The knitting spot
Now, I realize that maybe one of the greatest technological inventions of all time, the internets, is being used for only the highest of highbrow of pursuits (i.e. porn) (and shoe shopping, love you zappos.com!!) but it can also be a little window into someone else's life.
A little while ago Neil asked his readers to send in pictures of their beds. For a voyeur like me, this was brilliant! I love seeing folks' style in decorating and in the furniture they choose or even just the different bed coverings, it's funny how much personality you can see in such a thing.
So, I was wondering if ya'll would want to send me (Nosy McButtinsky) a digital picture of your knitting spot? The place you most often knit, or maybe most love to knit, with maybe a little description or general geographic location and I will post mine, too. OH. In your email, send me a link to your homepage if you have one!
[Edited to add; This is now over ... sorry you missed it!]
p.s. If you could put the words "knitting spot" in the title of your email, then they can go in a special no-spaminator folder. So I will not lose you to the vast labyrinthine abyss that is my email.
Thanks,
From the lame-ass who still has not set up a gmail account. whoops.

This would first involve stopping knitting and cleaning the knitting spot first.
Sent you a gmail invite. :)

Alas, I am away from camera and knitting spot, but I'll hook you up with a picture. I've often dreamed about what my ideal knitting place would be, so my ACTUAL, favorite knitting spot exists only in my head. For this project, however, I'll be happy to send you a picture of what is, for lack of any other spot, my couch.

I love to show people my stuff, and what a bigger "stuff" to flaunt than my cozy knitting corner? I am showing major restraint in not using "k" for cozy and corner.

Good to see Roy, how is he?
Posted by: Lindy at September 25, 2006 09:28 AM
A picture of my knitting spot, huh? Alright, I can manage that. You are going to be doing a heck of a lot of e-mail/blog reading, you know.

As a frequent peeker into lighted windows on my nighly running circuit around my neighborhood, I highly respect your voyeuristic streak. I'm sesnding a pic of my knitting spot tonight!
Hugs to Skinny Roy.

Roy is doing... okay. Thanks for asking about him :)
I'm excited to see ya'lls knitting corners!
Posted by: laurie at September 25, 2006 09:41 AM
I'll get a pic to you with my current favorite knitting machine.
Posted by: Carmen in NC at September 25, 2006 09:41 AM
Roy has only one sleeping spot? My boys seem to have a good 5 or 6 special sleeping spots each and then there are those various sleeping spots that they just fall into:
"Oh my, that trip from the litter box to the sleeping spot is to far, I think I'll just lay down here in the middle of the steps and take a nap"
Favorite (not most frequent) knitting spot is on it's way.
Posted by: cursingmama at September 25, 2006 09:48 AM
I'll be sending it this evening! I had to sneak a peak at the beds but I was left with one question....I have to wonder how many of those beds are generally made on a daily basis ;)
Hugs to Roy!

Sorry I can't sent a picture, my digital camera is in the shop. The place I most commonly knit is on the couch in the livingroom. From there I can watch t.v. while claiming to be doing something useful and I'm also close to my dog in case he wants to get a drink or just move somewhere (he has degenerative myelopathy and can't walk without support or his wheelchair). In good weather, we go out on to the front porch where he can watch squirrels, bunnies and birds go by and I can knit or spin. But my all time favorite place to knit is in the lobby of the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland. I can sit in a big overstuffed chair, order drinks from the lounge and laugh at tourists. Heaven!

I don't have a specific knitting spot, and i do the largest part of my knitting in class and at work. so i can't really send a picture.
Posted by: string at September 25, 2006 10:02 AM
Come to my blog www.ssslambo.blogspot.com to see my spot. I don't knit, but lots of "thinking" happens in the Chair of Death... not to mention reading, TV, napping, and catting. The pics are in the "For Those Who Want a Peek" entry (beginning of Sept). It's a colorful experience to say the least. Oh, and there is plenty of catporn too!
Posted by: Samantha at September 25, 2006 10:03 AM
Today is Cleaning Day, but after that I'll probably take a picture (or two, as I have two knitting spots, depending on my mood and if I'm watching TiVo or a DVD - virtually all of my knitting is TV knitting).
Posted by: Tina at September 25, 2006 10:05 AM
I can see why Roy has choosen that for his sleeping spot. Looks oh so cozy. I bet he could learn to knit.
This is a neat idea!
Posted by: Kristy at September 25, 2006 10:11 AM
Aw, I don't knit and can't participate! Really makes you wonder how I got into reading knitting blogs. And yes, I read ALL THE PATTERNS even though I have NO IDEA what they mean!!
Can't wait to get a sneak peak into people's houses, though. I have this misguided view that other people's houses are always clean and completely decorated and don't have kitchens that smell like cat pee (well, that last part's probably true), so it's nice to be proven wrong sometimes!
Posted by: Leah at September 25, 2006 10:12 AM
Love Roy!

