This scarf brought to you by Fauxy, the Transvestite Muppet
On the one hand, it's ... fluffy. On the other hand, it's ... fluffy?

No, that is not my desk. Are you serious?
You thought my desk would be that clean?
So the Pep "blocco" scarf in red and black is... uh. Fluffy. I still love the way the yarn goes from red to black real quicklike, especially on big needles, and the yarn is very soft. Yet there is no escaping the obvious.
This is one ugly ass scarf.
But of course I knit onward and crazyward, even bought me another ball of yarn to finish it (50% off at the big Unwind sale!!), because Lord knows I cannot just leave well enough alone... no. I have to take well enough and make it nine feet long.
There is something very wrong with me.
Dear Karman,
If you are reading this, please stop. Also, since I know you well enough to know you are still reading this, I apologize for your scary Christmas present. I plan to make it up to you by wrapping this beast around a nice bottle of champagne.
Love,
Laurie

(Right now my mom is reading this and saying THANK GOD THAT SCARF IS FOR SOMEONE ANYONE BUT ME THANK YOU LORD I WILL BE A BETTER PERSON FROM NOW ON I PROMISE AMEN.)
I love to knit, even when I am doing nothing but garter stitch on a BOLD and FLAIR-FILLED project such as Ms. Muppet. People on the bus just look at me, then look at the big fluffy and look away. This scarf is the knitting version of a social disease. I love it. Karman, I hope this scarf brings you as much isolation and public scorning as it has brought me. In Los Angeles, City Of Freaks, I suspect the gift of soluitude may be the kindest gift of all ... even if it is wrapped in red and black fun fur stripes.

I love the scarf. Red, Black and Fluffy can it get any better.
Posted by: Mindy at December 7, 2005 10:29 AM
I don't think it is that bad! In fact it would go nicely with my winter coat.
Posted by: Tammie at December 7, 2005 10:31 AM
I love it! It's, um, different! But not ugly! I picked up knitting last week and am halfway through an ugly ass scarf for my Mom's fiance (i.e. 5th husband). I started to use this dark brown color but it looked like knitted poop, so I'm using burnt orange instead with brown stripes. It's, um, how they say "fugly".
Posted by: Pink Rocket at December 7, 2005 10:33 AM
I agree! It would deffinitly match my coat :) (this coming from a girl who has a purse shaped like a sheep!) Different is good, nothing is too strange :)
Posted by: Laura at December 7, 2005 10:34 AM
I am the woman who went into the LYS last week and asked for something ugly! I loathe the yarn I made my sister's Christmas scarf out of, but I bet you a dollar she will fall all over it.
Plus if it is presented wrapped around a bottle of champagne - well they say presentation is everything!
Congrats on getting it done - now where are your Fuzzy Feet? You started a whole crazy knit along, and you haven't finished yours! Beware the power of your blog and only use it for good and not evil.... a hundred of us followed you blindly when you said you maybe sorta were thinking about kind of having a KAL!!! (actually I love my FF and thank you for leading me to them!)

Oh my lord, I have a top 10 comment! I would say solitude is definitely a gift on any form of public transportation is LA. I am just catching up on blogstalking after a bout with the Head Cold of Misery and work accumulated during said Cold. So congrats on the divorce finalization, finding your camera, and spreading kindness to children halfway across the globe. You make me smile :) Keep on knitting, I have an affinity for the bold and the tacky.
Posted by: shananigans at December 7, 2005 10:41 AM
It's ugly the same way a Brussels Griffin or French Bulldog is ugly. Ugly, yet you still want to pet it and cuddle with it.

