Perspiration is the key to success.

tempofhell.jpg
There's Johnny Mountain!

I plan to stay indoors and drink iced tea until it's a proper hour to switch to an adult beverage and ... will someone remind me why I love the valley? Anyone?

Ummm, well we know it's not the summer temps NOR the men...so I have no clue. The Pacific NW is beautiful now! (highs in the low to mid 80s today)

Posted by: shannon at July 15, 2006 10:52 AM

I feel ya here in Oklahoma. I'm the idiot that decided that we needed to move into a new house AND that I needed to do all of the yard work. However today and tomorrow we will be inside watching movies courtesy BBuster. Stay cool!

Posted by: RachelH at July 15, 2006 11:01 AM

Time to come to NH......

Posted by: Bonney at July 15, 2006 11:22 AM

And I thought 90s in New England were bad.

Posted by: Lucia at July 15, 2006 11:22 AM

sort of looks like the Texas temps! We are hanging out at the pool, doing mostly nothing. I've already switched and am on my way to a nice little buzz!

Posted by: texcilla at July 15, 2006 11:25 AM

Here in the high desert just north of you it will be about the same. I'm not a hot weather gal...don't know why we live here!

Posted by: Janet at July 15, 2006 11:32 AM

I will trade ya...I will take the dry hot valley heat and you can take the 105 with 85% humidity we have coming here in Jersey????

Can someone tell me why I left Cali for the East???

Posted by: ibeejd at July 15, 2006 11:37 AM

I'm starting to feel better about the balmy 97 degrees here today.

Posted by: Catherine at July 15, 2006 11:38 AM

112? Holy crap! You can come visit CT if you want. It's only 88 here and we have cute Russian dudes painting the condo today!

Posted by: Jenny at July 15, 2006 11:39 AM

I think the global warming scare is now sinking in & I may have to take it seriously! It seems like it's at least 5-10 degrees warmer here this summer. Lucky for me it's only 102 today in Southern California.

Don't forget...it's never to early to switch to an adult beverage because... it's 5 o'clock somewhere.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 15, 2006 11:48 AM

Now sugah, doan you know that us southun gulls doan perspi-ah? we glisten!

Posted by: Tonja at July 15, 2006 11:54 AM

Yikes! It's only supposed to get up to 97 here. I still plan to not wear pants all weekend.

And the Valley is good because you have many 7-11s, full of cold beverages and ice and trashy magazines. What else do you need when it's this hot out?

Posted by: Gwen at July 15, 2006 11:54 AM

Also, you are more than welcome to come camp out over here, but Paddington would like you to bring a cat or two if you do.

Posted by: Gwen at July 15, 2006 11:56 AM

Because of the 7-11s and the ability to go barefoot year-round? Yeah, I got nothing. *L*

Suddenly, I feel better about 97F for today.

Posted by: Cookie at July 15, 2006 12:00 PM

It's 80 in Santa Barbara today. Come on up!

Posted by: Leslie at July 15, 2006 12:08 PM

I so hope that's without humidity!

Posted by: Christine at July 15, 2006 12:13 PM

And here I was complaining about it being 96 here in Iowa.

I have no clue how y'all survive the above 100 weather. We are supposed to keep in the mid 90s all week and this chicky will be in the house as much as possible.

Posted by: Becky at July 15, 2006 12:15 PM

Woof. And I was whining about our projected high of 96 today....

Posted by: Samantha at July 15, 2006 12:17 PM

Anonymous beat me to it, just want to remind you that it is 5 o'clock somewhere, so time to switch to that adult beverage.

Posted by: Elizabeth at July 15, 2006 12:20 PM

congratulations on posting about the only thing that could make me feel better about chicago's 95+ temps with four hundred milllllion percent humidity this weekend. now on to the adult beverages!

Posted by: sabrina at July 15, 2006 12:24 PM

C.A.P. That whole LA thing is actually just a built up desert. It may look like a nice place, but it is just a desert. I got 75 way up here in the SF Bay Area. SOOOOOOOOooooo much nicer than a desert. Have fun.

Posted by: James at July 15, 2006 12:25 PM

Good Grief! But do you have the horrid humidity we have to go along with our hot weather like here in NH? I'd take a dry 102 over a steamy 90 any day of the week and twice on Sunday's.

