was back when you had to have film developed! The dawn of time!! It is so interesting to go and look at those photos now. I am amazed at the difference in how I appear in every photo. I look like 30 different people who all kind of look like me.

My former sister-in-law did this when she did daycare for my other former sister-in-law's newborn baby boy. She kept them all in her digital camera, then picked on per day (she shot many per day) and printed those out and slapped them in an album for the mom and dad on the kid's b-day. It was AWESOME.
I think that Santa *cough*mom*cough is bringing me a new digital camera this year and I would totally consider doing this.
I also thought about a project like this but focusing it on a single object. There used to be this magnificent oak tree a few blocks away I always thought would be a great subject. Sadly it was taken down last year to make room for a parking lot. (Don't get me started.)
I say go for it. Might even join you.
Posted by: Becky at December 20, 2006 12:08 PM
What a great idea! I probably won't get around to blogging everyday but I might be able to manage a photo. I'm totally going to do this. This next year is my 40th year and I think it would be a really interesting one to document. Well, I hope it is interesting.
Posted by: Laurie at December 20, 2006 12:15 PM
I totally want to do this. And I would probably make some kind of book at the end of the year, but never look at it again for a decade. :)
Posted by: Gwen at December 20, 2006 12:15 PM
I'm currently on day 85 of a 365 self-portrait project. I don't take my camera everywhere - in fact, I usually just take my photo after work every day. Sometimes it's a pain in the butt and I just take something quickly, but most of the time it's really fun to document something I'm doing or come up with a really elaborate set up.
Joining a group, like the 365 Flickr group is good because people really keep you motivated. The fun of it has far outweighed the occasional hassle, although I still haven't figured out what to do with the photos at the end of my 365.
Posted by: mac at December 20, 2006 12:16 PM
My bad luck streak stopped when I gave up black eyed peas for New Year's. Seriously.
I love the photo idea. And I also love that you can't stop writing, if only for the selfish reason that I love reading your writing.
Posted by: Kathy at December 20, 2006 12:17 PM
digital cameras make it so much cheaper to do a project like that! would be fun to snap photos w/ hubby for a year just for fun - he'd be into that for sure, we'd probably share some but maybe not ALL. I like the pose-in-the-exact-same-spot idea.
by the way check out this great link:
www.guessmygift.com it needs sound.
Posted by: AlliMack at December 20, 2006 12:18 PM
i usually take at least one photo a day - and go through phases where i take one photo a day to post, not just take. It definitely helps your photography and this project also gives you a 'focus', which i think is nice. As for what do do with them, the beautiful thing is that you can do whatever you want, although i think it would be fun to have a book made up from them from the iPhoto store or a similar service.

I thought you were supposed to eat Sauerkrawt and pickled herring? UUUUGH Reason #22 to hate my Mother in Law.. SHE TOLD to eat those things!
This year.. nothing but Black Eyed Peas!
I saw an exhibit once where this guy took pictures of these three sisters... over like more than 20 years of their lives.. FREAKING AMAZING.. scary amazing too.. bad clothing choices, big hair and all.. I vote to do it.. and post it

Hey - I'll delurk for this one!
I just gotta say, in 2004 I did the Photo A Day thing. Not as a journal, per se, as I'm a photographer, but more of just a project, a challenge.
Let me tell you, it was so fun when I first started off, but then after a while, it became very draining on not only me, but also my husband and two sons. I can look back on those pictures now and feel glad that I did it, but man, those last two months were hell.
I'm just sayin.
BUT, as a journal, I think it might be fun. And a great way to document the goings on of your life.
Give it a try! If it doesn't work out, there's no law that says you can't stop. And if it does work out, what a great photo journal you'll have!
As much as the project was taxing, I do so love to look back on mine.
Posted by: AJ at December 20, 2006 12:31 PM
I've heard of this project and have thought of doing it myself. But, I'm not exactly that photogenic (at least in my eyes) and my photography skills can leave something to be desired...
I like the idea of a Project 52...less pressure on yourself.
And if not photos of yourself, what about the kitties? You could compile a calendar of the best shots and raise some money for charity(ies) next year.
And I'm definitely stuffing my shoes with $20...and eating black eyed peas. I've never heard of either of those superstitions. Growing up we had to eat at least one bite of sauerkraut for a prosperous New Year.
I hope 2007 is better for us all...

