Ode to an eyeliner

This is a picture I took from the bus window on Friday as I was leaving downtown and heading back to the Valley. I forgot about it until I hooked my camera up this morning, but you can see the double rainbow if you look real close, and also kind of squint.

rainbow.jpg

Yesterday I meant to clean my house and do laundry and so on and so forth. Instead, I spent almost an hour browsing the aisles of a big new CVS in the Valley, which is a pharmacy/convenience store/purveyor of lipgloss. The drugstore is my safe haven. My harbor in hellish times. My retail therapy, rows and rows of yummy items just waiting for me to discover on my lunch break or on the weekend when I mean to buy vitamins and antibac-wipes and instead end up with hair products, blemish creme and eyeshadow.

I love the aisles of glittery nail polish (Dries in thirty seconds! Guaranteed glamorous! Stays on for seven days!) and the neat little rows of eye shadow in their pots and tubs. The packaging genius of it all. The lipsticks, oh, the lipsticks. From gloss to stick to pencil to plumper, the selection never ends.

I don't actually wear a lot of makeup, but I own an embarrassingly large amount of it. I can't pass up a golden glitter pencil or a shimmery nail polish. There's a big-haired Texan Glamour Queen from 1984 living inside my nondescript skin. Some people have an inner child ... I sold mine on ebay and used the profits to buy a hairspray that has real gold glitter in it. I was born with an inner shopper, and she says: "Only $1.99? That's a bargain at any price! I'd be practically wasting money if I didn't buy that!"

Browsing the Clinique and Mac counters at Bloomingdale's isn't nearly as satisfying as spending an hour poking around at the local Rite Aid or Walgreens or CVS. That’s because you can’t feasibly leave Bloomies with a bag of goodies under $50, but you know at Walgreens you can buy long-lash mascara, a People magazine, two tubes of lip gloss and a Snickers bar and still have money left over for gas.

Have ya'll noticed that really tacky makeup is coming back in style? I have waited many agonizing years for blue shimmer eyeshadow to be back in vogue, and finally my time has come. Yesterday I bought a Wet'n'Wild eyeshadow stick in frosty denim blue and a little pot of Loreal baby blue shimmer cream. It sat in my bag for three hours while I fidgeted, anxious, needing to go home and play make-up.

(Interject long pause here to contemplate my pathetic feminine streak.)

At last, I freed myself of responsibilities, ran home and locked myself in the bathroom with my purchases. Twenty minutes later I looked like a Smurf had thrown up on my face.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

In the final analysis, I have concluded that perhaps we're not yet ready for blue eyeshadow to come back. But when it does, dammit, I'll be ready. Tubs and pots and sticks of ready.

I knew Soba had a sweet streak in her somewhere...

first! (I think)

Posted by: Lauren in Austin at March 20, 2006 10:02 AM

Anne, Soba can be sweet on Roy, but that's Frankie giving Roy a bath. Guess he missed a spot on the top of his head heheheheh

Posted by: laurie at March 20, 2006 10:02 AM

Curses! Foiled my Anne in my attempt at firstness....

Blue eyeshadow is okay (though I probably wouldn't wear it being as I'm brownish-greenish-eyed and, also, 41 freakin' years old), but please pray with me that the dark lipliner, pale lipcolor thing never returns. Cause that was just fugly.

Posted by: Lauren in Austin at March 20, 2006 10:05 AM

Oops. That should be "foiled BY Anne." My Anne makes no sense. I don't have an Anne.

Posted by: Lauren in Austin at March 20, 2006 10:07 AM

Laurie, I'm right along with you - - there is NOTHING - - I repeat - - NOTHING in the world more satisfying than browsing through a Walgreen's! We don't have CVS or Rite Aid in our city, but we have LOTS and LOTS of Walgreen's!!

I never walk out without a whole bag of goodies . . .

Sometimes on Saturday night Dear Hubby and I wlll just drive into town and go wander through the local Walgreen's - - we are SO pathetic . . . :-)

Well, good on you for having a feminine streak. Between my hideous allergies and my general tendency to poke myself in the eye when applying mascara, I've never mastered the knack of putting on makeup. I have a drawer full of stuff which I buy with the intention of making myself smolderingly attractive, but something usually goes wrong (see above re: poking self in the eye).

