January 24, 2006

I am silently infecting my coworkers.

bob-peepingbob.jpg

After three days at home with a posse of cats and a hacking cough, I stumbled back into work today because I desperately need human interaction. At some point yesterday I looked at Bob, who apparently spends all day peering out the windows while standing on his hind legs, and for a moment I may have hallucinated that he was actually standing upright on his back legs and about to walk out of the room.

That was all the sign I needed to tell me that I really, really had to get out of the house.

My boss is happy that I'm back, even if I am spreading what is probably the bird flu to everyone at my office. I had chicken broth for dinner two nights in a row -- if that isn't evidence of full-blown bird flu, I don't know what is.

(Also, have ya'll noticed that in addition to making no sense at all, I am also convinced that if I joke enough about the bird flu it will somehow trivialize itself, much like the Great Monkeypox Outbreak of 2002, and will never materialize into the disastrophe predicted?) (Again, with the hallucinating.)

I have nothing to say. Also, I have nothing to say because I HAVE LOST MY VOICE. For some people this is just a minor inconvenience, but for me, A Talker, this is pure hellatious tragedy. I suck at pantomiming and I have about as much energy as a cabbage, so charades are out. What if I need to call someone? What if I need to yell "Watch Out!" to a passer-by? What if I meet the hot fireman of my dreams today and he falls madly in love with my cat-hair-covered, pale, phlegmatic self and I cannot tell him my phone number?

Because that could happen. Yes indeed.

Anyway. I'm off to heat up a tupperware container of chicken broth now, because I'm sure the best cure for the common bird flu is to drink the soup of a bird. And if ya'll see a butterscotch-colored cat with a beer belly walking upright it's just my cat Bob. Tell him to lay off the Meow Mix.

Get well soon! :) Here's to more chicken broth, some chicken noodle soup and a warm blanket to nap under... hey, and who said you couldn't knit while sick and mute :)

Posted by: Rhett at January 24, 2006 11:18 AM

Oh my gosh, I have been sick too...ever since the New Year. It sucks. I have been spending way too much time with the pets. I also went back to work still feeling sick because I needed to be around people.

Feel better!!

Posted by: Mary at January 24, 2006 11:19 AM

I hope you get better soon. The French need you to get your wits and energy back. I've been sick enough at times to lose my voice too. To some, it is a public service.

Posted by: Miss Wendy at January 24, 2006 11:20 AM

Take lots of vitamin C, too!

Does Bob truely watch the neighbors or is there a bird outside that he has his eye on? What a funny guy! Maybe he's checking for cat burglars.

Posted by: Carol M at January 24, 2006 11:22 AM

Carol -- it has been SO WINDY here for days, and every little noise and bird and leaf gets Bob's eagle eye. We had gusts of like 60 MPH! Crazy.

Miss Wendy -- I have a feeling if the girls could bottle laryngitis (sp?) and give it to me over our France trip, they would LOL.

Posted by: laurie at January 24, 2006 11:25 AM

Speaking of bird flu, did you catch last week's episode of Will and Grace where Jack has Evian flu because he shared a bottle of water at the gym? Or maybe somebody already mentioned it in comments last week. Anyway, hope you feel better soon!

Posted by: Anna at January 24, 2006 11:29 AM

Get well soon.

If you do meet that hot fireman of your dreams you can write your phone number on a piece of paper and hand it to him.

Just sayin'.

Posted by: Gail at January 24, 2006 11:31 AM

Anna!! AHA! I knew my Evian Flu would catch on!!! hahahahahaa

Posted by: laurie at January 24, 2006 11:31 AM

I have the flu too... feel better soon!

Posted by: Devon at January 24, 2006 11:32 AM

Jeeze - you can't let that firefighter get away...maybe you should just go ahead and tatoo your phone number on a good body part you wouldn't mind showin' For everything else - carry a whistle, that 'll teach those people who might be giggling because the talker can't talk (I only know about the giggling because it's totally what I would do, sorry).