Heh...as one of my bosses would say, "Oh, look, another roadkill scarf." Heehee. Hey, whatever keeps the crazies from talking to ya on the bus!!!
I think you should start talking to the muppet scarf while you're knitting and see how people react to that, lol...
Posted by: Eklectika! at December 7, 2005 10:45 AM
It looks very pretty and made for a giant!!!
it certainly should keep the person it is for quite warm...
Posted by: Cheryl at December 7, 2005 10:48 AM
Ugly? But it's a scarf, so it can't really be ugly. The other day my son told me my pajamas were ugly. His girlfriend said, "They're pajamas, they can't be ugly" (smart girl).
Posted by: psychomom at December 7, 2005 10:50 AM
Ok, it's ugly in a midwestern kind of way but not in an Ab Fab "Dahling, you must tell me where you got that simply mah-vu-lus scarf?? Is it a La Croix?" kind of way.
Posted by: Debbie at December 7, 2005 10:52 AM
So, this is just a thought but, I think it would be fair for you to ask for some kind of compensation from this Unwind store for the link on your page- not that you would expect a thing like that, you're obviously way too selfless for that kind of thing but me, I would be all over that if I were you...I will probably never, ever go to LA but, I clicked on the link and became a little annoyed when I saw that ALL of thier stuff wasn't available for sale online.
And I bet I won't be the only one who, without you, would never have heard of this place but now will have lingering thoughts of buying stuff from this swell looking store.
Thanks for being here every day and giving me something to look forward to when I go on to do my blog-stalking business-(which, BTW, it is your fault that I blog-stalk in the 1st place so, you should be proud.)
(whew! Sorry that was so long!)
Posted by: Ashley in Oklahoma at December 7, 2005 10:58 AM
oh yeah and, I totally forgot to add that I love the scarf! (Even though I hate knitting with it, I love the cuddly, fuzzy goodness that is the tacky novelty yarn-I use it often...)
Posted by: Ashley in Oklahoma at December 7, 2005 11:00 AM
Am I the only one who thinks "Cat in the Hat"?
Posted by: TAMARA at December 7, 2005 11:05 AM
Oh, yeah, now I see it - Cat in the Hat, definitely! Think how happy Karman will be to NOT get a matching Cat in the Hat style hat.
Posted by: Chris at December 7, 2005 11:10 AM
ugly is a strong word.
let's call the scarf "vivid," or "conspicuous."
or like its creator, "colorful."
Posted by: miss kendra at December 7, 2005 11:13 AM
Just to be honest, I think "ugly" is the best word for it. This is no reflection on your knitting. The yarn is ugly.
Posted by: rb at December 7, 2005 11:23 AM
Oh Chris... I hadn't even thought of a matching hat!! hee hee ... poor karman....
Posted by: laurie at December 7, 2005 11:25 AM
That scarf so looks like Animal from the Muppets. He's my absolutel favorite Muppet. This needs a matching hat with big bulgy eyeballs and fat hairy brows.
Posted by: Karen at December 7, 2005 11:32 AM
I think matching wrist warmers would be very appropriate too. If she moved her hands quickly she could mesmerize people!
Posted by: ~drew emborsky~ at December 7, 2005 11:34 AM
Anything wrapped around champage will be well recieved! It really isn't bad though...besides, you made it and that alone will make the recipient appreciate it.
Posted by: ck at December 7, 2005 11:36 AM
If by "mesmerize" you mean "nauseate" ...?
Posted by: laurie at December 7, 2005 11:36 AM

