Seeing Spots! Knitting Spots, that is.

Thanks ya'll for sharing your knitting spots with me, I had a good ol' time checking out everyone's sofas and decor, I love it!

This took me FOREVER AND THREE DAYS to create this gallery, and I think I finally finished some time in the wee small hours between cabernet and tumpover, so please be kind to me if there are a bunch of mistakes. I hope you enjoy -- I'll post my spot tomorrow(ish) and also try to correct some of the 657.5 omissions and mistakes I probably made. Also, you will notice that my comments became very cheesy and lame midway through. I'm sorry, I was losing IQ points with the horrible internet code stuff. Also, please be patient as there are eleventeen hundred thumbnails and no matter how small I made them, they just load slow. Whoops! That's why I'm just blathering away right here in the text part. Blather, blather. So ya'll will be occupied during the excruciating waiting period. Hi! What are ya'll making for dinner? I'm having microwave popcorn... again. Yup. Chitchat.

So, click on any thumbnail to start the gallery. There is some script in there that made my browser freak out but it's not a virus, I promise, it's just the code that makes the forward and next buttons work on the pictures. Magic! Gnomey!

Thanks for showing me your knitting spots ... this is a Nosy McButtinsky's dream come true!

FIRST COMMENT?!?!?!?!

Posted by: mivox at October 5, 2006 04:03 PM

Ok, 'course I had to go look through the thumbnails to find my couch in among all the other couches ... and now I'm going to go snoop through everyone else's homes. WooHOO!

But ... First comment! Yow!

Posted by: mivox at October 5, 2006 04:05 PM

Woooohooooo! What an undertaking! And you DID it! Good job! (I WANT that bright red futon or chaise lounge someone sent a photo of! COOOOOL!) It's such fun seeing where everyone else creates! I'm like you - love to see into everyone's lives! LOL! Thanks for an awesome put-together of all the knitting places! I'm waiting to see what you come up with next!

Posted by: Kai at October 5, 2006 04:07 PM

Seriously, my head hurts from the internet part of this, luckily my Nosy Gene won out and I conquered the dumb code junk. I think. If ya'll are seeing this, consider it conquered :)

Look at all those knitting spots!!

Posted by: laurie at October 5, 2006 04:09 PM

WOW, what a good job you did!
This was great, I didn't send mine in but will if you do it again. It was great fun to see "knitting spots" !

Loved it!

Posted by: ana at October 5, 2006 04:12 PM

Wow, you worked hard for this post. I've been waiting with bated breath since "go have some wine and check back" or something similar 15 minutes or so ago ;)

Posted by: Suzanne at October 5, 2006 04:13 PM

Yes, it is rather embarrassing to have to post a bunch of "Crap this didn't work either!" and "I am dumb! Bear with me!" posts LOL. But so, so worth it :) Look at all those cool knitting spots!

I want to move in with all ya'll.

Posted by: laurie at October 5, 2006 04:24 PM

I see lots of cats and dogs. But my daughter's real mad at me for sending in that particular picture. she just reminded me it was taken when she was sick.

Posted by: Deborah at October 5, 2006 04:29 PM

Wow, that is amazing, YOU are amazing.
I'm with whoever said it made their brain hurt!
Thanks

Posted by: rohankitter at October 5, 2006 04:29 PM

Oh. My. God. And we all just adore you. I hope you are feeling the love from all over the world, sweetie.

Posted by: Liz R at October 5, 2006 04:30 PM

Dag-nab-it! I KNEW I was forgetting to do something this week. It was to send you a pic of my fave knitting spot. Ah well.... I'm lovin' looking at everyone else's. Will need to come back to see the rest as I only made it halfway through and my work day is finished (yep, that would be me ... browsing your site .. at work. (shhhh, don't tell!!!!)) :)

Posted by: Kat at October 5, 2006 04:34 PM

Whoa! That's quite some gallery. No wonder it took you so long to put it together.

Posted by: Dagny at October 5, 2006 04:39 PM

Kat, I'll do another one in a few... er. Months? hee. Maybe this time I will be faster at it. Liz I do feel the love, this was so much fun! I loved being invited in, it was like I got to "know" ya'll in your house! I can't thank everyone enough!

Posted by: laurie at October 5, 2006 04:40 PM

Holy Cow! there are a lot of pictures here! Way to go Aunt Purl lovers! Can't wait to nose my nosey way into your life too. Thanks Laurie for making my voyeurism socially acceptable!

