Crazy Aunt Knitting Spot

Whoops! I almost forgot to post my own little corner of stockinette in the round. Which, by the way, is what I do because I am so incapable of watching teevee while knitting something hard like cables or any item requiring counting. Also, I know this will come as a surprise, but sometimes there is wine involved which further decreases my knitting IQ (while, conversely, increasing my delusions of knitting grandeur. Also known as "I don't need no stinking pattern! I'll just make one on my own!")

Hee.

Notice all the knitting helpers I have! They are my backup fiber, in case I run out of cat-hair-covered yarn, I can just go straight for the cat hair. Kind of like fun fur, only cheaper.

A few Knitting Spot updates, too, that I left out of the gallery:

Ruth sent me links to her pictures on flickr which try as I might I could not figure out how to save (read: steal) for this here website but they're very cool and they have fancy roll-over notes:
Ruth's knitting Spot and Ruth's other knitting spot

And Samantha wrote to me a few weeks ago and said, "I didn't even know that my favorite cafe had a MySpace page until I Googled it to find images for you. Scroll down and you'll see the beautiful garden area (that's in the back) and the cool, artsy area inside with the leather couches and rotating art displays. The best drink on the menu? The venti soy (hot or iced!) Mexican Mocha -- mmm, cinnamon. Hugs to you & the Insane Cat Posse."

Well, Samantha, I wasn't able to post the pictures because one of the cats, I will not say WHICH ONE, was maybe hogging the MySpace and so I couldn't borrow (read: steal) the pics like I wanted. Cats these days. What can you do?

And I do thank you folks who have been sending in notes here and there with knitting spots... I will put together a new gallery in a few months, once my brain has recovered from the first one and I conveniently forget about the evil internet coding and so on and think, "Oh, that was so much fun! Let's do pictures again!"

Luckily, my brain is small that way, and forgets things once enough time has passed. For example, I have no idea what I had for dinner last night. I might have had something really healthy and good for me and full of...uh. Nutrients? Or maybe it was a bag of microwave popcorn, half a chocolate bar and seven-eighths of a bottle of pinot.

Your guess is as good as mine!

Oh, I'm sure it was the healthy dinner, with nutrients. Just like mine! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Glad I'm not the only one who puts water glasses out for our feline overlords, who could drink out of the perfectly good bowl washed and filled just like the glass on the table, but choose not to.

Posted by: Amanda at October 12, 2006 11:15 AM

Last night I had 8 totino's pizza rolls and water for dinner. I'm sure whatever you had was better than that!

Thanks for the pics. Love seeing the kitties in "action."

Posted by: Mary in Boston at October 12, 2006 11:19 AM

My dinner Monday consisted entirely of side dishes from KFC.

I particularly like the way you can get all 4 cats on the sofa at the same time. Impressive.

Posted by: Beth at October 12, 2006 11:25 AM

my brain-drain feline can not, Not, drink from a glass without tipping it over. Thus, we have no spoiled-in-that-way kitties.

Do you put your feet up on the lovely-ly finished-already coffee table? I totally would. Really gives more lap room for beasties.........

Posted by: Suzie at October 12, 2006 11:27 AM

My cats drink out of a glass, too! They refuse all other forms of water delivery, including a $35 fountain I bought them. Then I read online that cats can see more easily when a glass is full than a bowl, so that is probably why they prefer it. Makes for some tricky situations when I leave a glass of MY water sitting out, though.

Last night's dinner involved some carbolic-acid chili I'm trying hard to forget.

Posted by: Jen at October 12, 2006 11:27 AM

Popcorn, chocolate and wine . . . sounds like a balanced meal to me! :)

Posted by: melly at October 12, 2006 11:29 AM

I'm liking the ghost-y image of you. Is that commentary on your current lack of melanin?

Also, your knitting space looks conspicuously neat and tidy. . .

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at October 12, 2006 11:31 AM

Yes, Ms. Monkey, I cleaned house like a maniac over the weekend and THEN took a picture. Of course!!

Posted by: laurie at October 12, 2006 11:36 AM

Wow! What a cool knitting spot. I love the graphics mixed with the warm colors. What kind of guitar? Hmmm.....we can work on that.

Dinner was curried carrot soup. I felt like actually cooking a real meal for the family. Usually it's just chicken and salad. Oh, and Pinot Grigio!

Posted by: Trixie at October 12, 2006 11:39 AM

Yay! Other cats so spoiled that they get their own glasses, on the coffee table. (or kitchen counter as the case may be. heh!) I love to spoil them. Just LOVE IT!

But with all that, can someone tell me why they still drink out of the toilet when I'm not watching? Leaving nice little wet foot prints on the seat, for yours truly to find - usually in the middle of the night. When it's dark and I'm sleepy (or sleep walking).

Posted by: Amy at October 12, 2006 11:51 AM

Dontcha just LOVE how Roy, Bob and the Beautiful Frankie are all schmooshed together, but HRH Sobakowa almost has her own pillow? I'm waiting for her to POUNCE unexpectedly on the other three for hogging the rest of the couch!!