Posted by: cursingmama at January 24, 2006 11:33 AM

Here's a little tip... since bird flu originated in Asia, you treat it with Hot & Sour Soup. Trust me, it'll clear out that phlegm in no time flat.
Hoping you get well soon, dear Auntie!

I hope that tupperware is microwavable.

(Can you tell I used to sell tupperware) :)

I hope you feel better soon. I had the bird flu 2 weeks ago. it suck ass!!

Posted by: Valerie at January 24, 2006 11:38 AM

Feel better soon!!
There's tupperware that's not microwaveable???!!!

Posted by: amanda at January 24, 2006 11:40 AM

Bob is my kind of cat.

Feel better soon!

Posted by: Sandee at January 24, 2006 11:47 AM

Poor Laurie! Feel better!

Posted by: Imbrium at January 24, 2006 11:48 AM

I know you're detoxing and all....but a little gargle of wiskey ('wiskito' as grandma called it) will kill the germs, ease any throat pain and make you feel all better. You can add lemon and honey too if you can't handle straight wiskey. But I think you can.

Oh and another thing I've been meaning to say. Please don't mix alcohol and tylenol. It can be a very dangerous combination.

This is the information on the label:
Alcohol warning: If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take acetaminophen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Acetaminophen may cause liver damage. Do not use with any other product containing acetaminophen

This was not meant to scare you, just inform you.
Hope you get better soon :)

Posted by: psychomom at January 24, 2006 11:49 AM

Oh! And ya'll notice the coincidence -- I got SICK as soon as I stopped drinking the blessed curative ALCOHOL. Yup. Serves me right.

Posted by: laurie at January 24, 2006 11:52 AM

Well, I've got to de-lurk now! I'm still laughing at the thought of Bob walking upright out of the room! Absolutely time for you to get out into the world, girl.

And if I can turn all auntie myself for a moment: once long ago, I too was heartbroken in LA (though I'm a native of the city of angels). The ex is long gone and I've been with a wonderful man for years now and this spring we'll be married. You just hang in there, go to Paris and kick it, and soon--bit-by-bit--and then in a big, ol' rush--love will come back into your life. (Via a fireman reading tatoos on body parts--that I'm not sure about...)

So to close: DAMN girl, you are funny!!! And I LOVE reading your blog. Thanks for doing it!

Posted by: MaryMR at January 24, 2006 11:53 AM

Bob was perhaps trying to fend off the sneaky bird which attacked his Mommy and made her sick?

Posted by: Kellie N at January 24, 2006 11:54 AM

Get well soon! No, you don't seem to have avian flu...but more of an avian-broth-flu. *LOL*

Posted by: Elemmaciltur at January 24, 2006 12:03 PM

Take care of yourself!

Posted by: ck at January 24, 2006 12:04 PM

Is that the Avian or the Evian flu? No matter, put a little gin in the chicken soup and you'll be feeling better in no time flat.

Princess Perry the Bi-Polar jumped on my lap and stood on the desk to get a better look at Bob. I think it might be love ;-D

Posted by: Leslie at January 24, 2006 12:20 PM

Beer, NASCAR, spying on the neighbors? Bob sounds like my kind of guy.

I had surgery this summer and while under the influence of some pretty strong painkillers I hallucinated that the cats were talking to me.

Posted by: Debbie at January 24, 2006 12:30 PM

Surely, you'll be in top health when you go to Paris! Drink wine, grapes are good for you! Really...

Posted by: Laura in Ok. at January 24, 2006 12:32 PM

Okay, trot down to your local Mexican place, and order a large bowl of Cocido (or Ox-tail soup)- make sure to add plenty of hot chile to it, and lean over and breathe in all that salsa-y steam.

Trust me- you eat that and your nose will clear out and your tummy will be happy. Its my mom's cure for all ills.

Posted by: Angel at January 24, 2006 12:32 PM

I've never commented here, but I'm like you... a talker. I had laryngitis once for a week, it was HORRIBLE! I couldn't get my point across at all, and I felt to useless. I also had to take 3 days off of work because I was teaching at the time and well, couldn't teach. When I did talk, I sounded like a little boy going through puberty... it was so sad.