But I do, ironically, own an eyelash curler.

Hugs to Frankie & Roy. :)

I *want* to wear baby blue eyeshadow, because I am... Dolly parton? Fourteen years old? Crazy? but of course it looks terrible on me, I just look old and loopy. LOL. But it was fun trying it.

I had to go there to buy a blemish-zapper creme because apparently I am only now going through puberty. Nice.

Laurie, acne responds to hormone fluctuations. Most women, even those who didn't break out as teens, might see increase in acne in their late 20's or early 30's. I'm going through the same thing.

Posted by: Samantha at March 20, 2006 10:15 AM

Feel ya on the late zits thing. Last year I realized that I had zits, wrinkles, braces and grey hairs all on the same head. Saints be praised the braces are now off and at least the teeth look great.

Keeping them straight may be a challenge given that I've discovered that my Chihuahua, Dangerous Beans, got hold of my retainer (for the 2nd time!) and chewed it to smithereens. Braces: $3000, Each retainer: $250, Chihuahua with a guilty look on his face: priceless.

Posted by: Lauren in Austin at March 20, 2006 10:16 AM

why don't you just line your eye with blue eyeshadow? it still looks good and your STILL wearing the blue! heh...

i am *obsessed* with drug stores (and by default grocery stores). they are better than the mall because all you need in one place? hello?! what's better than that! shoppers in canada is my second stop when i get out there. the first being mccy d's (i'm deprived).
you know tho, i think it's really all the shelves of neatly lined stuff, all neatly lined up and stuff

Posted by: me at March 20, 2006 10:16 AM

Laurie,
I think it's funny how some people say that women wear make-up and perfume to please men. I now know that it's for themselves. I think that's great.

Me? I may be the only guy who would rather wander the mall than stay at home and watch sports. I like meandering through stores (not necessarily the make-up aisles). It's very cathartic. Anything to make a soul feel happy!

By the way, I didn't get to comment on yesterday's blog, but I loved your insights. I know exactly how you feel. My last relationship has left me feeling afraid of everything. And I'm a guy!

Maybe I need to hit the local Walgreen's in Philly.

Love ya, Laurie. Keep up the great work. And I think you're absolutely perfect the way you are. No need for all the make-up.

wink!

Posted by: Steve D. at March 20, 2006 10:16 AM

Yeah, sometimes on my lunch break when I need to get the heck out of the office, I drive over the brand new CVS in town and just wander the aisles, checking out the new facial products, loitering in front of the magazines and flipping thru a few, and looking at the new lit-up makeup displays. It is so cheering, I feel like I'm Holly GoLightly in the discount version of Breakfast at Tiffany's!

I finally buckled under the corporate Big Brother and got a CVS discount card. I love the $4 off a $20 purchase coupons, but sometimes they throw in random ones for stuff likefeminine lubricant items and yeast infection meds. Yikes, what kind of profile do they have on me??

Posted by: Colleen at March 20, 2006 10:18 AM

I love to go to CVS/Walgreen's/RiteAid and look at makeup and magazines. Every now and then when I'm actually a little early in the mornings, I'll drop my kid off and go to Walgreen's. I love the lipglosses and the holiday packaged stuff. Their magazines rock too. I've found kick ass knitting magazines that I've never saw anywhere else in this town. Fun stuff. I might have to do that tomorrow morning.

Posted by: Melissa at March 20, 2006 10:23 AM

I like to think I can wear blue eyeshadow *well*. If there's anything I retained from hours upon hours Teen & Seventeen mag perusal for 5 years back in the day it's that blue eyeshadow makes brown eyes *pop!* And so goes the saga of owning blue eyeshadow and blue eyeliner (but I draw the line at blue mascara... black is the only color my lashes will be.)

I might have to experiment for work tomorrow.

P.S. I love the cat baths! I wish my cats were nice enough to each other to do that. Charlie will wash my dog Sam though.... and Sam lets him!