Okay, I love this idea and definetly love the old school idea of polaroid. Thinking about signing up for this baby. One of my committments/resoulutions is to start a blog to track my world so this would be interesting for certain.
Maybe I will ask Santa/DH for a camera this xmas...though we did say no gifts - we are giving each other 5 committments and will be gifted at the completion of each.
Posted by: Darci at December 20, 2006 12:45 PM
Someone may have already mentioned this, but there was a guy who took a picture of everything he ate for an entire year which I think ended up as a book. And of course, the guy who took his picture every day for six years and combined them all into a fascinating video montage which everyone has seen on YouTube.
There's also the guy who photo-blogs about every critter his dog, um, shall we say, "hunts" and brings home as a "trophy". A little too gruesome for my taste.
I think if I had a brilliant subject to photograph every day, I'd be inspired enough to do it. Like maybe the construction of a new building that I drive by every day, or a brand new baby to watch grow up. The planting and growth of a new garden.
Oh, here's a thought -- you paint, right? Why not take a photo every day of a painting you're working on? And if you don't want to share your artistic process on a day-to-day basis, then keep it in a private blog that you share at the beginning of 2008, along with photos of your finished artwork? That way, you get to be creative and inspired, all at the same time. :-)

Ooh! Oooh! Me! Me!
I was already planning on taking one picture a week (same bat-time, same bat-location) for the year starting on New Year's day. I haven't decided whether to go digital or my 50 cent wide angle wonder.
going to look at Photoblog.
Posted by: k at December 20, 2006 12:53 PM
I do love the idea of old skool polaroid, but I want to say digital. Its a little bit easier to transfer. I guess you can take your digital pictures and post them with the polaroid border to make them look old skool, but not the same.
If you don't think that you can keep up with it, then don't. It shouldn't be that way. I would look at your 365 if you do it, like everyone else. I would somewhat enjoy it, but nothing exciting happens in my life though.

What a great idea! When my son was born we took photos and video of him every Sunday for his first year. (This was before digital!) and it is so amazing to see him grow right before our eyes!
Taking a photo of me every day would just keep track of how many pimples and/or wrinkles I added that day. Freckles, too!
That picture of you and Roy is so precious! Your love for him and his love for you shines through so beautifully!
Posted by: Liz R at December 20, 2006 01:00 PM
Alrighty! I'm gonna do it. I have several new things ahead as goals for 2007 and what better way to document them? I'll probably be muttering under my breath by February, but what the hell?
Posted by: Anne at December 20, 2006 01:02 PM
I've been seriously considering this type of project for a few months and just recently decided to go ahead and commit to it. I've had the same reservations that several have already mentioned. But I decided to go ahead anyway because I need it to feed the creative beast. Part of the reason for it for me is to work on getting less hypercritical of the stuff I do. I put too much pressure on myself to make every creative thing "good". This is coming from someone who firmly believes that only 10% of writing, drawing, painting, etc. is going to be good, which means I need to stick with it in order to slog through the other 90%. (Hopefully my knitting is seeing a better ratio!) The liberating moment was when it hit me that it just needs to be a PICTURE each day, not necessarily a superfantastical work of art picture each day. Fear of sucking is an invisible shackle. I know full well that if I can commit to one pic a day I will end up with much more and all of that will feed the creative machine-writing, drawing, yarn-painting, you name it. For me it's a means of poking my left brain to make it do its thing! Now if I can just stick with it... :)
Posted by: Tanya at December 20, 2006 01:03 PM
Correction: poking the RIGHT brain. See how badly the other side wants to keep control? :D
Posted by: Tanya at December 20, 2006 01:05 PM
Laurie,
If you ever doubt how pretty you are, just look at that picture. Seriously.
Posted by: Susan at December 20, 2006 01:16 PM
What about taking a picture of the same place every day, to map the changes over a year??? Somewhere like a park or your yard although even a busy corner could be interesting....
The 'chick has not the dedication (or digital camera) for such a project, but that would be what she would do.
Posted by: Roadchick at December 20, 2006 01:17 PM
Black-eyed peas give me gas. Does that mean I'll have gas all year?
Posted by: Marilyn at December 20, 2006 01:21 PM
I think that's a cool idea. I think that it would be fun as long as you don't get in the mindset of "Oh crap, I have to take a picture today" and get all stressed out about it (like I would). I think that I would keep some for myself and put some up on the internet. I think I would go digital, myself.
And the pic of you and Roy is really cute :-)
Posted by: vsoul at December 20, 2006 01:22 PM
I took a photo a day every day this year (ok so I did miss a day or two but I have good reasons!) and I LOVED doing this. It makes you look at the world around you, hunting for something that makes a good photo. Sometimes you get one, sometimes you don't. You can check out my photos here: http://reebeckiphotofriday.blogspot.com
Posted by: Rebecca at December 20, 2006 01:24 PM
Someone mentioned sauerkraut on New Year's; never heard of that. Black-eye peas is a Southern tradition on New Year's. I make the Hoppin' John recipe which includes rice and ham or sausage. Mmmmmm! You have to get them early, though. My Kroger here in Texas sells out of them fast as soon as Christmas is over!
What a sweet picture of you and Roy! Love it!
Posted by: Leeny at December 20, 2006 01:28 PM
I have been thinking about this a lot since I really enjoy looking at the photo a day on dooce.com. I want to be a better photographer!
I really like the photos you post, it is hard to imagine you could get better but a project like this *would* make you better...what a fun goal to work toward.
This could be fun!
Posted by: Deanna at December 20, 2006 01:34 PM
Please do it and PLEASE post them...we all want to see how our CAP is doing. Yes, every single day!
Posted by: aileen at December 20, 2006 01:34 PM
Personally, if I felt like I *had* to take a photo a day, every day, for an entire year, I'd get annoyed, then mad, then extremely pissed off. And if I wasn't smart/lazy enough to stop it, would likely end up with things like: "Day 243. Yet another photo of the floor. Yeah! The floor! I'm sick and tired of this, so it's the damned floor! Again! Hahahahahahah!"
Oh. ::looks at everyone:: Er...did I type that in public?
I'd rather try to write every day. That's kinda what my blog's for, trying to get me to write (as well as knit more), after years of not being able to get myself to write anything. But that's just me, y'know. If it intrigues you, give it a whirl! And I'd post 'em - believe me, after all that work, yeah, I'd post 'em somewhere. Or something.
(PS - Laurie, have you read the Yarn Harlot's blog today and seen Phil Boncer's comment? He likes to shop *and* lives in Southern CA. Plus reads the YH; y'gotta admit, this is a good sign. [g])