HEE! Furry kisses to all! Chocolate and wine to wonderful Laurie!

Posted by: mctwin at October 12, 2006 12:03 PM

I am so impressed by the Cat Posse Formation. My two feline roomies haven't sat next to eachother since I could hold them both in the same hand. They don't fight, really, they just prefer their space. I think there's a place on their schedule, like between 10 and 10:15pm, where they both share the couch with me (one at my ankles, one on my chest) but it doesn't last for long.

Posted by: Jenn at October 12, 2006 12:06 PM

Wouldn't that be "una sobakowa"?

My cats would not be caught dead all snuggled together like that. Any two of them will eat out of the two-bowl dish, though, except Fluffy, aka Garbo, who will have nothing to do with anyone.

I did mean to send you pix of mine, really, only I haven't finished cleaning yet.

Posted by: Lucia at October 12, 2006 12:27 PM

Girl! If you're going to drink 7/8 of a bottle of Pinot, you may as well just finish it off, that's what I always say!

Posted by: chris at October 12, 2006 12:31 PM

Those cats of yours are so talented, lining up like that for the family photo on the couch.

Posted by: Sarah at October 12, 2006 12:36 PM

Sometimes houseguests forget that any glass is fair game for my furry ones, until they hear the slurping.

Posted by: Marilyn at October 12, 2006 12:36 PM

Hey there,

I'm new to blogger. I found your blog through a link which was through another link...you know how it works. I love it here! I will be back again.

As long as you left an 1/8th in the bottom of the bottle.

Posted by: cursingmama at October 12, 2006 12:45 PM

Thank you for the awesome post on knitting spots - that post must have taken a lot of work, but wow! it was really cool AND inspiring to see where others love to snuggle with their yarn n' sticks.

Posted by: cagey at October 12, 2006 12:51 PM

My crazy spoiled kitty will not, WILLNOT drink water out of his water bowl. He goes straight for any glass around. He'll even drink out of the sink, bathtub (he licks the tub too)(freak), even a bucket of dirty scrub water. I have to watch him every second! But he's great. I wouldn't trade him.

Posted by: elizabeth at October 12, 2006 12:52 PM

Office Space --- hee hee hee hee

Posted by: trixie at October 12, 2006 12:58 PM

My cat prefers his water from the sink faucet. No matter where I am in the apartment, if there isn't chicken or a lap involved, then he's probably sitting by the bathroom crying for me to turn the sink on. This was a real turn off for my ex boyfriend who apparently preferred to brush his teeth sans cat. Silly boy!

Posted by: e. at October 12, 2006 01:00 PM

Heehee. My friend's cat would only ever drink from a glass of water on her bedside table.

Nice knitting spot - and I can see why you put the fabric up on the wall, it looks really good!

Posted by: Peeve at October 12, 2006 01:03 PM

CCP, you truly are a CCL. please embrace it.

Posted by: smokeyJoe at October 12, 2006 01:06 PM

ooooh, I luv me that pink knitting bag!

Posted by: Kat at October 12, 2006 01:07 PM

My three furballs have a $70 electric Drinkwell pet fountain that holds 12 cups of fresh-tasting, filtered water, thank you much. They LOVE it. But one cat has claimed the couch - and my fiance's lap when he sits there, and she will swat at the other two if they try to get on the couch and snuggle with him.

Yes, they are incredibly spoiled. The couch cat even has my fiance trained to share any and all chicken dinners with her.

Posted by: OtherLisa at October 12, 2006 01:15 PM

Office Space is the best movie EVER.

Posted by: Jules at October 12, 2006 01:24 PM

Hello again, all you Laurie-loving knitters and non-knitters like me...

Laurie, your workspace is quite enchanting. I've had a piece of cool retro fabric that I've wanted to hang for a while, but I'm a guy. It sounds too much like a "craft" for a guy.

Like the dinner menu. Last night, mine consisted of a piece of leftover chicken breast, two Hershey kisses, popcorn and a bottle of pre-mixed White Russian. Mmmm.

Oh yeah, and Office Space is a great movie. Unless you actually work in that kind of environment, then it gets a bit too real. Love it!

Keep up the great work, Laurie.
Love ya!

Move those cats over! I'm coming over to knit with you. Heh. Wish I could ... CA might as well be the moon, it's so far away from the Middle of Nowhere!

Posted by: Debbi at October 12, 2006 01:38 PM

Ok its SO nice to see that other cats (yours and others who posted) drink from a glass!!! I thought mine were just strange. I have one that drinks from the kids' pool as well, but that's another story.....

Posted by: Lynn at October 12, 2006 01:51 PM

Oh my, I love your readers! How many of us had popcorn and booze for dinner last night?

Posted by: Sarah at October 12, 2006 02:00 PM

I thought I was the only one who had water glasses for the cats. Clearly they have trained us well.

Oh, and I'll be happy to give you a gee-tar lesson next time I'm in L.A.