What IS a proper time to switch to an adult beverage??? (eyes the clock)

Posted by: Beth at July 15, 2006 12:28 PM

Yuck! 102 is like living IN a fever. I feel your pain. Hope you get to enjoy a few cold libations of your choice. :)

Posted by: Rachel at July 15, 2006 12:29 PM

I'm feeling your pain to some extent. The bulk of the CattyAbode living space is the 3rd floor of an uninsulated Vermit farmhouse. Cute. Cozy. Stifling. Buying an air conditioner is a sign of weakness here on the West Coast of New England and I can't leave the fans plugged in while I'm out of the house since the furry horde tends to knock them over while chasing each other in the heat. Ayep, they have the brightness of small appliance bulbs. But there may be some brief relief - I can see a thunderstorm forming on the other side of the Lake. So it's a white wine spritzer (or 3) and "Capote" for me today.

Posted by: Dusa at July 15, 2006 12:31 PM

About the same here in hell. I mean Arizona. Lemonade is ready, movies are rented. I'm not leaving the house until Sunday.

I HATE summer.

Posted by: Heather at July 15, 2006 12:43 PM

look at your e-mail for cooling pictures of glaciers and scenic Alaska! Then we'll talk. ;-)

Posted by: Trixie at July 15, 2006 01:07 PM

And here I was complaining in Texas about 102- 112, that is just unreal.

Posted by: Jennifer at July 15, 2006 01:18 PM

OMFG!! But I LOVE Johnny Mountain!!

Keep cool, don't go out, hug Roy.

Posted by: Inky at July 15, 2006 01:19 PM

Oh, Lord! My fiancé just observed (neutrally, it must be emphasized) that I had been, well, complaining a lot about the heat today. But it's only in the 90s in the Boston area ("only" being relative here, of course).

I feel for you.

Mint juleps are a nice drink to enjoy right in front of an air conditioner, I find.

Posted by: Ellen at July 15, 2006 01:19 PM

A hunnert and TWELVE??? Sugah, park yorself in front of the AC and have several drinks!! It's 105 here in SC according to one bank today. Ugh..not going back out till Monday.

Posted by: Judy at July 15, 2006 01:31 PM

I am about a mile west of you and I am hunkered down in the house as well...watching "Friends" seasons with the daughter and counting the minutes until I can change to a vodka tonic. I was thinking 5 pm was good.

Posted by: Darci at July 15, 2006 01:36 PM

Not to sound like a moron, but I'm a metric girl, and I can never remember how to convert fahrenheit into celcius...is it subtract 30 and divide by two...or something!! Anyway, it's about 28 celcius here, which is pretty effin' hot for my neck of the woods! Yay to air conditioning!

Posted by: Jeannie at July 15, 2006 01:42 PM

It's hot here too, plus I've been stuck in a house all day with my teenage son. I just asked him if he might want to spend the night at a friends or something. (he was SUPPOSED to go to his dads this weekend.... hmph, that didn't happen)

Pass the adult beverages my way... please!

Posted by: RishaMoonshadow at July 15, 2006 01:51 PM

eeew F that. Glad I live in New England, everytime you get too hot, rains a minute later.

Posted by: pam at July 15, 2006 02:08 PM

http://weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=wc:USAZ0034
check this out...we have an urgent weather message. Just 106 right now and we are off to The Home Depot to pick up some new air conditioning filters...got to make sure that is always in good working order.

Posted by: Janet at July 15, 2006 02:23 PM

oh...and they like to tease us with the "it might rain later" lies, lies, lies.

Posted by: Janet at July 15, 2006 02:25 PM

The song should say "It never rains in Maricopa County" instead of "It never rains in Southern California." I wish I was at the beach right now.

Posted by: Janet at July 15, 2006 02:26 PM

But at least the rest of the week is "cooler" than Saturday!

Posted by: Tish at July 15, 2006 02:43 PM

It's 98 degrees in Richmond and I'm watching Canadian football and knitting. I'm pretending that it's October.

Posted by: Liz R at July 15, 2006 03:11 PM

Ugh. Hot here in Indiana, too. Summah bummah.

Posted by: townie girl at July 15, 2006 03:18 PM

I'd be melting ...... melting ......

Posted by: Diane at July 15, 2006 03:29 PM

Yup. I'm working today, running around outside in Northridge, Woodland Hills and Pacoima and I just downed a 44-ounce frozen Coke from 7-11. For lunch.

I think "dinner" is going to be a frozen Strawberry daquiri.... I may have hit on a new weight-loss plan, the It's-too-frickin-hot-to-eat-any-solid-food diet.