Posted by: Becky at October 5, 2006 04:45 PM

Awesome gallery -- makes me want to fix up my knitting spot- uh, that would be the entire flat..

So, microwave popcorn is one of my favorite dinner entrees - that said, I recently purchased a collection of popcorn toppings... All super low points for those who have sworn allegiance to the cult (WW). So now there are TONS of options over here at casa de bitch when it comes to dinner -- there is 94% fat free micro-popcorn with nacho cheeses, OR white cheddar,OR cajun (awful), OR barbque, OR faux butter, OR caramel (hideous). I haven't even begun to mix the fabu flavors...

I also play with the presentation by alternating the stainless steel mixing bowl with the badly handpainted wedding gift reject bowl I designed a billion years ago.

Life is good here in the gourmet ghetto.

Posted by: bitchwhoblogs at October 5, 2006 05:04 PM

Laurie (and the rest of y'all), I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see that most everyone else lives in a state of barely contained chaos as well. It's validating, somehow, to know that I'm not the only one! Thanks for sharing, everybody. The internets are a wonderful thing.

Posted by: Lynn in Tucson at October 5, 2006 05:07 PM

Laurie,

Alas, *I* am not magic. The cat? The cat is magic. She doesn't shed individual hairs. More like a clumps of really downy soft stuff in the spring and fall that are really easy to just pick up and toss as you walk by.

We realized this was a magic cat who sheds magic clumps and thus we dubbed her Princess Kitty.

Loved the gallery! Well done you!

Posted by: countess_shell at October 5, 2006 05:10 PM

How much fun is this! Thanks everybody for sharing and Laurie for putting us all together. GREAT JOB!

Posted by: psychomom at October 5, 2006 05:36 PM

AW man! I forgot to send my photo in, so I've posted it on my blog for any other lookie loos!

You are amazing to have posted all those pictures with the fancy arrows n such. I'm tres impressed.

XO

Posted by: marissa at October 5, 2006 05:59 PM

I lied. I didn't post the photo on my blog. Couldn't find the one I took. Nevermind. XO anyway.

Posted by: marissa at October 5, 2006 05:59 PM

Hooboy, that was fun! The voyeur is sated.

Posted by: Peeve at October 5, 2006 06:28 PM

All the cute kitty and puppy pictures did my no-pets-allowed-apartment-having heart good--thanks!

(pssst....is it just me, or was I the only one drankin'? :-p)

Posted by: Amanda at October 5, 2006 06:31 PM

What nice spots. My spot is just plain scary.

Posted by: Andree at October 5, 2006 06:48 PM

How about a "what does your toilet look like" photo gallery next time?

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! I just grossed myself out.

I need to go to bed now. Sweet dreams, y'all!!

Posted by: Liz R at October 5, 2006 07:11 PM

Wheeee, what fun to see everyone else's spot -- and also to see that I'm not the only one whose knitting is "assisted" by assorted cats and dogs. Thanks for collecting and posting those, CAP!

Posted by: Lani at October 5, 2006 07:13 PM

Yay! I saw my knitting spot! Thanks for the kind words on the large belly and the knitting spot. You made my day :D If I just knew how to do it, I would have sent you some fresh okra from my father-in-law's garden so you could make yourself some good ol' southern food!

Posted by: Bea Apple at October 5, 2006 07:18 PM

VERY AWESOME! I am so impressed with your conquest! I'm not sure I would have had the huevos to take on such a project. Thanks for putting it all together. Funny that none of my kitties or daughters made it into the pictures. How unusual!

Posted by: Trixie at October 5, 2006 07:20 PM

Laurie, Bairu thanks you for your sympathy and wonders if he can come to live at your house . . . since he gets very little sympathy here (we mostly laugh at his funnel-headed self)
Everybody else, Thank you for sharing bits of yourself. I may just turn all your pics into a screen saver to prove that I'm normal!

Posted by: RobynR at October 5, 2006 07:25 PM

Oh Laurie, this is so wonderful! I love seeing everyone's spots, and their pets. And their stashes. Some people have houses that look like they could be in magazines. I stand in awe of them. Some people have houses that aren't any more organized than mine. I love them from the bottom of my heart. I love the Welsh Terrier. I love Larry. I love all the cats and especially Jeffrey. I love the pictures of projects. I love the people who know how to put little tags on their pictures......
Thank you for 1) having such a brilliant idea and 2) doing all the hard gnome work.
I've got to go look at more pictures, then start in on some blogs.