My spot. The Kitchen where I knit, watch TV, drink, read, cross stitch, sew, fold cloths, make lists, cook, eat, homework, etc... If the computer was in there I'd never leave my spot and I feel displaced when the boys take my spot so sometimes they get kicked out. I'll get a picture to you when I get home.
Posted by: psychomom at September 25, 2006 10:21 AM
Cool! I'll pack the digital camera and stop by my favorite knitting spot on the way back from class. This is a fun idea, Laurie - I wanna see where other people knit, too! :)
Posted by: Samantha at September 25, 2006 10:22 AM
Thank heaven you didn't ask for a pic of my bed, which leads a permanently cluttered and unmade existence (except for about 20 minutes a week right after the cleaning lady has passed through). I'm not showing you one, either, even though I knit there quite a bit. The car is also out. I can probably get a strategically angled one of the sofa.

Oh, what a great idea for a post!
My knitting spot in/on my bed, leaning against the wall.
I sent you a couple pics that were previously posted on my little blog wherein my pets are infiltrating my knitting nest.
(in case anyone else feels like lurking my pics)

I think I've said this before but...I love Roy. He's so beautiful.
Posted by: Nancy at September 25, 2006 10:50 AM
Oh, I wish I had seen this post before I went home for lunch. Of course, all you would have seen are sleeping Yorkies and grannies squares, as I'm now obsessed with making the perfect 8" X 8" square for the cause.
Posted by: Kim in CT at September 25, 2006 11:07 AM
Fun idea! I'll send you a pic of my spot soon :)
Posted by: ck at September 25, 2006 11:10 AM
I sent you mine, along with a couple of gratuitous and totally unsolicited pictures of my kitties just because. This is truly a fun idea.
Posted by: Lani at September 25, 2006 11:42 AM
Not quite related to knitting spots or adorable cats, but just saw this on yarn.com and thought you should know - Noro Transitions on overstock sale. Thought of Crazy Aunt Purl when I saw this; don't thank me for ruining your budget ;)
Posted by: karenology at September 25, 2006 11:52 AM
Oh man. Your post just made me realize I left my digital camera over at my ex-bf's house, I just broke up with him this morning! I sure hope I can get that back. I love your blog, Laurie!
Posted by: Coral at September 25, 2006 11:55 AM
Oh this is fun! I'll send pics tonight. Do I need to clean up my knitting corner? Isn't that like faulty advertising or something?
Posted by: Tracy at September 25, 2006 11:57 AM
I hope the knitting spot pictures can be posted somewhere....probably lots of clever ideas out there that we all can share.
Posted by: Chris at September 25, 2006 12:18 PM
As it happens, my spot is not completely covered in CRAP at the moment! How rare...
Posted by: Shelly at September 25, 2006 12:18 PM
I'm jealous of all the people with the real beds. I've got a mattress on box spring on floor - no frame! Because, damnit, they're really expensive.
I will send you my knitting spot. It's the world's cheapest couch.
Sigh. Someday, I want to have a real home, like the grown-ups have.
Posted by: kathleen at September 25, 2006 12:52 PM
Favorite knitting spot, huh? I'll have to think about that- I grab my knitting time as I can get it, so I tend to be all over.
This is my first visit, but not the last- I have to come back to explore your world, like any good blog voyeur.

Great idea! I shall send my photo soon!