Just a thought, re men: I know it sounds silly, but enjoy your unlimited "ME" time right now. Sooner or later, you're going to meet a real man, and you're going to be so busy doing wonderful things with him, you'll wonder where all your free time went. (My fiance reads your blog, says you're very pretty and a good writer, BTW, so there! He loves the cat pix, too.)

Also, I always heard that Southern women don't perspire, they "glow," am I right?

Posted by: Lisa at July 15, 2006 03:40 PM

HOLY MAN that is not right! But I grew up in Tidewater Virginia (not quite 112, but pretty daggone hot and humidity you could swim through), so I feel your pain. Definitely time to stay inside with an adult beverage or two.

Tell Johnny Mountain Goober sez hey. :)

Posted by: Julie at July 15, 2006 03:53 PM

I hear ya. Central valley here.... 106 degrees today, 110 degrees tomorrow.

Am now taking donations to pay for my electric bills this summer....

Posted by: Kim at July 15, 2006 03:59 PM

I can't remind you now, but I'll remind you the next time I'm trapped in the house by snow and ice and you're still walking around without a jacket. :-)

Posted by: DebR at July 15, 2006 05:08 PM

I believe it was Miss Lillian who said that just about anytime was OK for an adult beverage.

Posted by: Dagny at July 15, 2006 05:23 PM

Differentiating between 102 degrees and 104 degrees is asinine. It should just say "effin' hotter than a motha" all the way across those bars.

Posted by: Librarian Girl at July 15, 2006 05:27 PM

too...hot...in...san diego...w...t...f..
must be margarita time

Posted by: melissa at July 15, 2006 05:31 PM

I'm with LizR in Richmond--temps are expected to hover around 100 all week, PLUS we have some of the worst humidity anywhere, I think. (As of 8PM tonight: actual temp 87, but feels like 100--this according to weather.com)

If that weren't enough, our A/C picked TODAY, the day that is the start of the hottest stretch of weather we've seen all season, to break down on us. (what bad karma is catching up with me now??) So I have put aside my knitting & crocheting projects for a gigantic glass of icewater and a book, to be enjoyed under a ceiling fan, and I thank God that at least the overnight lows will help us keep the house somewhat livable until we can get the @*##@%&$# A/C fixed.

All that just to say: I'm feeling your pain! :-)

Posted by: Tara at July 15, 2006 05:40 PM

I literally haven't gone outside since Tuesday. Literally.

Posted by: ~drew emborsky~ at July 15, 2006 05:52 PM

Because you just do. How can you not love the valley?

It's got to be down to at least... 101 by now.

Urgh. (I heart central air.)

Posted by: Christina at July 15, 2006 06:03 PM

OMG! I was in Studio City today for lunch with my cousins. It was OK when I arrived...around 11:30-ish. When we walked outside after lunch at 1:30 it was like walking into an oven! I quickly drove back over the canyon to the Fairfax Delta. It wasn't much cooler, so I can't quite lord it over you. The Valley is hot, not haute. However, the Westside is hot too...but still haute!

Hugs!

Posted by: Ellen B. at July 15, 2006 06:07 PM

And a sunny 70 here in the great Northwest. From one souther girl to another, come on up, the iced tea is ready.

Posted by: Ginnie at July 15, 2006 07:26 PM

Gee, it's only 99 here. It's hideous. It never needs to get above 80 for me. I've been hiding in the air conditioning all afternoon. That's okay tomorrow is supposed to be 106. Funny most people think we are under snow here all year long. Right now, I wish!

Posted by: Kate at July 15, 2006 08:15 PM

Its soo hot here in the midwest too. At least you have an air conditioner. I think I may have to break down and buy on soon.
Love your post, you are a very witty writer and I hope one day I see your name on a best seller.

Posted by: pam at July 15, 2006 08:20 PM

$heesh!!! As if global warming is a figment of some loony scientists' imaginations. Here in CT it has rained enough to call in the Ark. Weeds cannot be caught up with (ooh, ended sentence with preposition). Send FRANCISCo! Does he whack weeds or only desirable shrubbery? Soon as it stopped raining and even with a/c, so humid everything in the environment--human/canine/furniture/rug--smells nasty. Photos curling, cardboard soggy. I loved living in Tucson and sat out on my porch with hot coffee at 7:00 a.m. when it was 108 degrees--"it's a dry heat."