Posted by: Kim at March 20, 2006 10:24 AM

No CVS in my area, and I hate Walgreens because they f-ed up some of my prescriptions and almost killed me but I love Long's! I recently bought a pair of false eyelashes to wear out on the town but the mood hasn't struck me to do the "practice run" that one should do to get used to them.

Posted by: Miss Wendy at March 20, 2006 10:25 AM

Wow. I thought I was the only one who wandered around in drug stores for entertainment. My BFs always thought I was nuts! Okay, I could be, but not for that reason, non? (Gotta throw in a little French, oui?)

Posted by: Terri at March 20, 2006 10:26 AM

i love your blog.

i am also a makeup fiend. i found the perfect pink polish at MAC (sheer orchidette) and foundation (prescriptives). sadly, i am better looking without lots of face paint. but my inner teenager has come to the forefront with the onset of skin that is beginning to show it's age.

mee-ow!

Rainbows and make-up. Cheep thrills! Target is my favorite. CVS are my initials.

Posted by: psychomom at March 20, 2006 10:36 AM

I am in the midst of composing a blog post about my utter un-belle-ness. Now I have to work blue eye shadow into it.

Don't be silly: of course I have worn it, and of course I have secret urges to buy one of everything from CVS (there are four of them within five miles of my house), lock myself in the bathroom and play.

Posted by: Lucia at March 20, 2006 10:36 AM

So, did you ever own the dreaded blue mascara? I took a (7th grade) school picture where I have spiked hair, some Bon Jovi looking outfit, and blue eyeshadow, liner,& mascara. My father refuses to take it off the living room wall to this day. Sigh.

Posted by: Jenny at March 20, 2006 10:37 AM

I ALWAYS go nuts when it comes to makeup and the funniest part is I don't wear makeup. I just buy tons of it.

Posted by: janis at March 20, 2006 10:37 AM

Jenny -- not only did I used to own blue mascara, I have a full tube of Bourjouis mascara in jewel blue (sephora. SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED ME, STAGED AN INTERVENTION) and I have worn it. No, I really have. Because I am tacky that way LOL.

Posted by: laurie at March 20, 2006 10:39 AM

LMAO. We're not tacky, we're Southern! There's a difference, right?

Posted by: Jenny at March 20, 2006 10:44 AM

I saw this young girl at the Mac store with bright green eye shadow. It sounds garish, but it looked *gorgeous*! Of course, she would have looked gorgeous without any make up, so maybe that's not such a good argument for colorful face paint. . .

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at March 20, 2006 10:46 AM

I'm a DVD-aholic. Every store I go into, I check out their DVD selection. I have so many films, I'll never have time to watch them all. But they're MINE! MINE!

Care to join me in a movie marathon, Laurie?

Did Roy have blue eye shadow on his head? :-)

Posted by: DebR at March 20, 2006 10:49 AM

Come to London, CAP, and I'll take you to Boots the Chemist (our version of Walgreens and CVS). Visiting Americans always love it and stock up.

Awww to the photo of Frankie and Roy.

Posted by: Martigny at March 20, 2006 10:50 AM

Love the eyeshadow post! I used to worship my older sister because she had mastered the tri-color eyeshadow (blue, pink and purple). I'll still always remember my best friend and her turquoise eyeliner too. I, however, tended to cover myself in shimmery pink. I think that's why I avoided pink for about the last ten years.

Posted by: mel at March 20, 2006 10:53 AM

And just curious - why did you have to *lock* yourself in the bathroom? Were Soba and Roy going to stage an intervention?!

Posted by: MonkeyGurrl at March 20, 2006 10:54 AM

At some point in Junior Highschool, I bought my first Seventeen Magazine. On the cover was a girl with blue liner on the inside lower rims of her eyelids. So, off I went to CVS to buy a Revlon self-sharpening, blue eyeliner. It took me years to stop this addictive behavior despite the blurry vision and blue eye goop. And sometimes, when I'm all alone, I'll whip out the blue liner and rim my eyes. Because, secretly, I loved the dramatic (if not outdated) look.