Posted by: Cindy G at October 5, 2006 07:53 PM

DAmn! How fun was that??? I had to click on every single picture to see where you people knit, and what your homes looked like! I was disappointed when I finished!
Great job, Laurie! Thanks for giving the voyeurs in us a fix!

Posted by: Kim at October 5, 2006 08:00 PM

Glad I'm not the only clutterbug knitter in the entire world!

Love the pictures and the set-up. Great job on the whole photo show thing Laurie.

Posted by: Dorothy B at October 5, 2006 08:24 PM

Great job, Laurie. You are amazing!

I did not send a picture because I didn't want a)child services showing up at my door or b)the aspca. Not sure I could justify this much clutter and filth.

Thanks for the show!

Posted by: lorinda at October 5, 2006 08:24 PM

I am most comforted to see that I'm not the only one who lives amidst clutter. I envy those folks who are clutter-free, but I most relate to the your other clutter-bug readers. :-)

Posted by: Mary in Virginia at October 5, 2006 08:31 PM

ACK! I forgot to send mine in....
I'll participate next time.

Posted by: Vanessa at October 5, 2006 09:22 PM

Love the pics... you know I see so much similarity in all of these pictures much to my relief...1. yarn clutter (knitting notions, wips, books, random needles) 2. animals who like to cuddle while knitting
3.A colorful taste in furniture, paint, and pillows....

Are you sure us knitters weren't cut from the same cloth?

Posted by: IdahoHeidi at October 5, 2006 10:34 PM

Excellent post Laurie!!! You did an amazing and organized job of this major project! I'm very impressed with your computer skills. LOVE looking at everyone's knitting spots. Too many cats...achoooo! I know, I know...y'all are major cat lovers. Again, achooooo!

Posted by: Ellen Bloom at October 5, 2006 11:21 PM

Laurie - What a magnificent job on a brilliant idea; this was a whole whack of fun! (And I'm still only halfway through looking. Must finish looking before starting the big job, that of visiting blogs.) Thanks for all your hard work, everyone for sending in pix, and hours of fun. And I'm with Amanda and external clutter, too. ;) Very glad to see I'm not the only one who knits at the computer, LOL. Btw - freaked out and jealous re knitting *while* doing something? I'm equally so over keeping track of 4 cats, inspiring folks to send in pix, getting up such a huge gallery, even adding *comments*! Mutual toasts, eh? Slainte! (Ok, where'd I hide the Irish Cream for the hot cocoa?)

Posted by: MonicaPDX at October 6, 2006 02:59 AM

Wow! Thanks for all your work in setting up the gallery. I just spent a very fun hour looking at all the knitting spots!

Posted by: Wendy at October 6, 2006 04:25 AM

Loved all the pics! I am thinking of learning how to knit. Just a wonder.... Do ya'll get a free cat when you buy yarn?

Posted by: riley at October 6, 2006 04:48 AM

Great job Laurie! What room are we doing next?? :0)

Posted by: Colleen at October 6, 2006 05:19 AM

Oh, I am impressed beyond words.
And envious of the stash. My yarn-collection is far too small.
And I love seeing all the helpful cats and dogs ... and the iguanas! (Iguanas!)
You are very much welcome to bring all your woolly knits to Copenhagen.
Have wine.

arrggh i missed it! well i would have taken a picture of my toilet. the only place I DON'T knit in my house.

Posted by: maryse at October 6, 2006 05:36 AM

thank you laurie, and everyone that participated, thank you for feeding the voyeur in me as well!
i will have to come back and visit, so i can read all the comments on the photos when i have more time ... i have to get ready for work now! whaaa!

Posted by: gray la gran at October 6, 2006 05:42 AM

Wow! Voyeur-licious! Who would've expected iguanas, knitting, and mini-dogs all in the same room!!! This was great, Laurie; an overdose of vicarious comfort. Cindy G, the Welsh Terrier says thanks and loves you back.

Posted by: Dana at October 6, 2006 06:05 AM

Wow my house looks messy! What fun to see my knitting corner in all it's glory on the internet!! I think Idahoheidi is right, we are all cut from the same cloth ! :)

Posted by: robinv at October 6, 2006 06:10 AM

Yes, free cats with every yarn purchase. Unless you buy from me in my future store. Then you get your choice of cat or child.

Love the photos. I never got around to taking mine because, OMG, I'm appalled at the mess in my apartment at the moment. When they poured the foundation of our new house, all daily maintenance of this apartment stopped. I can't get motivated to clean! I sit and knit or crochet and ignore the nastiness.