Posted by: Mary in Virginia at October 12, 2006 02:02 PM

My spoiled cats have a water glass on my coffee table too!! (and one on the other bedside table, and one in the bathroom, and one...)

Posted by: Carolyn at October 12, 2006 02:32 PM

Yup, I drank dinner last night while watching part 1 of the Project Runway Finale. I hemmed some shirts so I could feel like I was going to Fashion week too.
Love your decor and the kitties. I will help you refinish that table if you link me up to Soba's myspace.

Oooooooooooooooooooooh!!! Mr. Steve is back!!!!

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at October 12, 2006 03:25 PM

if you still would like more, I'll send mine in soon... I'm still recovering from a sinus infection and so don't feel like 1) getting off the couch to take a picture or 2) cleaning things up to take a picture at the moment... (and besides at the moment its been more of a sit here and be sick and watch Project Runway spot than a knitting spot...)

Posted by: Aria at October 12, 2006 03:52 PM

Awwwwwwwwwwww...

They're so cute. We're supposed to remember what dinner was last night? o.0

Posted by: gray la gran at October 12, 2006 04:48 PM

I love that I am not the only one who puts a glass of water on the table for her cats.

Your spot looks very comfy and well warmed by cats.

Posted by: Dorothy B at October 12, 2006 05:29 PM

Life looks good chez CAP. I am really impressed with how the cats lined up on cue, or did you have to lie in wait to catch them like that? Hey, you can add wildlife photographer to your resume!

Posted by: Sue F. at October 12, 2006 07:06 PM

My knitting always gets dog hairs woven into it.
That fur gets everywhere !

Posted by: Carson at October 12, 2006 09:52 PM

Hey Purl - is your sofa also mid-century? Its very cool! Goes well with your also very cool coffee table.

I know you usually drink wine, but I seem to remember that you also quaff beer from time to time?? There are two reallly good microbrews I keep meaning to tell you about. The first is Victory Brewing from Pennsylvania. Just about everything they make is stellar. I usually go for their Pils and their IPA. Both are very hoppy. The other brewery is out of Cleveland - its called Great Lakes. Their Porter is the best I have ever had. It tastes like dark chocolate and coffee. I don't know if either brewery distributes out to Sunny CA, but if they do, you might want to check them out.

Hope your granny is continuing to recover well!

Coding HTML is like being in labor...once the pain is over...the mind & body forget. Then you do it all over again and suddenly remember your vow to NEVER, EVER do this again. Hee!

Speedbump (of Roadtrip fame) will drink from a glass - sort of. She sticks her foot in whatever liquid is in there and THEN licks her foot. Lather, rinse, repeat. Luckily, Redneck Boyfriend likes cats and has his own herd, so he's used to this behavior - well, not the same exactly, but feline mooching.

Speedbump is a traitor and will immediately stop what she is doing to get into Redneck Boyfriend's lap and roll ecstatically, all four feet in the air, completely shedding her dignity along with eleventy-nine pounds of black fur.

Posted by: Roadchick at October 13, 2006 06:45 AM

How do you get all 4 of the kitties to hang out on the sofa with you at the same time??? How do you do that?!!!!

Posted by: Nancy at October 13, 2006 06:54 AM

I'm amazed that Soba allowed Frankie to sit that close. I thought Roy was the only one who could get that close to Soba.

Posted by: Natasha at October 13, 2006 07:12 AM

for the love of all furballs, can someone tell me the url to soba's myspace?

Posted by: ed at October 13, 2006 07:50 AM

Laurie,

I had to laugh at the guitar you don't know how to play as I, too, have one that I have no clue what to do with, but yet I can't seem to part with it. I keep thinking one day I will learn!

I'm betting on the Pinot.

Cheetos and coffee are good for breakfast, just in case you feel like expanding your culinary horizons.

Not that I'd know or anything.

Posted by: Rabbitch at October 13, 2006 10:19 AM

Lol! I just checked out Soba's myspace! hehe. I love that you got all four kitties on the couch and I love that couch, too. Nice color and it looks comfy. I have a guitar also but don't know how to play! My dad and brother play but I just recently got mine free from a coworker. It's white and pretty but it stands in the back of my closet only coming out when the 8-year old stepdaughter remembers that it's there and proceeds to play like fingers on a chalkboard. Ouch!

My cat likes the water in glasses wherever he finds them. I keep a cup of water on the bathroom counter for him but I drink from bottled water myself otherwise it would be fair game for him.

Posted by: Leeny at October 13, 2006 10:25 AM

Last night I had 2 pints of Guiness for dinner. Hey, that's pretty close to a meal.

And I second the vote for Victory beer. I used to hang out at their brewery/bar back in my PA days.

My knitting spot has been overtaken by Halloween costume mayhem.

Posted by: Kelly at October 13, 2006 10:33 AM

Fascinating!! I had *heard* the sobakowa had a blog, but ya'll know I'm too old and un-hip for the MySpace crowd. Also, I call it "the my space" so you know, I'm what? 84 now?

That cat. Always a surprise ;)