Posted by: ck at December 7, 2005 11:37 AM
Ugly? I think not! No, not at all ugly. It looks like a fabulous "warmie" to me! I rather like the fuzzy contrasting look. Personally, don't think a person as warm, funny and creative as yourself could actually pull off "ugly"! The Queen Cat, a.k.a. Bladie Mae would loooovve this to curl up on and further adorn with her beauty! We soooo look forward to your daily entries....absolutely primo amusement!
Posted by: kim at December 7, 2005 11:41 AM
Yes, I do see the Cat-in-the-Hat effect (although wasn't his scarf red and white?), but I still like it. I think the softness trumps the color -- you wouldn't want something scratchy but beautiful rubbing against your neck, now would you?
Laurie, I've been loving your blog, it's always reliable for a good laugh. Glad to see that the knitting is so therapeutic for you (and in my view, the most therapeutic knitting you can do is a project that knits up quickly -- just like this scarf!)
Posted by: Sarah at December 7, 2005 11:44 AM
Oh my! Just the title alone made me laugh. You are soo funny. Love reading your blog each day.
Posted by: Donna (squitchinglady) at December 7, 2005 11:52 AM
Your desk? Are you kidding? It doesn't look like anyone works there! LOL, that was my first thought when I looked at the pic. :)
Posted by: Sharlene at December 7, 2005 11:54 AM
I love it! Yes, it's ugly, but it's sort of a charming ugly. Beauty isn't everything, after all. Also, if it's wrapped around a bottle of champagne, it will be welcomed with open arms. :) And sure it looks out of place at White Guys in Ties, Inc, but they could stand to loosen up a bit. Knit on, sister!
Posted by: Julie at December 7, 2005 11:58 AM
That's so funny because I just emailed pics to a friend of mine today of a scarf I'm making for another friend to see what Friend#1 thought of it. Because I know it is one of those items which is either Hideously Ugly or Funky Cool .... and I couldn't decide. Granted, either way, with the backlog of Christmas knitting to be done and time running out FAST, it's not like I'd be able to start from scratch again anyway. So let's just call it Funky Cool, shall we?? :)
Oh, and regarding the Muppet Scarf ... Karman is truly scoring here. Because not only is she getting a scarf knit by the famous CAP ... she's getting a scarf MADE FAMOUS by CAP. Now that's cool.
Posted by: Kat at December 7, 2005 11:58 AM
Whew, I'm with mom on this one. Poor Karman. Oh wait, she gets champagne! Just teasing. Looks like a politically correct candy cane of sorts.
Posted by: NolaPete at December 7, 2005 12:02 PM
I'm with Karen. Say it with me, "AN-I-MAL! AN-I-MAL!" ::pant pant::
And hey, there's a little Jerry Jeff Walker in all of us, you know that Texan who sings he "likes [his] women a little on the trashy side." Just substitute "knitting" for "women" and you've got it down.
Posted by: Rachel at December 7, 2005 12:03 PM
I say give her the bottle of champagne first and then when she is good and liquored up, give her the scarf. That will dull the pain.
Actually, it isn't really that bad. I bet it is soft. And from what little I know of Karmen, she seems like the type of woman that can pull it off. Some chicks are just funky-cool no matter what, even when wearing a muppet pelt.
Posted by: Kristy at December 7, 2005 12:04 PM
i can't really comment. i just picked up the biggest baddest plaidest (and i mean entirely plaid) coat in a whurld. seriously. and it has a matching scarf.
and i second the hat idea. that would be awweeeeeeeeeeesome!
Posted by: s at December 7, 2005 12:08 PM
I just had to say that I love your new tag line with your status changes and the addition of "displaced Southern." As a newly divorced displaced New Yorker living in the Midwest, I had to smile.
Posted by: Katie at December 7, 2005 12:19 PM
LOL!!!! That is one FUGLY scarf!!!
Posted by: Kenny at December 7, 2005 12:20 PM
I used to own tights that, though not furry, would have matched that scarf really really well. I wore them with my doc martins and cut off jean shorts and a black coat with tails, so L.A. it hurts. Thank the heavens my parents are uncamera savvy or I might have pictures to go along with this comment.
Posted by: Mary (in Tahoe) at December 7, 2005 12:21 PM
Maybe this is one of those items that looks better once it's on the person?? You know how some clothes just don't look nearly as good on the hanger....maybe the sterile desk environment just does not show off this scarf's best side??
Posted by: Susannah at December 7, 2005 12:36 PM
I would wear such a scarf shamelessly and with much joy. It's campy, yes, but still awesome.
Posted by: Tish at December 7, 2005 01:00 PM
Ha ha, my first thought was, "whose desk is that?", before I even read the caption. But I Love the scarf. And I thought Chicago was the City of Freaks. Or maybe New York. Hmm. Los Monstruos.