When I got my cell phone I took a picture a day of my dog and emailed them to my husband. My dog is my muse and I never realized how fulfilling it could be to take pictures of the same subject every day. But I pretty much keep them private unless someone wants to know what my dog looks like because I don't think anyone else but my husband would appreciate the nuances of the different pictures--look, here in this one she's getting ready to bark at me for a treat! I think I need to graduate to taking pictures with a real camera, though.

A friend of mine who is a visual artist does a lot of volume work--a painting a day--and it is so cool to see how they emerge from each other. You've got me thinking that I might do this...maybe post once a week using the Flickr mosaic. It would be a fun challenge, and a cool way to be more aware of my world.
Posted by: Beverly at December 20, 2006 01:40 PM
For about the first six months of this year, I took a picture of the resevoir I drive past on my way to work every time I drove past it. Then my camera broke, and I went about two weeks without taking the picture. By the time the camera came back, I had lost interest.
But maybe 2007 is the year . . .
Posted by: Liz at December 20, 2006 01:45 PM
id love to do that but id eventually forget. And id post 7 but once a week because again with the forgetting. I do love polaroids, but they would be harder to post. I think its a great idea. Im guessing that 287 will be pics of felines :)

I just got a new camera (Nikon Coolpix P4) and because Macro Mode is so easy, I started taking closeups of things. They look so much better that way!
I've already started posting (not one a day, though) and think I'll keep going for another 355 days!
My old Polaroid is fun, but at $1 a picture for the film, I'll take the digital path!

Laurie...
This is such an awesome idea. I take zillions of pictures as well, so I could easily do this with no problem.
I would share as many as I could on my blog, and at the end of the year I would be tempted to put all of them in an album of some kind. Kind of a retrospective of the year.
I think I'm going to do this, or at least try to. Thanks for inspiring me!

You know, that's a really great idea!
I think I may just have to try it. :)

i saw this project on photojojo and i'm thinking i'm going to give it a try. a picture a day, i think i can do. like you i carry my camera around almost everywhere and then for christmas i'm getting a nice fancy schmancy camera so at least i'll have a new toy to use.
you say photoblog is good? i was going to use flickr but maybe i'll give photoblog a go.
Posted by: maryse at December 20, 2006 02:12 PM
duh. you saw it on photojojo too.

i have the 69th post. heh heh
lovely photo of you and roy by the way.