Posted by: Kim in CT at March 20, 2006 10:54 AM

That's sort of how I feel at the local True Value Hardware store. You never know when you'll need those little felt dots (which I have a thing about, and never have enough of), the unusual drawer pull, cute coffee cup (I don't even drink coffee), or unfinished pine bookcase (OK, I really did need another one). I've even been known to just drop in, out of boredom, looking for something to do/buy/plan.
I have a caption for the photo: Mmmm, tastes like chicken.

Posted by: Dave Daniels at March 20, 2006 10:54 AM

Jenny... indeed... a fine line between tacky and "colorful." heheheh

steve d. ... that's very sweet but I am saving myself for Bill Clinton, I figure all I need is a blue dress fromt the gap and I'm in like flynn. heheheh

Martigny ... when I was in London last time, I fell head over heels in love with The Body Shop, and spent so much time shopping there that when I walked out, my coat smelled like the body shop, too!! Mmmm. bath bombs.

drew! My little brother is like that with office supplies, too, or at least he used to be. I myself have a sticky note fetish.

My 20-year-old daughter came home with some blue eyeshadow and she looks perfectly adorable. Me? I wind up looking like Norma Desmond (think *Sunset Blvd.*) But that doesn't mean I won't keep trying.

i wear any color makeup i want because people think i'm crazy anyway.

i have about thirteen thousand green eyeshadows. i used to do theme nights when i was a waitress and wear colorful makeup to make my uniform more tolerable.

mermaid night was the unanimous favorite- it involved three shades of green, one blue and one shimmery teal.

i love MAC for its great color palettes and the way they can make me into a drag queen.

Monkey... Soba is trying to take over the world, you know :) Besides. Bob is such a sink hog. He loves to sit on the sink and wait for water to mysteriously drip out of the faucet, and bob is BOG and his butt is BIG and he knocks everything off the small sink.

Ah. Spinster life.

Posted by: laurie at March 20, 2006 10:56 AM

I used to rock the Cover Girl lipstick in ice blue pink when I was a teen (which I sadly realized was about 17 years ago, my 16th year). And I had bright blue mascara, and electric blue eyeliner. I must agree, it is quite fun to go to Rite Aid or Target or CVS. I have a fetish for pens and striped notebooks too. Something about all the colors and possibility.

Twice now, one our drive from work to home (30 minutes now, just moved to the country) we've seen rainbows, but the ENDS of them. We drive through a valley with foothills very close to the right, and so the rainbows poke out of the clouds. It's amazing.

I too, sometimes have quite a bit of ear, so much so that I'll be anxious for the fun or excitement to end so that I can back to normal, in control. It's a shame. I think I inherited it from my mother; paxil anyone?

Posted by: Tina at March 20, 2006 10:56 AM

CVS is the end-all and be-all of my existance. I buy everything in there -- groceries, milk, wine, paper products, cat food, candy bars, make-up, toiletries, sunscreen, holiday items, beach chair, garden tools, office supplies, over-the-counter meds, prescriptions -- it's like a perfectly-sized mini-Walmart. And there are two of them less than a mile from my house.

My greatest purchase at CVS? My handy-dandy knitwear blocking tool, better known as the Scunci steamer!

Whoever is the buyer for those stores is a genius!

Anyone remember when CVS used to be "People's Drug"?

Well, Steve D is outright asking for a date now. At least he's laid off the cheesy "winks".

Posted by: Anonymous at March 20, 2006 11:05 AM

I just had to make a comment. I read your blog every day and love it, but now you've combined two of my favorite things: knitting and make up in one place!

Makeup is totally subjective, and I think anyone can wear blue eyeshadow, regardless of age or eye color. The trick is to wear it in moderation, preferrably along with other neutral eye colors. If your eyes are blue, line them with brown liner and wear the blue shadow in your crease area if it's the denim color, or on your lid if lighter. It will make your blue eyes pop!

If you wear blue eyeliner, then make sure all your shadow colors are neutral beige or brown. Then you'll be sure to look classy, not trashy!