Posted by: Niquie at January 24, 2006 12:40 PM

Oh, holy crap. I'm sorry you're sick. But that what if section almost had me spewing Dr. Pepper out of my nose.

Posted by: shari at January 24, 2006 12:45 PM

Disastrophe! Great word!!
And the hot fireman will KNOW your number, because they have uber-caller ID, and they'd only be at your place if you called THEM, right?

Posted by: Feral Dustbunny at January 24, 2006 12:49 PM

Moonshine. The cure for what ail's ya. I don't think it's a coincidece at all. After all, some alcohol in moderation is good for you! Feel better soon.

Posted by: Beth at January 24, 2006 01:04 PM

Yeah, whiskey and lemon....hmmmmmmmmm.....
It's -4 F here, that is sounding good even without a cold and it being noon and all

Posted by: Trixie at January 24, 2006 01:10 PM

i hear chicken broth works against the 'thrax too.

Posted by: maryse at January 24, 2006 01:21 PM

Feel better! I had this same cold right after New Year's. and joked that I was communicating with only air. But it was true--I couldn't get a sound out.

Posted by: Mintyfresh at January 24, 2006 01:24 PM

I don't know if anyone has alerted you to this hot tip, but I read "somewhere" that if you eat Kim Chee every day you won't get the bird flu, and that no one in Korea has gotten the bird flu due to the fact that they eat Kim Chee every day. Also, according to this thing I read somewhere, they extracted the bacteria that exists naturally in the Kim Chee and injected it into 10 birds with the bird flu and 8 recovered. I hope I haven't grossed you out too much with the bacteria part.

Posted by: kenamit at January 24, 2006 01:25 PM

Laurie, do not waste the hot fireman of your dreams! Carry around sticky notes and pen so you write him frivelous loves lorn poems and stick them to his helmet. Along with your phone number.

Oh yah, I hope you feel better soon. I seem to have escaped the bird flu that's going around here and have caught something else entirely.

Posted by: Kim at January 24, 2006 01:25 PM

Posted by: ~drew emborsky~ at January 24, 2006 01:25 PM

Funny but as I was reading this, Boris was busy checking out the scene outside. He doesn't stand on his hind legs though. I have placed a stool under the window so that he can sit and flirt with the neighbors.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Posted by: Dagny at January 24, 2006 01:37 PM

Whisky is good, but you know what works? Truly? Gargling with salt water.
The other thing that rocks is grabbing Oil of Oregano and putting two drops in a glass of water and downing it. It takes like ass but it works.
Feel better, bonita.

Posted by: Mary-Margaret at January 24, 2006 01:46 PM

Hunny; sorry you're feelin' poorly (sounds almost Southern?!) I'm sure these Santa Ana's aren't helping much. I can vouch for the KimChee recommendation; also copious amounts of wasabi. Yummmmmmmm.

Posted by: MonkeyGurrrrl at January 24, 2006 01:48 PM

Hope you feel better really soon!! I am sitting at work in which I'm sitting at the judges bench listening to a trial going on and in the middle of this I read your post and see your goofy cat and about roll out of my seat laughing at you. Not because you are ill but because your cat. Tell Bob that peeping does carry a hefty fine, and I don't think he's ready to give up the meow mix just yet.

Posted by: Carol L. at January 24, 2006 01:48 PM

Ha! I love your blog.

Posted by: C. at January 24, 2006 01:52 PM

Also, didja hear Earl Hickey (Jason Lee) got the friggin CHICKEN POX?!?!! Maybe that's what you have. Although I know you'd much rather have monkeypox (b/c monkeys are just way cooler than chickens!!!!)

Posted by: MonkeyGurrrrl at January 24, 2006 01:52 PM

Yikes! Glad you're feeling better, and I agree, it's a shame your voice is gone!
Did you get to knit during your recovery time?

Posted by: Meem at January 24, 2006 02:06 PM

I hope you feel better soon, Laurie. Perhaps the talented Bob can make chicken soup for you?

Posted by: Mandy at January 24, 2006 02:22 PM

Hope you feel better soon! What works for me is this combination, it's deadly to cold viruses. I haven't been sick for 2 years. Yikes! Maybe I shouldn't say that!