Oh, now you've done it! ;o) I found your blog through a link from bootstrap-productions.blogger.com. The 365 Project is the perfect solution to a couple of my own resolutions. I've been looking for some way to increase my communications with far away friends and family this year. I'll have to work out the details, but this is a great place to start! Thanks!
Posted by: paige at December 20, 2006 02:17 PM
Girl I'll do it with you! I think it would be something fun to do to break the monotomy of my life! LOL It would make you appreciate your days more too! That would be fun and I would share it with everyone. It could also help with your outlook of that day.

Samantha-- "kitten" is a state of mind, not a one year time limit. I have a two and a half year old kitten. She was abandoned by her birth mother, and hand-raised by me. She had real failure to thrive issues, and I'm convinced never had that hormone shower teenagers of every species go through. Anyway, I call her my perma-kitten.

Laurie,
I soooo love that idea, I am the type to get totally enthusiastic about something I start but then I never finish!!! Maybe I can make this part of my New Years resolution...this definatley sounds like fun...I too like the superstition of keeping the money in your pockets I will try that one too this year!!!
I soo love the picture of you and Roy!!!!
Posted by: Yonancy at December 20, 2006 02:27 PM
I fought all through 11:30 to 1:00 am last New Year's Eve with a boyfriend I didn't like anyway, and was shamefully treating poorly - and guess what? My love life STUNK and I was hurt repeatedly all year long...I'm fine about it, but I'm just sayin' - I KNEW at the time it was going to screw up my whole year! I'm spending NYE with my BEST friend and her sister this year, so I KNOW 2007 will rock.
I like your idea of a pic a day...I'll do it.
Merry Christmas, dear heart!
I'm makin' black eyed peas, too, but vegetarian style! I don't dance with the hog jowl in my house!! XO
Posted by: marissa at December 20, 2006 02:32 PM
gotta have collard greens and corn bread along with those black eyed peas! (cooked by someone who knows how, of course)
in that pic of you and Roy you look like Leanne Rimes ...
Posted by: AlliMack at December 20, 2006 02:33 PM
That would be way too many pictures of my kitchen/living room. I prefer to focus on the knitting. It mostly doesn't talk back or demand food.
Posted by: Dorothy B at December 20, 2006 03:07 PM
Don't forget the collard greens on New Year's Day. Black-eyed peas for good luck and collards for folding money.

What a lovely photo...
I don't know about the committment to do 365. I feel like I care barely get enough taken as it is! I love to take pics, though...maybe Santa will bring me a nicer camera?
Not that Santa reads this, but, you know...hint, hint...

What a great idea. My blog mojo has been dead for awhile and my hubby has been bugging me to be more active at editing my photos....this is a great project to combine the two. Thanks for the link!

Poloriod is the way to go. You are artistic, and would find the best shot for the day even if you took a couple a day!!
Posted by: Kim at December 20, 2006 03:23 PM
Laurie, thanks for the link to Project 365. Santa is bringing me a digital SLR for Christmas -- well, whenever I get around to ordering it -- and there are some great reasons to do the project listed at the website. Like this one:
Taking a photo a day will make you a better photographer. Using your camera every day will help you learn its limits. You will get better at composing your shots, you’ll start to care about lighting, and you’ll become more creative with your photography when you’re forced to come up with something new every single day.
Good enough for me! I may or may not post them, but I sure will take them. And maybe I'll even print them! That's the downside of digital cameras for me ... nothing ever gets printed!
Posted by: Debbi at December 20, 2006 03:26 PM
I think it sounds like a fun idea. If I were to do the 365 days, I would take a picture of my Munchkins each day, just to see how much they change over a year. Oooh, that's actually a really good idea!
Posted by: Amanda at December 20, 2006 03:26 PM
I posted about this today too. I found the project description the other day and just couldn't stop thinking about it.
What I did is make a flickr set, then I plan to stick the pictures there and have a book printed at the end of the year. Here is the book printing place in case you decide to go digital and you want your own book. http://www.qoop.com/photobooks/flickr_user/

Recently, I attended a photography session where they talked about time lapse photography (taking consecutive photos at various intervals). Afterwards, you can make a mini movie from your photos. It's actually very cool and I'd love to try it myself. Here's a link where someone took photos of them decorating their Christmas tree.
http://www.tiffanyandandrew.com/content/2006/12/4/time-lapse-christmas-tree
P.S. I found my way to your site via Neil from Citizen of the Month. I've been enjoying your blog ever since. :)

I love the idea, but I'm not sure if I could be that consistent!
Your kissing the Roy picture made me smile.