Of course, this is all my humble opinion, although it is based on my experience as a makeup artist. I will be the first to tell you that still doesn't make me an expert. And sadly, blue eyeshadow makes my hazel eyes look like crap! Oh well, feeling green, anyone?

Posted by: Makeuprtista at March 20, 2006 11:05 AM

I was the VERY proud owner of a shimmery turquoise eyeliner as a teen - when worn all around the eys and supplemented with a very heavy coating (or 2!) of black mascara it made me look like a freckled Lolita.....which I thought was very sophisticated. None of which actually WAS.
I'm too old for blue eyeshadow now. I'm practically too old for eyebrow pencil, but you'll have to pry that from my cold dead hands before I go without it....

Posted by: tiff at March 20, 2006 11:08 AM

Dude, I have been wearing blue sparkly eyeshadow for months now! Perhaps you are just not buying it in the right shade.

Posted by: jen at March 20, 2006 11:08 AM

You blue eyeshadow away if you want to! Even if it's only behind the locked bathroom door.

I am in fact wearing dark blue eyeliner and blue eyeshadow myself right now. I think the trick to it is to not put it all the way to your eyebrows and not lay it on too thickly (a la the 80's).

I am also one of those make-up buyer people. I will buy something from a make-up counter just because it's free gift time. Whether or not I need any of it. It's FREE!!

I work across from a mall and a Walgreens so you know it's just trouble.

Posted by: TaraL at March 20, 2006 11:14 AM

I love makeup - - especially drug store makeup.
I went through this phase a couple of years ago where I decided that I was only going to use department store cosmetics. I spent SO much money and it was no where near as satisfying! I had to have the Bourjois mascaras (I didn't have the blue, but I did have the purple) and the MAC lip glasses...
Now, I've reverted to my cheap ways and get my makeup at the drugstore or WalMart. I do still love MAC and Sephora, but try to limit it to only my favorite products.

Posted by: Vanessa at March 20, 2006 11:18 AM

Ever try to actually bathe a cat? We used to have two, we bathed the nice one ... once.

we didn't even try with the mean one.

Very giant. And squidlike.

Hours well spent.

Blue mascara and eyeshadow... I used to wear blue mascara all the time about 6 years ago, I was a water girl for the hockey team and I used to go to the parties after games pimped out in blue plaid pants, blue mascara and a big coat that looked like someone skinned a couch! It was college, there was beer, there were... hot hockey players who loved my couch coat and blue mascara and brought me drinks and danced with me until they passed out... I have very fond memories of my blue mascara and blue eyeshadow.

Have you seen those new mascara commercials with the comb applicator? I seem to remember those from the 70's. All things old get a second life sometimes. Those wedgie shoes, very 70's, candie-esque.

I bought a pot of Benefit 'Show Off' in Curtain Call, which is navy blue AND FULL OF GLITTER. Anyway, if you get a teensy tiny brush, apply it on your top lash line then a) you will look like me and b) you can carry off the blue sparkly eyeliner thing and not look like you are stuck in the 80s. If you want to really go for it then you could find some electric blue mascara, but I play it safe and stick with black mascara (also Benefit. I may be a student but I need my fancy mascaras. I wish it wasn't so expensive in the UK! OK whine over).

I’ve been lurking your blog for a while now and it is so good to know that I am not the only one. I could spend hours in Walgreens! Especially the make up aisle. I too never wear make up, but own an obscene amount of it. In fact even when it is time to “dress up” to go out I can only manage some mascara and extra Carmex (am I the only one with an unhealthy dependence on Carmex) I have a tube or tub of the stuff everywhere. Anyway thanks for all your post, I look forward to reading you everyday! I’ll miss you while you are on vacation.

But do I wear much? um.. no.

I also have senile acne.

I LOVE the drugstore for makeup shopping! There is a Long's in Northern Cali that would rock your socks off. My poor boyfriend went in I don't know how many drugstores and Boot's when we were on vacation. You have to let us know what you find in Paris...

And Laurie, I'll be in your neck of the woods for work this weekend - I can show you some super duper makeup places (where all the pros go - it's makeup heaven - the fancy and the cheap all in one spot!). Let me know....