Hope you feel better soon! When ya gonna knit Bob a wifebeater of his own?

Posted by: Chris at January 24, 2006 02:53 PM

I wish I could find the link...

I read an article interviewing a reputable ornithologist at the University of Florida. He said that a pandemic is highly unlikely. First of all, the people catching avian flu from birds are people who are slaughtering infected poultry -- i.e., coming into contact with blood/feces (sorry hon!). Also, it's not likely that the virus will mutate into a form contagious among humans.

It COULD happen, and thus everyone is running around like... well... you know... but it probably WON'T happen. So eat your soup fearlessly and feel better. :)

Posted by: Pyewacket at January 24, 2006 03:30 PM

drink some pedialyte. (water too)

it's better for you than gatorade but will help get you back on track.

Posted by: miss kendra at January 24, 2006 04:06 PM

seems to me, bob would like one of those cute multilevel kittie stands, ya know...the carpet covered ones? or is this the only exercise he gets all day?

Posted by: denise t at January 24, 2006 04:07 PM

My cat,Big Red Sheldon from Sitka, would be envious of Bob's svelte profile. I love cats of every stripe, color, attitude. I think that you are one great "Cat Mom". Sometimes, when in the course of a mid-nite dream "holocaust", my buddy, Sheldon introduces his presence by nip-biting ever so gently, and doing a trilling vocalization. Did you know that Leonardo Da-vinci also admired cats, as did Samuel Clemens. Well, that gives at least 2 great men (aside from our dads)Later. Aud

Posted by: Cristina at January 24, 2006 04:46 PM

My boyfriend completely lost his voice and that man is a TALKER. I had to field his phone calls for two days and the first thing everyone did when they heard this was to laugh, long and hard. A friend finally took mercy on us and told us about a throat spray called Singer's which we bought at Whole Foods (I've also seen it at health food stores). I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't been there but the stuff was amazing. It cleared the problem us immediately.

I have some cold cure recipes you might be interested in...... at http://www.glittyknittykitty.co.uk/archive/2004/12/its_that_time_o.html The soup REALLY works. The tea is delicious and comforting for a sore throat, and the berry smoothie stuffs you full of vit C and tastes great! Get well soon.....

Bob is soooo much more active than my boys...Bailey and Jack practice Olympic Couch Flopping. See them on your NBC networks this February! (one of the lesser NBC networks, to be sure...) They have a new trainer this year, though, so thing may look up!

Feel better, Laurie!

Posted by: Shelly at January 25, 2006 05:59 AM

Poor Laurie. One bright spot - at least you are sick NOW as opposed to right before/during your Paris trip!

Bizarre home-remedy/old-wives-tale suggestion of the day: For sore throats or laryngitis - my grandma used to give us sliced, raw onion between two pieces of toast. Not the easiest sandwich to get down but it *did* kinda work. Hey, I said it was bizarre!

Feel better!

That cat wants to sit and gaze out the window. I believe that's why many homes have windowsills. Could you put in a shelf or something?

Posted by: B. at January 25, 2006 09:47 AM

I think if you're seeing Bob walking upright you need to either STAY HOME or book him on David Letterman.

Hope you feel better! Chicken soup cures everything but moonshine chasers will keep you healthy.

Posted by: Carrie K at January 25, 2006 10:46 AM

Bob needs a cat napper.
http://www.contentedpets.com/catnapper.html

Window perch and fleecy kittybed all rolled into one. Cats love these, particularly on sunny days if the napper is located by a sunny window.

Recommended soups for cold season:
1) Thai tom yum, heavy on the chilies
2) Vietnamese pho, "ditto".

Good thing your blog doesn't require dictation!

Posted by: Heidi at January 25, 2006 10:59 AM

I'm chiming in on the Zicam-Airborne treatment as well. One suggestion for the Airborne, though. Break the tablet in half and both pieces in a bottle of water. When it's done effervescing, shake the bottle vigorously. Otherwise, it's kind of gross.
But they work. They do.