I actually started doing this a few months ago... but then sort of slacked off on it. But personally I'd like to pick it back up and keep a daily photo blog... Think it'd be really interesting to see a year of my life in photos.

Thanks Laurie. At first I was thinking Project 365 would be a totally pain in the booty after a month. Then realized special days like today would be lost.
Started my Project 365 today and on photoblog.
you rock!
Posted by: Debbie at December 20, 2006 03:59 PM
I've been considering this one for a while as well.... I think I 'm finally to the point where I'll actually do it and keep with it. I would take and keep them digital and at the end of the year either put them up as a blog or book em and give them away to parents and stuff.
Thanks for reminding me. Maybe I'll start it now and see how I do till the end of the month. kind of like a trial run....
Love and Laughter,

What a great idea! My life is like a soap opera, I think I'd have a lot of fun with this. I'd love to see you do it Laurie, and I would totally lurk on any other people's sites that were devoted to this.
One person on here mentioned taking a picture of a tree a day for a year. That sounds awesome.
I think for mine I'd like to take a picture of me with whomever I'm with that particular day: boyfriends, daughter, husband (or ex as the case may be next year), family members, friends, or just me and my cat or whatever other pets I may happen to acquire. Every year something crazy happens in my life and every year I kick myself for not documenting it. 2007 should prove to be pretty eventful!
Thanks for the great idea!

I've been doing 365 Days for a couple months now ... I'm doing it with the flickr 365 days group. All my photos are posted with public access in my flickr 365 Days set.
I've missed a couple days here and there, but it's been a lot of fun!
Posted by: mivox at December 20, 2006 05:40 PM
I'm actually doing this; I started in early November. I'm printing out the photos (2x3 size) and gluing them in a spiral-bound appointment calendar. I write a little descriptive comment next to each one. Barnes & Noble has exclusive 8"x10" appointment calendars that are perfect for this project as the spaces for each day are large enough to accommodate the photos. The calendars span Aug 2006 to Dec 2007, so I was able to get started early and having ripped out the extra pages, there's room to accomodate the thickness of the photos. I am LOVING my book so far, even though only a few pages are done. It's a tangible reminder of what I was doing that day and, as the 365 Project web site promises, you will discover what's important to you. Even when you think you can't find something interesting to photograph, you will - and you'll find yourself looking at everything around you a little more intently and with greater appreciation. I think the book keeps me going much more effectively than merely posting the photos on a web site, because putting the photos in and writing the little blurbs is really enjoyable and something I always look forward to. I hope you'll give it a try!
Posted by: Lisa at December 20, 2006 05:47 PM
It has potential for sure! There was a book this year, composed of all the pictures this guy took of everything he ate for the whole year. There were also side benefits: he started looking more closely at what he was eating, he lost weight, he got a book deal, and he realized he was eating a lot of dry cereal for supper.

I've been toying with an idea like this for our Autistic son - a differnet view of each day with him. Most days are wonderful. Some days are living hell. And a few days break your heart.
Posted by: The Other Dagny at December 20, 2006 06:13 PM
Yes, I would think of doing it; I might or might not share the pictures (or, for maximum OCD, I might take two for each day, one private and one to share); yes, I would worry about its becoming another chore; I would think about making an online album but probably never get around to it.
Do you have any recommendations for someone who wants a new camera?
Posted by: Lucia at December 20, 2006 07:46 PM
I would share them, absolutely. Am thinking about doing it except my camera is acting bad lately. Instead of a nice full color screen I have pink and green pictures. I think I am down a sensor. But maybe I can take a pink and green picture every day?
Posted by: Jen at December 20, 2006 08:06 PM
I totally tried this last year! I was really good for about 20 days, and then I forgot to take a picture one day. And then I forgot the next day. And then I figured "Meh, I've ruined it...maybe I'll try again next year."
Posted by: Jessica at December 20, 2006 08:12 PM
Adorable picture of you and Roy!
I did Nablopomo (blog everyday for the month of November) and though I made it through, there were some days it was a royal pain in the ass. Not sure I could commit to something as big as 365 pictures!
Posted by: Kim at December 20, 2006 08:15 PM
I did it in 1998: http://willa.com/mood.htm They were webcam photos, so not the best quality, but it was fun. God, my hair was long then!