So: blue eyeshadow? You really have to put it on right/light if you're not 19. Maybe a trip to the Trish McEvoy counter for a lesson, buy a little something there to compensate them for their time (Lash Builder!) and then you will know how to put on your CVS shadow without looking like you just stepped out of the trailer park.

Almay makes a nice 3-pack with brown & blue shadows meant to compliment blue eyes. It can be a stunning combo. And can be purchased at the CVS or Walgreens.

Not ashamed of MY girliness!

Posted by: rb at March 20, 2006 12:48 PM

I used to work in an office by myself, and it was rather lonely. On particularly lonely days, I would talk at lunch time to the CVS that was one long block and one short block away and buy myself a new lipgloss or magazine or candy bar or soda. It was my therapy.

I rarely wear make-up anymore, but when I do, it is usually the southern glamour look! My personal white whale is pink eyeshadow. Any shade of pink other than pale. Lancome used to sell my favorite colors under the name "Haute Couture" but they quit making it and I learned to make due with L'Oreal...but I have yet to find the *perfect* pink. ;-) I can't walk the aisles of any drug store without rummaging through the make-up, especially the stuff on clearance! It's a sickness.

Posted by: Rissa at March 20, 2006 01:20 PM

Hello, Ms. Laurie! I'm so glad I'm not the only girl who hardly wears makeup and yet has a ginormous collection of it--especially all manner of lipsticks, lip glosses, and of course, tubes and tubes of flavored lip balm. It all began when I was just a tot and roll-on Maybelline lipgloss was all over . . . Kissing Potion! I was obsessed with the stuff.

Drug store makeup is the best. I crack myself up about trying to score sales on drugstore makeup--2 for $9 plus a '$3 off' coupon? Score! Why I become such a cheap-a$$ when I get to the drugstore makeup counter is beyond me. . . it's not as if I hesitate over spending $14 on the perfect Clinique lipstick.

Great post - I can really relate.

My prime drug store time occurs because I tend to forget about getting cards for b-days until the last minute. I then run by the store on my way to work - ostensibly just to get a card.

But, you know, it feels wrong to just charge $2-3. I think I'm still trained from the minimum charge days.

What to do? Voila - the cosmetics row!

The antidote to blemishes is TOOTHPASTE!

Seriously, put some plain old toothpaste on the blemish when you go to bed at night...and by morning it is all dried up. Repeat a second night if particularly hideous.

I have no idea why this works...but alas at 42, I suddenly get zits.

Go figure.

I cannot leave a drug store without some kind of cosmetic product. I fell prey to those Almay color pallets that are supposed to highlight your eye color, and I totally rocked the green mascara on Friday.

I won the entire color pallet of Boujois mascaras from Lucky magazine last year and wore my Jewel Blue with pride. The secret is a light base coat of black, then a top coat of color. (except for plum--wear it alone to help give you a "no I DID NOT drink too much last night, thankyouverymuch" look, after you most certainly did)

Sephora is an evil force known to suck an entire paycheck from my bank account without batting a beautiful eye.

Look at us. We're all completely silly!

I bought drugstore mascara a while ago that came with a free tube of sparkly stuff (it says you can wear it on eyes, lips, or anywhere!). As soon as I got home I locked myself in the bathroom, CAP-style, and tried out the sparkle on my eyes, lips and everywhere. So fun! Then I wondered, "What am I, a 5-year-old?" I looked ridiculous and admonished myself for such silly behavior. But I'm still secretly giddy when I see it in my drawer, even though I never wear it.

Anyway, I've been enjoying your blog for a while and haven't commented. Today I felt compelled to enter in, because I'm so glad that I'm not the only irrational woman out there!

And the March 18 post - who knew that everyone else was just as afraid of the world out there as I am? I too fight the urge to hide out in my house, even though I know there are people that love me and fun things to do just outside the door.

Thanks, Laurie, for being so honest and for bringing out the honesty in your readers. We're all in this together, aren't we?

Frankie and Roy! How sweet!