Posted by: Robin at September 25, 2006 01:59 PM
knitting spot...hmmm, right brained a.d.d girl. Expect a wonderful mess of yarn, magazines, reading glasses, knitting needles, and multiple half done projects. I am making the husband chief photographer tonight, mess and all!
love the picture of Roy. How old is he? or do you know?
Posted by: robinv at September 25, 2006 02:09 PM
More than happy to procrastinate on my work a little longer, thanks! Picture sent, as well as posted on my blog, with descriptive commentary, cleaning first be damned.
Posted by: Bridget at September 25, 2006 02:27 PM
Is Roy looking skinny so I will want to feed him bacon? 'Cause it's working. Heck, I wanna feed that cat a whole hog.
Posted by: Anne at September 25, 2006 02:33 PM
How do you keep the kits from jumping out the open window and strolling down to crackhead bob's for a toot? Or is there a screen I can't see there?
Posted by: Marilyn at September 25, 2006 03:11 PM
Love you, Roy, joy boy. Laurie, do you want a picture of the spot where people knit, or the view the knitter has from the spot from which s/he knits? It's an important distinction. I love my spot because of what I see from it and how I feel there. The way it looks when I'm working there doesn't matter. Yes, Neil's ideas are great (I had that same question about how many people really made their beds just to take the pictures.) And I noticed unlike everyone else NEIL didn't volunteer to knit a square for the Grandma Purl project. You'd think he'd have a little time with Sophia out of town and all. So in his honor (and in honor of his dad and Rosh Hoshana) I will knit an extra square as the Neil woulda-coulda-shoulda square.
Posted by: Dana at September 25, 2006 03:23 PM
Neil rocks! (Do you know Ish and I met him when we were in LA last spring?) :)
Posted by: k at September 25, 2006 03:53 PM
Hi Roy! And hi Laurie! I, too, don't yet have Gmail -- I resist it, for some reason.
Knitting spot, huh? I 'spose I'll have to clean it up a bit before the photograph. You just may regret asking your readers to send you all this email!
Posted by: Mary in Virginia at September 25, 2006 04:58 PM
OK, I sent you mine. Although it could have worked equally well for Neil's collection!
Posted by: BethC at September 25, 2006 05:52 PM
Dana, I have no idea how to knit, but I did contribute to the fund to buy some yarn (or burritos for hungry knitters at work making squares for Grandma Purl). I would like to learn knitting, but I'm waiting for one of you to write a book titled "Teaching Knitting to Hopeless Men."
On that thought, what exactly happens if a husband/boyfriend/family member tries to sit in a knitter's "knitting spot?" Does that mean trouble?
Posted by: Neil at September 25, 2006 06:07 PM
My favorite knitting spot? The patio of a certain Starbucks in Pasadena (CA). My house is entirely too disjointed to allow for any knitting.
Posted by: Marie at September 25, 2006 06:36 PM
I'd love to send you a photo of my knitting spot, but I knit while I commute and NYers get a bit tetchy when disturbed on the subway during morning rush hour. The other day a (clearly crazy) lady actually yelled at me for "waving those things" (I assume she meant knitting needles, but who could be sure?) "in her face." I can only imagine the uproar if I tried to take a photo or, god forbid, asked someone else to take a photo with me and my knitting in it. :)
Posted by: Linda at September 25, 2006 06:47 PM
Sending you my Spot. Cool idea!
Posted by: cagey at September 25, 2006 06:55 PM
Ooo this sounds super fun. I'll have to wait for daylight, lest the Orange Velour Hand-Me-Down Seventies Couch look even uglier without natural lighting!
Posted by: Liz at September 25, 2006 07:12 PM
Crap. Now I have to break out the camera. lol
Posted by: Dagny at September 25, 2006 07:17 PM
Totally on it's way! I included all the necessary things...cat, beer, yarn, and forehead!
Posted by: Krista M at September 25, 2006 07:59 PM
ROFLMAO! Ok, you got it - on its way as soon as I finish the nightly Reading of the Knitting Blogs. And it's gonna be from my vantage point as I sit there. No *way* am I letting anyone see the true, entire mess! Sorry, not even you, Laurie. [eg] (Clean? What cleaning? People do that??) Just call it a...uh, candid. Yeah. That'll work. ::snerk:: You'll be able to extrapolate the rest of the place quite easily, I think. (God, I can't believe I'm doing this...)

favorite spot??? big comfy chair in the corner, cat on lap trying to 'help' with the yarn, dog eyeballing the yarn balls.
most frequent spots?? waiting at kid games, lessons, practices, meetings, etc.
Posted by: arizelda at September 25, 2006 09:41 PM
Don't worry, Laurie. He doesn't look so much skinnier since the last time I tortured him with medicine. He was sniffly then, even. He has a bit of time to snuggle with you. He's the prettiest cat ever.
Posted by: jen at September 25, 2006 11:31 PM
I second Leah here! I don't knit :( but I can send you a picture of my computer, where I read the patterns and wonder how you people come up with hats, bags and socks(!!)out of a thread.

And about gmail, by the way, I switched to it this summer and have loved it, until this morning: the computer won't connect to Google! It tries and tries and goes nowhere. I am now convinced I have fantastic messages waiting for me, just because I can't get to them. I want my mail...
Posted by: ccr in MA at September 26, 2006 05:58 AM
Although, to be fair, this may be a problem with the systems at work, and nothing to do with Google. I can connect to some of my usual haunts--like this one!--and not others. But I am a mail addict, and I accept no excuses.

My sister (non-knitter but I'm working on that) just emailed me this story, and I thought you'd appreciate!

I am so embarrassed. I sent you a picture last night, and noticed this morning that I didn't resize the picure, so it's ginormous! I was going to resize it and send it again, but didn't want to clog up your email. I can post it to Flickr when I get home and comment here with a link, though. Sorry!
Posted by: Marlena at September 26, 2006 10:06 AM
Little slow on the uptake, but I just sent you my knitting spot photo. Looking forward to seeing others' places! Also, thanks for linking to Neil's bed thing -- it was so great!