On day one, take a pic of the pea pot. Oh, my lord, I heart the blackeyed peas! when I was a child my mom would wake me up and fed them to me when I wasn't even awake yet. When I was away from home, she always reminded me. Now, my Yankee kids would not know what to do on New Year's morning if the peas were not all cooked and ready as the first thing they tasted.
Maybe one kitty pic per day? Wherever you are in your place, you have a one-in-four chance of getting one.
Posted by: Dana at December 20, 2006 09:34 PM
I tried something like that my senior year of college, when I decided to make my own yearbook. I didn't quite get a picture per day, partly because I was still using film, but I ended up with enough good pictures for a two-volume yearbook thing. I say go for it, but don't worry about missing a few days here and there.
Posted by: naomi at December 20, 2006 10:12 PM
Laurie, I was raised Irish Catholic in New Orleans. You cannot get more superstitious than that.
These are the superstitions that if I mess up just one little bit, I end up screwed for the rest of the year. Maybe I am certifiably ready to go to Jackson, but after much life experience to reinforce the truthiness of this, I have vowed to do all of these every year.
Conditions in your home at midnight on New Year's Eve will prevail throughout the coming year.
SO:
You must have:
_a loaf of bread on the table
_a shiny new penny in your pocket (or as much cash as you like, but you MUST include one shiny copper penny)
_a clean and tidy home (for me this means floors mopped and swept, laundry and dishes done, clean bathroom, things put away, etc. -- it does not mean dust the baseboards behind the couch. Just put things in order.
_a glass of spirits to cheer your heart and toast the new year. When you toast the New Year IN, tell the old year GOODBYE.
_a kiss at midnight for love in the coming year (even if it's your cat you kiss)
_a green bayberry candle, lighted just before midnight and allowed to burn itself out (for safety, I always place it in the bathtub or sink when I turn in for bed) This brings luck and money
__just before midnight, sweep the old year out the front door, and shake it off your broom
__a log in the hearth (leave it unlit if it's warm where you are). If you have no hearth, make a small fire outdoors in the barbeque pit or other safe location.
On New Year's Day: Black-eyed peas (luck) and a side dish of cabbage (money). No arguing. No rushing.
Call family and old friends on the phone, have guests over informally, so your home is filled with cheer.
Light candles for the following -- a red candle for love, a white one for hope, and a green one for luck and money
A loaf of bread must stay on the table ALL DAY and a penny in your pocket all day as well.
You must "earn a penny" so you will be employed in the year. This means giving someone a penny to do some small task like taking out the trash, and they give you a penny in return for some small task.
A yummy food treat for each member of the family -- pets of course.
Wear something new -- doesn't have to be a whole outfit, it can be, uh, panties.
DO IT ALL.
Happy Holidays,
Dez

post a pic-a-day on your BLOG....
I'm just sayin is all....

I'm doing Project 365. I mostly love it, but sometimes it does kind of feel like an obligation, which leads to lots of last minute pictures of me at my desk, my shoes, my rabbits.... I do find that my picture taking has improved, though. And hey! I even figured out a few more things about my camera in my quest for a good photo.
I keep mine in an album on my Flickr account. They're public. I like to think of it as a photo diary, and love the idea mentioned in your comments to make a photo book at the end of the year. The only reason I personally wouldn't do Polaroid is that the film is so gd expensive, I'd be hesitant to just let the shutter fly. It would look pretty freaking cool, though. Also, I suck at organizing, and I just know that I'd let the labelling fall by the wayside and forget which picture goes where. :)
Posted by: Marlena at December 21, 2006 12:35 AM
this sounds like a great resolution. i'd say, sign up for it and share your pictures, but if you happen to let a few days slip here and there, no worries. it's supposed to be something you do for fun, not a pain in the tooshie :) i vote for polaroid!

I like the picture-a-day idea. Speaking from past experience, I'm not very good at sticking to this type of thing (anything that needs to be done regularly) but I think I'm going to give it a try. As to whether or not to share, I'll probably share at least some of them with family but I like the thought that it may be something just for me.