I love a drugstore, but makeup seems to have lost its hold on me...I go straight to the office supplies, because, you know, I don't have enough pens or notebooks. As a teenager, though, I had an affinity for frosty pink lipstick (Rose Quartz by Cover Girl!) and eye shadow in shades of grey, and how did I love the blue mascara? Let me count the ways! And also the Love's Baby Soft, which now transports me straight back to 1988 when I smell it. :)

I think maybe Roy is ready for blue eyeshadow.

Laurie, The Body Shop is in the States, too; there are a couple in the Boston area and I'm sure they must be in other cities, too. I don't dawdle in drugstores pondering makeup as I used to, I seem to have given up wearing it unless it's a special occasion, but I still remember (from my teens) Love's Baby Soft, that blush stick that was a cream color and changed color according to your skin pH, Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers (faves: peppermint & root beer), and the mascara with the triple comb to apply it. I was too chicken to try lining the inside of the rim of my eye, it sounded dangerous (and a good way to get an infection!). Actually, I think I did try it once & the stuff just didn't stay on.

On the rare occasions when I took a lunch break I would sometimes go on a Swan Boat ride in the Public Gardens or on a lunch-hour Harbor Cruise. Sigh.

I love seeing a rainbow in the sky! If I'm not home I call and try to tell everyone where to look to see it...doesn't always work. When I was in college I saw a rainbow on my way to a class. I asked some people if they saw it too. One girl told me she was too busy to be looking up at the sky. What a shame. I'm so glad you snapped a picture of it...I'm hoping to have my camera some time when I see one!

I've heard about make-up. (makeup? Make up?)

I've never worn it really. I put on mascara that is now probably 3 years old (I know, microbiology issues... blah blah blah).... and eyeshadow that is equally as old but less prone to microbes...

At any rate, I think it can make you feel a bit better sometimes (especially if you use my cosmetic of choice - cherry chapstick).

You should just be you. Whoever that is. You write beautifully, and you are funny and good. Not that you need an anonymous person to tell you that.

I have not bought anything by Wet'n'Wild since the 80s. I think I am afraid that if I do, I will suddenly find myself with big 80s hair and shoulder pads that belong on a football player.

Posted by: Dagny at March 20, 2006 05:36 PM

Hahaha blue eyeshadow, and mascara! My first ever make-up purchase was sky blue eyeshadow, in a little scarlet box with a see thru lid from Boots the Chemist. My mother wears blue mascara, and blue eyeshadow. As she has the bluest eyes known to creation, it's quite a startling effect. You would totally love Boots and Superdrug, let your inner girlie-teen out to play! Plus, amazingly cheap, and also they do stock snickers, sodas and magazines. Really, you needn't go anywhere else in the mall for the total shopping experience.

Posted by: irene at March 20, 2006 05:53 PM

Yay! I'm not alone! I almost never wear makeup at all (only on special occasions, and then I go all out and need to do it right...) yet I can't stop buying it! Lipsticks and glosses more than other things. And I too get home all excited to run into the bathroom and play with the new products. I figure practice makes perfect, right? At least when I need to do it up for some occasion, I will know what works on me. :) And...what totally doesn't! (Purples on me make it look like I've been beaten...seriously, it's scary)

So, give in to retail therapy here and there, and there, and there... it's good for you and the economy! (And keeps the drugstores in business)

Oh my lands! Who knew Wet'n'Wild was still around? LOVED their nail polish with matching lipstick. Must go now to the Eckerd and see if they have it.

A girl after my own heart!!!

I remember wearing the blue mascara--boy, did I look like a doofus. I seem to recall small children being fascinated by my glowing globs of blue. Sadly, I was long past the teen-age years. Yikes!

Ah, it's the Southern Girl coming out in ya. Don't know about that blue eyeshadow bit. Would wear it every once in a while back in highschool aka late 70's. Do remember having to spend a LOT of time in front of the lighted makeup mirror to get it just right. Don't know if the world is ready for it again.

Loved this ....

I was born with an inner shopper, and she says: "Only $1.99? That's a bargain at any price! I'd be practically wasting money if I didn't buy that!"

