September 10, 2006

Oooh, let's talk about the weather.

It's happy-happy shiny smiley land here in the Valley, because it's morning and it's a lovely Sunday and OH MY GOD IT IS NOT HOT. Seriously. It's all people have talked about. I was at the 7-11 this morning for coffee, and then the gas station and then the grocery because I am somewhat certifiably insane and get up at 4:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings and WAIT for things to open (well, of course the 7-11 is open, but it's too weird to arrive there before 6 a.m. unless you're on a beer run for a party that is going VERY well, know what I mean?) and HOLY CRAP is this turning into one long sentence, but suffice it to say every place I visited this morning people have remarked upon how AWESOME the weather is because we are not being baked in the scorching armpit of hell.

Hi ya'll! I had a lot of coffee!

And really, the weather is so beautiful this morning. I have ancient windows on my house that you crank open with this handle and I am so technologically challenged that anything with moving parts is game for breakage, it's kind of a gift, really, I mean I am SO TALENTED in this way, and yet even the window in the office cranked open today without complaint which probably means I should go buy a lottery ticket right now. Because I am feeling LUCKY, darlin.

And I do thank ya'll for the kind words and wishes for my family! If I win the lottery I'm so taking all ya'll out for ribs and beer. And, well, probably truth be told we'll have to stop by the 7-11, too. Ya'll know.

Ooh, I'm first! I agree, it is so nice not to be living in an inferno. These are the days we live for in the Valley, Laurie.

A trip to sev, I'm in! Some nachos and a big gulp for me.

Posted by: Dorothy B at September 10, 2006 09:55 AM

Hi, I'm going totally off topic here. Just a warning. My Geology prof looks so much like you I am tempted to pull out my laptop in class and bring up a picture of you for comparison. But I think she would think I was neurotic or something. Ah well... enjoy the weather!

Posted by: RishaMoonshadow at September 10, 2006 10:14 AM

I'm so glad about the weather!!! There's nothing better than a beautiful day off in September!!!!

How are you feeling this morning? If you want to laugh take a look at those vacation photos I sent you. Me in a bathing suit......there's nothing better for your self esteem!! At least you can be thankful that you don't look like me!!

BTW, I spotted my first Christmas tree sighting in the local nursery near my house. Say it ain't so!!! ;o)

Posted by: Liz R at September 10, 2006 10:17 AM

Welcome home, Laurie.

Posted by: madeleine at September 10, 2006 10:34 AM

Ribs and beer? I'll be cheap for the beer part, at least.
You've got the right idea; celebrate the small stuff. Yay! You got the windows open! And there's air that's worth letting in! Here's to a beautiful day!

Posted by: k at September 10, 2006 10:59 AM

I wish for sunlight here. The last few days the marine layer has been rather thick.

I've got my fingers crossed about the lottery because I am so down for some ribs and beer. Just one question though. Will there be squishy white bread?

Posted by: Dagny at September 10, 2006 11:05 AM

Well, I tell ya, it's down right cold here today. I'm into a fleece sweater and considering putting on wool socks, since my feet feel like ice cubes. Good grief. Enjoy your day!

Posted by: Barbara from Nova Scotia at September 10, 2006 11:06 AM

Don't you just love September in California? Even up here in Northern California it's just gorgeous outside. Just enough of the fall tinge, but not enough to freeze your poor toes.

Enjoy your day!

(and Hooray Beer!)

The weather is actually quite bearable here today. What a nice surprise for a Sunday morning, huh? Glad to hear you had a chance to visit all your favorite stores this morning. ;)

Posted by: Kristy at September 10, 2006 11:26 AM

I am usually just a lurker but I want to be in on the ribs and beer if you win! I'll cross my fingers.....No really, I have really been enjoying your blog for the last few months so thought I should at least say hi. So hi!:-)

Posted by: Michelle at September 10, 2006 11:33 AM

It's still real hot here in Atlanta, but I'm looking forward to that first day here when all people can talk about is how gorgeous the weather is. Won't be long now.... You enjoy it while you have it!

Posted by: Girl in Atlanta at September 10, 2006 11:54 AM

Yeah, Laurie - fall is in the air here in West Michigan. It is not gonna hit 70 out here today. It is sweater weather - knitters weather! Red wine weather! Woo Hoo! Cheers!

Posted by: Kat at September 10, 2006 12:10 PM

I'll take you up on the beer. But there is only one true place to have ribs... nude in the tub. I mean they are soo messy and there is never enough napkins.. and the sauce is everywhere.. and no I have not tried this yet. Its only theory.

I posted late to the last post. If you win the lottery, can I still come? ;)

Enjoy your great weather, Laurie. I do love fall. I just wish that winter and snow were not so close at hand.

Posted by: Kim at September 10, 2006 01:29 PM

Laurie,
All of life is suffering. Surfing is suffering. And not to know that is even more suffering. But now you have done what you could, faced your suffering head on. So life with its suffering is sweet. I know, not to worry. Ribs are good even with suffering.

Love, Vicki

Posted by: Vicki Woodyard at September 10, 2006 01:51 PM

Ooooh, ribs and beer!! Goodness, I am easily distracted!

Posted by: Peeve at September 10, 2006 02:50 PM

I googled "cat licking bathtub" because my 7 month old bengal kitten has taken to licking the bathtub first thing in the morning, and then several limes a day. Now he's licking the side of the freezer, so I'm getting curious if this is 'normal' behaviour.

I end up at some sexy 30 something newly divorced woman with 4 cats blog site.

Ain't life grand!

Posted by: vern at September 10, 2006 04:01 PM

Mmm, ribs and beer. Oh, yeah. I'll go with key-lime pie, too!