Posted by: Dana at July 15, 2006 08:48 PM

Perhaps because it reminds you of sweating back in the great state of Texas? We're in the same boat as you...

Posted by: Deb at July 15, 2006 09:45 PM

112?? That's without heat index, I take it? Forget the fried egg, you could roast a turkey in that heat! For the record, 112 Farenheit is equal to 44.44 Celcius. And if you have 20% humidity or more, it can feel like over 115F. Crazy!

Posted by: Jaimie L at July 16, 2006 12:40 AM

Oh wow.. we hardly ever get anything above 86 in Holland :( Yes, please stay indoors and stay cool! If only the temp would drop a bit, then you could ogle hot men walking around in short pants, no shirt.. etc? ;)

Just thought I might as well start commenting since I've been stalking your blog :)

Posted by: ZhiWen at July 16, 2006 03:06 AM

Jeannie, the formula to convert temperature from Celsius (or Centigrade for us old-timers) to degrees Fahrenheit is:

deg C: multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32 to get degrees Fahrenheit. Ex: boiling temp of water: 100 deg C x 9=900, div by 5= 180, +32 -> 212 deg F

From Fahrenheit to Celsius/Centigrade: Deg F subtract 32, divide by 9, mult by 5

ex: 212 deg F (boiling temp water) - 32 = 180, div by 9 = 20, mult by 5 = 100 deg C for boiling temp water.

Human body temp: 98.6 deg F, 37 deg C

Freezing point of water: 32 deg F, 0 deg C. Isn't science fun!

Posted by: Sue F. at July 16, 2006 03:44 AM

Ohhhhhh!
Thanks, Sue!
So 112 would be something like...50? 50! Holy shit!
Screw the celebrities, I'd rather live right here in my boring-ass little town with our snowstorms and cool arctic breezes!

Posted by: Jeannie at July 16, 2006 04:08 AM

Yeah, I'll remember that perspiration thing when I'm wilting like an old piece of lettuce. I'm not looking forward to the heat that we're supposed to get here in NYC either. I think I might buy an a/c.

Posted by: john at July 16, 2006 04:44 AM

Hon, remember all the different time zones? It's ALWAYS time for an "adult beverage" somewhere in the world.

I was always told "Horses sweat, gentlemen perspire and ladies glow". Between you, me, and cyberspace, I glow like a pig! Stay cool and thank the genius who invented air-con and iced drinks.

Posted by: Jayne at July 16, 2006 07:43 AM

Posted by: Yikes at July 16, 2006 08:22 AM

Posted by: Mia at July 16, 2006 08:26 AM

I'm in the Conejo Valley and it is slightly cooler, but even the pool feels like a baby's bath! I don't know why we actually live here - it must be for the fires, coyotes, scorpions and tarantulas....ah, and the black widow spiders. Ugh. Send me home.

Posted by: Gretchen at July 16, 2006 08:47 AM

You could always live in San Francisco. :) Great California taste, but none of that nasty summa time heat. In fact, a couple of nights when it was so hot inland this week it was downright cold.

Posted by: smallerdemon at July 16, 2006 08:53 AM

Off topic, but Bridget Jones's got nothin' on you. Surely you've been approached about a book? Are you keeping secrets from us?

Here in Ioway we have to swim through the atmosphere to the pool....

Posted by: Mary at July 16, 2006 09:05 AM

Re. the west, they always say "but it's a dry heat" ... and you know, that is sorta true in Colorado. Or at least I keep telling myself that b/c I have no AC at home (in the mountains you don't need it, they say!).

It was 108 here in Louisiana. We've got that great swampy thing going on down here so the humidity is usually so high you don't even worry about looking at it, too depressing. When you walk outside you tend to just melt. LOL I can't believe some people live without air conditioning. Hope it gets better for you.

the weatherpeople on the news up in the Bay Area aren't as charismatic as him...or the other guy on ABC...Johnny Thunder or somethng like that? i think he has a southern accent...

Take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. I'm not leaving this house (unless I absolutely have to - which I will) until next Wednesday when it drops back into the high ninties here in Missouri. And, I would trade the humidity here for anything else. I mean anything. I don't know who pissed off these weather gods, but somebody make a sacrifice quick before more of us die.

Hey Kelpkim,

You mean "Dallas Raines" on ABC7?
Johnny Mountain switched over to CBS2 not too long ago...actually a lot of "old time" anchors/reporters from 7 moved to 2 ... it's kind of like watching the "Not Ready For Prime-Time Players" ... the best!