I SO identify .... they should display a hazard sign in front of these retail havens, fo sho ... or at the very least some kinda warning, like they do in ads for cigarettes.

I could purchase maybe three seaside villas with the dollars I've spent roaming these aisles.

Posted by: Michele at March 21, 2006 03:57 AM

i was just as CVS myself yesterday and decided that my purchases are one of the girliest that could be assorted from CVS.

-one box of Tampax (the multibox! ooooh)
-one box of CVS brand Midol (have your cramps for half the cost!)
-one package of fudge covered graham cracker cookies
-one box of Velveeta shells and cheese
-one bottle of Vouvray white wine (on 50% clearance)
-one box of pre-gooey'ed waxing strips
-some bobby pins

behold, i am the girliest shopper, in the world. this is just what was selected after discussing the situation with my check book, and my check book said i had to put back zit creme and eye shadow. damn check book, sucha downer

Turquoise glitter eyeshadow from Sephora is absolutely amazing and not quite opaque enough to make you TOO smurfetteish. I highly recommend it. Other good colors: gold glitter, hot pink, bright green. I like to do a sunset glitter effect, kind of subtle, kind of not.

Don't be afraid of the blue... MAC also has some amazing opalescent blue-green eyeshadows that absolutely ROCK ROCK ROCK.

just like you. take care!

So when are the cats going to stage a coup and post a picture of you with the blue eyeshadow actually on?

Posted by: Daryl at March 21, 2006 07:36 AM

I love kitty bath time! My boys do that all the itme, and it is soooo cute!

I'm addicted to Walgreens (small town, only drugstore we have). I could literally go there EVERY day, and be happy!

Besides make-up, office supplies, and Lortab (uh, yeah...), they also have that wonderful thing called the "As Seen On TV" aisle!! Woot!!!

Posted by: Shelly at March 21, 2006 08:23 AM

They just built a brand new, first in the area, WALGREENS about 5 minutes from my house!!!!! And they sell fresh brewed coffee in there....imagine, strolling the lipgloss aisles with a fresh brew in your hand....I'm in Heaven!!!!

I'm the same way with red lipsticks. Once, in the eighties, I read an interview with Isabella Rosellini, in which she saidf that she always wears red lipstick because it's cheerful. So I have spent years trying to find a red lipstick that works for me, which is hard because my skin has yellow undertones. I have a largish bin of some pretty expensive reds that just don't work. I cantcantcan't throw it out though-- cheerfulness! The thought of living without red lipstick makes me feel deprived.
So the reddest thing I wear out is cherry chapstick, but when I come home, I vacuum in OPI's "I'm not really a waitress."

in high school, i bought l'oreal's frosted acid green eyeshadow and hid in the bathroom while i used it as shadow AND applied it over my lipstick for a ghostly, weird look. i did not let anyone see my face, but two weeks later, the most punk girl in school showed up wearing the exact same makeup --lips and all!

i rarely wear makeup either, and yet i too have a lot of it. and i feel the same about the drugstore, except chicago prices make it not so cheap.

Does anyone remember liquid eyeliner...I spent hours applying it and when I finally had it down to a perfection, I had grown up and realized I just needed to use a eye pencil.....

Posted by: Courtney at March 21, 2006 12:00 PM

Courtney... I could never apply liquid eyeliner! I was so jealous of girls who could do it!! I did apply eyeliner to the inner edge of my eyelid though (eeewwww) (yet, I loved it!)

And oh man, do I remember the Love's Baby Soft. OOOOOH yeah~!

Posted by: laurie at March 21, 2006 03:17 PM

I didnt read the comments so I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet....but there is one more FABULOUS FACTOR to CVS -- if you try the make up and don't LIKE it -- YOU CAN TOTALLY TAKE IT BACK!!!!!! for reals! that's some hot shit right there.

Posted by: Lara at March 21, 2006 10:06 PM

Smurf throw-up! Now that paints a picture! LMOL HAR HAR HAR Not that I know what a Smurf is. Nope, not me. I didn't grow up in the 80's. Or live through Boy George and Cindy Lauper's "colourful days".... HEE HEE HEE