Laurie -
Thanks for the 365 link! I'm totally going to do it! I just got a new camera and used it a ton on vacation, but the weather here in Chicago is slightly uninspiring in the winter. :cp So that will be a great motivator!
Posted by: April at December 21, 2006 07:22 AM
For me, I think it would be an impressive undertaking. I'm sure there would be a lot of dog pictures... In theory I think I could do it, but the actual sticking to it, I'm quite poor at.

Kiss the Roys is my favorite pic of 2006!
Posted by: Melissa at December 21, 2006 07:48 AM
I think I would agonize over what to take a picture of on any given day and it would end up taking over my life. What kind of photo would you take on a really bad day? Or waht about when you're sick and don't feel like getting out of bed? Is that something you really want to remember? Still, it would make a really neat collage at the end of the year if you can really stick to it.
Posted by: KellyFaith at December 21, 2006 08:16 AM
I just loved Dez's New Years Eve and day superstitions.
You're supposed to be able to tell your future for the new year by breaking an egg into a clear glass and leaving it in a cupboard all day, then at midnight, holding a lit candle to the glass. You're supposed to be able to see your future in the raw egg. Never worked for me.
Also, at the stroke of midnight, if you eat twelve grapes and make a wish on each one, they're supposed to come true.
Posted by: Jeannie at December 21, 2006 08:59 AM
One problem with Dez's superstitions... burning a red candle for love. A nice psychic lady told me never to burn red candles, because they attract negative energy. Maybe that's why so many of us attract a-holes!
Posted by: Jeannie at December 21, 2006 09:02 AM
I say DO IT, but only if you post every photo. What fun is it for US to just hear you talk about it? We want to see you twisting your face in 365 ways to express your changing your daily emotion.
Posted by: Neil at December 21, 2006 09:55 AM
In candle magick, red is a color traditional used to attract lust and sexual types of "love", whereas pink is used more for romantic love. Use whatever you're looking for at the moment ; )
I have a feeling that 2007 is going to be a very momentous year for me, full of very big life-changing events that I've been waiting for a long, long time. You gave me a wonderful idea and I thank you for it. I'm going to document the year with photographs each day, and at the end create a lovely book on my Mac.
Posted by: Caroline at December 21, 2006 09:56 AM
I'm going to try it. Have no idea if I'll post or not, but it will force me to learn to use my camera and carry it with me so I have something other than cat pictures! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Love the picture of you and Roy, perfect. Got to love some cat lovin'!

You should use one of those poloroid iZone cameras. When my nephew was 3 or 4 I gave him one for his birthday. He took some of the coolest photos with it. They had that great sticky film so he was able to make a collage lick-i-ty split. And the photos are 1 inch by 1.5 so they don't take up much room.
Fantastic idea.

Boy.. as much as I love to take pictures.. and I do.. I think this kind of commitment would end up just really frustating me and making me feel bad.. I have been trying to keep journals.. you know the actual hand written kind for each of my kids and one for myself.. and well.. I cant even find the time to do that very well.. so as much as I love the idea and applaud those who can do this project I sadly am not one of those people

Laurie, I would definately do it girl. and at the end, when it's all over, use a program like pro show gold, set it to music, and watch away on your DVD, it would be a fun way to document your year, and just to see if you can go through with it. take the challenge!

I like the idea of taking a photo every day for a year. There is something on YouTube that I saw a while back, where a woman took a snapshot of herself each day for an entire year. It's interesting to see someone else's life in pictures. I think a snapshot that captures an event, a feeling, or a thought that the person experienced on that day can tell alot about that person. It's a creative and interesting way of looking into someone's life. I hope you decide to do it, Laurie. I love to see all the photos of you, your cats, your friends, etc., but it would also be fun to see what other interesting things you might choose to photograph as your daily entry for such a project.

I started to do something similar last year with a group of people worldwide, called Wheel of the Year. There were only about 15 of us, and I think only 4 finished! Not me, though. It got to be too time consuming posting the current picture, and the month before's as well. We took 12 shots, each of a different scene on the first of the month and even though I only did it for 4 months, I was amazed at the subtle and blatant differences I could see.
I like this idea, but could I stay with it? I'll have to think about it!

In 2007, I am having lapband surgery. In another year, I will look like a different person, the person I used to be before packing on all these pounds. Since I am certain of the weight loss, it would be meaningful to take my own picture all year. 365 pictures of myself seems a bit much, but once a week would tell a story. Thanks for the great idea.