Posted by: demondoll at September 10, 2006 05:02 PM

Hallelujah on the cooler weather. Sacramento is no longer super-meltingly hot. It's actually quite livable now, just warm enough to justify cooking outdoors, but not so cruelly toasty that I feel compelled to scamper inside like a freaked-out rodent after feeling that first blast of hot air.

Hope your grandma's doing OK. :)

Posted by: Samantha at September 10, 2006 05:29 PM

It's not cooler here. sniff.... But I'm going to Asheville next month!!! It is cool there! I can feel coolness and fantasize about moving!

Posted by: Catherine at September 10, 2006 05:46 PM

South Texas is somewhat less stifling, but it's not fall here yet. Of course, we have like 3 days of fall, then what passes for winter starts........

Posted by: janna at September 10, 2006 05:59 PM

Really nice here....go look at the pics on my site for beautiful mountain shots and funny b-day shots.

Glad you are home! Ribs and beer, I'll come along, too! Missed you.

Posted by: Trixie at September 10, 2006 06:13 PM

I love you. I also love ribs. And I LOOOOOOVE Beer.

So, I think I'll come out. We'll have ribs and beer and key lime pie.

Your grandma and all the other folks at the hospital are in my thoughts - what a fabulous woman she must be!

Posted by: Annie at September 10, 2006 06:22 PM

Hooray for 60 degree mornings (over here anyway.) I actually wore LONG pj pants this a.m. Whoo hoo fall!

Still thinking good thoughts for your family, Laurie. Hugs to you.

Dial back on the coffee, Auntie. ;^)

Isn't is nice that it's finally cool enough to think about wearing shoes again? Or am I the only one?

Can I get a pepsi instead of beer?

Yeah, having a loved one in a nursing home or convalescent hospital long-term is tough to deal with. My mom's been in one 3 years. Just remember "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" - Don't Panic! Sometimes it's not actually panic, but more of a panic-attack sort of thing.

That's the best thing about weekends, everyone can keep their own schedule. I woke up at 10 and will probably stay up until 1 tonight. Oh and I'll bring brownies for after ribs, cuz brownies are AWESOME with beer.

OMG was the weather lovely today. Daughter had an early soccer game so we had to be in Valencia by 8:00 and it was glorious. Needed a jacket, just for a minute. Other daughter was in Oxnard early, hubby said it was great to not sweat...

Posted by: Darci at September 10, 2006 07:22 PM

Sleep has not recently been my friend. I'm up at the same time you are, maybe if I start going out of the house at that time it would inspire me to sleep the next day? Or not.

Posted by: Pants at September 10, 2006 10:11 PM

Isn't it wonderful? I'm wearing real jammies again tonight - with pantlegs & everything, because it is actually cool enough to wear clothing again. Hallelujah! Glad you made it back home to enjoy the cooler weather.

Posted by: tinker at September 10, 2006 11:28 PM

Welcome home, Laurie, and continued hugs and apple-crunch-pie love to you and your family.

Here in the Boston area we have a forecast high today of 63 degrees (that's 17 Celsius -- I am trying with some difficulty to learn to think in Celsius too), with much the same tomorrow. This is a lovely early-fall temperature, but I hate to think about January.

Posted by: Lucia at September 11, 2006 03:46 AM

I love getting up early on the weekends. I feel like I have a jump start on the whole world.

Posted by: Kate at September 11, 2006 04:52 AM

I'm jealous of all of y'all with the cooler temps. I'll second Girl In Atlanta - it was hot as heck here this weekend. I went to an outdoor antique market yesterday and if it was actually possible to sweat your arse off, I would have not a thing to sit on today. Atlanta doesn't seem to cool off until Halloween.

Posted by: Bevvy at September 11, 2006 06:37 AM

I'm glad to see you're feeling better and that the heat in the Valley has finally broken.

I hope Grandma is doing better too.

Just don't put on a watch.

Posted by: Danielle at September 11, 2006 08:42 AM

Sounds like you had a fabulously beautiful Sunday, CAP. It's nice and cool over here on the East Coast, too. I'm not sure that I'm ready to say goodbye to summer yet but I am certainly glad that the pumpkin spice lattes have reappeared at Starbucks! Mmmm...

Posted by: susanna at September 11, 2006 09:07 AM

Hey Purl Goddess - I wasn't around a computer all weekend so I finally have a chance to write you.

You realize you have just racked up about 9,000 karmic gold stars for all you have done for your granny, your mom, and Mr Hakim.

Also, you asked what to bring the next time you go? Photos of the cats, or better yet, if the hospital allows, amaybe even a cat itself. Does any of your herd travel well? A lot of hospitals have the "Pets on Wheels" program, where people bring their pets in for the residents. Maybe you could bring the Mysterious Knitted Cat Project you have referred to in previous posts. How about that fabulous Texas Sheet Cake? Also, maybe you could print out the Francisco Chronicles from your blog, and read it aloud?

Most of all though, just your company makes so much difference. Having been through something similar with my family, I can attest to that.

I hope Roy is feeling better.

I'm glad the weather is better. Dante's Inferno might be interesting to read aobut, but none of us want to live there! :-)

Posted by: marcia at September 11, 2006 09:27 AM

I think you've sent your heat over here! We're very warm in the UK now!

Posted by: mrspao at September 11, 2006 09:37 AM

The weather here has been downright pleasant, no? Huzzah!

Also, I'd like to send good thoughts to you and your family...if it's not too late, that is!

Posted by: Catherine at September 11, 2006 03:19 PM

Ooh, ribs and beer! Well, allergic to pork so it's chicken and beer for me; hooray! God, I haven't had BBQ since I left Florida last April...

I'm a long-time lurker who lives in Sherman Oaks. Help a bloggy knitty friend find home style food? :)