With the number of fans you have, I'll bet you could sell that bad-boy on ebay - put the money towards the "pay the %&$# divorce lawyer" fund!
P.S. i'm a divorce lawyer, but still your biggest fan

Well if Karman lives in L.A. then it should be OK. I mean, you-all wear Uggs when it's 72 degrees outside. What's wrong with a Cat-In-The-Hat scarf after that?
Seriously, I was on vacay in Key West last week, walking down Duval Streat, mindin' my own (slightly intoxicated) business, and there in a store front window was a huge display of Ugg boots, vests, hats, and purses for sale. In Key West! It was friggin' 80 degrees! I don't even think about putting mine on until it's below 10. I still don't understand it, but I now do believe you.
Posted by: Imaginarymaggie at December 7, 2005 02:23 PM

As Grumperina mentioned on her blog yesterday, as long as it is SOFT (and not puke-colored - my edit), non-knitters will love it no matter what! And it sure does look soft! And a lot of people love red & black, and I'll bet Karman is one of them!
Posted by: Mary at December 7, 2005 02:35 PM
I don't think the scarf is ugly either. It is muppet-like. But hey...who doesn't like muppets?
And not to give you any more ideas...but there is a Dr. Suess type hat in the Hollywood Knits book. Just sayin'.
Posted by: taral at December 7, 2005 02:40 PM
"Just a sweet transvestite from Traaaaansexual Transylvania..."
Because, now that I'm thinking hat and swooshy scarf, I think Karman also needs matching shoes:

And apparently muppets are very sexy. Didn't Macy Gray say once in an interview that when she first started singing she thought she sounded like a muppet and someone told her if that was true then she was the sexiest muppet they had ever heard...Karman can be the sexiest muppet EVER SEEN
Posted by: Lori at December 7, 2005 03:06 PM
LOOOOVVVEEE IIIITTTTTT!!! (Say this in a sing-song voice-my neice does all the time) I would love to wear this scarf-and I would wear with PRIDE!
Posted by: Charcy at December 7, 2005 03:16 PM
I bet that this scarf rates highly in the "other" 4 senses: Probably smells good, Feels great, tastes... um... non-toxic which is all you can ask for in a scarf, and sounds silent... so it has some visual issues.... whaddayawant, perfection? Happy knitting. And I am SO relieved that wasn't your desk.
Posted by: PainterWoman at December 7, 2005 03:25 PM
My theory is that this scarf really IS for your mom and not for Karman. Way to throw your mom off track!!! Heh.
I like the scarf, but I don't know if I would wear it.
However, if it gives you joy in making it, that's all that counts!
Posted by: Mary in Boston at December 7, 2005 03:26 PM
I like that scarf! It really needs a hat. And Chris is wrong, not shoes, but knitted boots! Too bad it's so close to Christmas. I would LOVE to make some of those as gifts, if solely to see the look on their face.
Posted by: Carrie K at December 7, 2005 03:39 PM
you know... as much as I agree with the muppet-ness of the scarf, there's something pirate-ish about it as well - sexy, fuzzy pirate scarf! (like johnny depp... mmm... johnny...)
Posted by: jacq at December 7, 2005 03:47 PM
Mmm...Johnny...and Orlando...in the same movie...

But I love you ;-)

If you take a pointy chopstick or a darning needle, you can carefully pull out all the fluff currently trapped in the stitches. The thing will bristle.
That scarf's kind of cool in a campy way, but please don't send it to me. I don't need one. Just don't ask me how I know about the fluff trick.
Posted by: Marie at December 7, 2005 05:33 PM
WHO KNEW?? The Cat in the Hat was a tranny?
I REALLY think that scarf coud do with some hair removal...perhaps a quick trip to Sweet Cheeks...

I have to admit I made a muppet scarf...two actually. The first one was red. It was for my nephew. I actually added an orange fun-fur bobble for the nose and some of those big doll eyes on a post for him. Turned it into an Elmo-ish scarf. And my best friend wanted blue fun fur...she got cookie monster. And *gasp* I'm actually thinking of making me a yellow one and using that orange fur for the beak....Big Bird! And possibly even Snuffaluphagus (?) *shakes her head* Ok..maybe I should go lock the fun fur up....

My hot pink and mauve Miss Piggy fun fur scarf is brighter :-) Truly muppet road kill :-) I admit to liking novelty yarns. I've got four garbage bags of them all bagged up and ready to move to our new house :-)

You really should think about turning this obsessive knitting into business. An online store with scarfs for CAP addicts would make a great start, don't you think folks?
And then let's go worldwide! I could be your representative for Central Europe ;-)
Laurie, it's so good to see you're still in great shape!