Loving the ideas people have in their spaces. I have dedicated yarn storage being built into the new place, and dedicated crafting spots. I see some decorating in y'all's photos that I'm going to adapt. This was a great project, Laurie!

Posted by: Crystal R. R. Edwards at October 6, 2006 06:22 AM

That was great. I think its funny that you put my yorkie poo (Baxter) right after a cat named Baxter, especially since I didn't id him in the note.

but I'm easily amused.

I'm about 25% through my magic scarf - do you want me to send you a picture when its done? I am sending it to my sister in law as a present and I'm all "is it pretty enough? will she like it. maybe I should just keep it and buy her something."

who knew knitting gifting was so anxiety ridden?

great post. Hugs to all the other knitters!

Posted by: suzi at October 6, 2006 06:29 AM

I should send a pic of my crocheting spot. : )

Posted by: Ang at October 6, 2006 06:42 AM

Well, I added that signature line to my emails after a particularly gruesome week =) Glad you enjoyed it so much, it continues to make me smile.

And real friends not only help you hide the bodies, they bring wine to drink afterwards.

Not that I know from experience, I'm just sayin'...

Posted by: roggey at October 6, 2006 07:44 AM

Suddenly I feel much much better about my messy house. Thanks for the Friday voyeurism laurie...if Vogue is professional knitting porn, does that make this amateur knitting porn?

I'm just asking.

Posted by: stitch-dom at October 6, 2006 08:08 AM

That was fun!
If you ever make it to the north, do it in the summer; I'll save you a chair & we can share the wine getting abilities of Mr. Motorcycle.

Like they say, "a friend will bail you out of jail; a really great friend will be in the cell with you saying "Damn! that was fun!"

Laurie,
I read your blog every day...am a newish knitter. After viewing the knit-spot photos I know what I am missing - my own spot. Also I'm getting it that I also don't need to defend the stash - it'll all get knit...sooner or later...with just the right needles I have yet to buy...in a pattern to be chosen out of about a dozen...and meanwhile I love to look at it and touch it :)
Thank you
Barbara

Posted by: cecilia at October 6, 2006 10:12 AM

Gnomey! (I'm going to have to start using that...)

And I forgot to send in my own knitting (crocheting too) spot. But, it pretty much looks like a couch in a corner, with a cat ready to pounce on the yarn (if crocheting) or the needle ends (if knitting). Somehow, I always end up with a few wet bits of yarn running through my fingers...

Posted by: Tami at October 6, 2006 10:19 AM

I'm embarrassed to say I couldn't take a pic last night of my own knitting spot -- the sofa -- because I was too tired to get my butt off it long enough to straighten up the pillowy/blankety mess and take a pic. Now that the weather has turned cold (read: 70 degrees) all the snuggling is happening with the cats and it was hard to move away from the goodness :)

I am so glad it's Friday!!!

Posted by: laurie at October 6, 2006 10:30 AM

Am I the only one who has serious organizational envy of Ellen's stash? I bet she actually knows most of what she has in there - cool!

This was fun - thanks for playing.

Posted by: MBT at October 6, 2006 10:44 AM

When I saw Ellen's stash in person, I literally had to kneel in is greatness and presence... plus, her studio (home of the stash) is an amazing space. She's quite an artist, and she paints there, too.

Ellen is sort of magical.

Posted by: laurie at October 6, 2006 10:50 AM

A house! A house! Someone has their very own
"little knitting house!" I want my very own
little knitting house, too.

Well, now that I've got that out of the
way -- some commonalities I've noted after
perusing every single photo and accompany-
ing blurb: we like animals (the cat
contingency clearly wins in this category); we
like Ott lights; we like to put our feet up
when we knit; and our favorite knitting accessories seem to be laptops, tv remotes, wine and diet cokes. Sounds about right to me.

Have I mentioned that I now want my very own little knitting house?

Leslie, in Beautiful Bucks County, PA
where my knitting has taken over my little
house, but it is definitely not my very own
little knitting house.

Posted by: leslie at October 6, 2006 11:03 AM

What a wonderful project! That includes the idea, the instigator, and the participants! I know we keep telling you to write a book based on your blog, which really would be a lot of work. But this project, for which you've already done the work, would make a beautiful coffee table (photo) book any knitter would love to own. Or, failing that, a one-time or recurring feature in a knitting magazine. The sky's the limit! Please, please, please follow up on this idea. Purl's pals, do any of you have connections in the world of publishing? Of course, you'd probably have to go through a little legal mumbo-jumbo, getting permissions from the contributors, but I'm sure there would be more than enough of them to make publication worthwhile. Please share this with the world, and with your Healthy Kitty fund!

I meant to send a pic, but didn't get around to it! :(
You should do a Part II for us lazy slackers!

Posted by: Jeannie at October 6, 2006 11:41 AM

There are a large number of kitties and rocking chairs in this gallery. I wonder if that is some sort of pre-req to be a knitter. :P

Posted by: Lynne at October 6, 2006 12:24 PM

I will do a Part Two, for sure, sometime in... eh. December? LOL

Posted by: laurie at October 6, 2006 12:49 PM

I love the pictures! It's kinda weird how inspiring they are. I didn't send one because my knitting spot is a mess. I guess I shouldn't have worried about it. Creativity is a messy thing. Thanks for sharing everyone and Laurie, thanks for posting them!

Posted by: Pamela at October 6, 2006 12:51 PM

Whoa...I am completely blown away by the neatness I see here. I am inspired. I will organize, I will organize, I will...sit down on my couch and knit and think for a fleeting second of organization, then move on.

Posted by: Krista M at October 6, 2006 01:10 PM

Don't know about you all but I find something comforting in the fact that Dorothee in Munich has to fight off her bf interloper from her knitting spot because the light is best there. So far away yet so familiar...

The Earth is small and her knitters are my neighbors.

Posted by: SusanK at October 6, 2006 01:33 PM

What a fun tour of knitterly spaces that was! I'm so glad I joined in the fun. Since I sent my photo in, I've finished one sweater, finished the sleeves of another (which completes all the pieces of that one) and started a third.

So when are you doing a stash spot web gallery?

Thanks so much for all the work you put into this, and thanks, also, for stopping by the Shrinking Knitter once in a while ... the more the merrier!

Posted by: Debbi at October 6, 2006 01:42 PM

Posted by: BryAnn at October 6, 2006 06:56 PM

Wow! Great gallery!

First, I am very envious of some of these knit-spot-set-ups and wish my place was half as cool. Second, I have to say I'm amazed at the number of very tidy people there are out there. Third, so glad to see that there are lots of other people (like me) with stuff scattered around!

That was amazing. I'm sure it brought everyone closer together, seeing all the special knitting spots. Thanks for all of your hard work in putting this together. I'm sure you didn't expect such a response! Next time, hire a team of specialists to help.

How cool is this, looking into everyone's knitting spots? You rock, Miss Laurie!

Susie, off to not-knit today and wishing I were in my knitting house instead!

OMG seeing mine online made me realize what mess it is! LOL Must do some cleaning up I think. But then I'll get distracted and start even more projects!

Though I do not have a knitting spot it reminded me of my grandma that use to knit me everything!
We would show her 'store bought' sweaters and then she would make us all one! Hats, mittens, slippers, scarves, every sweater imaginable.. I still have them all -- I wish my girls would wear them....

Oh, I wish I had send in a picture now! My DH and I always argue about my knitting cack being all over the place--it's really not. It's mostly in my office/studio, and only a WIP or two are in the living room or bedroom.

Leslie in Texas, where UT is playing OU right now! and I am watching and knitting something that it will likely never be cold enough to wear.

Love the kitties and the nosing into other people's homes. Love it! Some of those girls make me feel better about the size of my wool stash! "See honey, this lady has WAY more wool than I do!" heehee!

My god, there's so many! And here I was feeling all guilty that I hadn't sent you mine and so you'd be weepy and bereft and stuff.

Well. That'll larn me.

I loved this! SO interesting! Let's us see into some real CAP fans lives. I'm not a knitter - yet - so I didn't send in a pic but I loved snooping into everyones little slice of home.

WOW! What a job you did, Auntie Purl! I am deeply amazed by how much so many of us have in common, particularly with regard to: felines, dogs, futons, clutter and comfort. I have always thought that there is a much higher percentage of pet parents amongst knitters than average -- in fact, a much higher percentage of multiple-pet parents. Your sampling helps confirm my suspicions. Life would be far too boring without plenty of knitting assistants.

I sent in my photos too late, but you can still snoop if you want to.

Great job,

Dez

Woo! I won the alphabet!! **does the top of list just because of her first name dance** It was totally rad to see everyone's knitting place. The day I get more readers in my blog I'm totally gonna do something just as awesome (or oppositely as lame: "What colour are your socks/footwear right now!?")Anyways, rock on with the coding and keep up the awesomeness.
