Roy says, thanks ya'll. Also: Send Bacon.

Today we have progress ... Roy is eating! Of course, he is 1) not eating in the kitchen and 2) not eating on a cat plate, instead preferring a nice dinner plate and 3) eating thinly sliced free-range no-salt turkey from Whole Foods, a mere $9.99/lb.
Which of course begs the question ... is Roy really sick or JUST NOT SPOILED ROTTEN ENOUGH?
Thanks for the kind words, Roy and his person are very appreciative. (Soba is wondering where her g-ddamn fan club is however and plotting ya'lls death.) Roy is still sort of falling over from time to time, but manages to work up enough strength to scratch me baldheaded twice a day during what we lovingly refer to here as OH GOD I HAVE TO GIVE YOU THESE ANTIBIOTICS PLEASE STOP HURTING ME.
I have to go now, his water dish is getting tepid. Thank you.
P.S. Yes. In my mind, crazy runs a spectrum, one end being minor (freak outs, PMS, oddities) and the other end being "wears a bra on one's head, speaks into a Pepsi can and directs traffic in her nightgown." I may have possibly seen that kind of crazy when I was about seven years old and apparently? Made a colorful impression on me.

He just feels paltry. Doesn't help that the paparazzi are in your face, I guess.

Poor baby. My two are getting on in years and I am terrified that anything bad will happen to them. Get well Roy. Wear your UGG booties to keep the chill out!

Hurray for Roy! What a darling he is in all of his pictures. So glad he is improving!!!
Did you get an email from me today or did I, once again, get swallowed up by your spam filter?

I love Roy and I'm glad he's doing better, but I must say, Soba is my favoritest. And not because I'm a-feared of her. Sounds like you're doing much better as well. :) *VERY* glad to see (read?) that!!!
Posted by: MonkeyGurrrrl at November 22, 2005 05:04 PM
Oh, I forgot to tell you, if you are giving him liquid antibiotics, mix it in with some canned food. After I had my cats' teeth cleaned last year we had to give them anitbiotics (they had teeth pulled) and after one shot with the dropped, they ran and hid. However, we managed to still get them their medicine by disguising it as food. Worked like a charm. Anything to make your baby better.
P.S. It is ok to take a day off from work to deal with this. If somehting happened to one of mine, I would do the exact same thing.
Posted by: Erin at November 22, 2005 05:06 PM
If you lay him on a towel, with his head over the edge, then gently wrap it around him (fairly tightly), you can give medicine without getting clawed so much. I think it's less stressful on the cat too.
I had to do that when we gave Mr. Tickles antibiotics, and she never did catch on that being laid on the towel was followed soon by that nasty pink liquid getting shot in her mouth.

Laurie, I understand completely how you feel. I am SUCH a cat person - - my two are my babies! I have had cats in the past become ill, and I know how bad it can be. You just feel so helpless - - don't you wish you could just snap your fingers and make them better?
Roy looks like such a doll-baby. Take care of him (and yourself, too!)

Totally ok to take a day off work for a sick child. Your co-workers do it all the time. Details, details, that their children are not furry. Their loss.
I am glad to hear that Roy sounds better!! Or... maybe it's part of their plot... beware...

Go Roy go!!
Posted by: Dagny at November 22, 2005 05:32 PM
Oh boy, not EVER one to actually POST a comment. Usually just talk at the computer then gradually move on... Parallel universes, you & I, in many ways.
BUT, the ONE cat friend who you just know you can't bear the thought of losing, even though they're all your "favorites" (and you've already lost EVERYTHING else you ever thought REALLY mattered)...
Well, you mentioning that Roy has asthma made an alarm bell go off. My "soul cat" died suddenly last year. Seemed like he had asthma for a while, too. I had an autopsy done and they discovered he had severe heart disease and his lungs were filling up with fluid, probably for quite some time, which is why he had breathing problems at times. Can't tell from those x-rays (I'm an artist, blah, blah, blah), but how did his lungs look? Did they consider heart disease? It's something that CAN be treated in cats...

Warm fuzzies to Roy and hope he enjoys the free range turkey. You know he'll never eat cat food again, right? What the heck, he deserves it.
Posted by: Jane at November 22, 2005 05:38 PM
Roy, hope you're feeling well soon. How long do you think it'll take the others to figure out that if they pretend to be sick like Roy they can get better food? Well, okay, other than Bob, how long do you think until the clever ones figure it out?
Posted by: jodi at November 22, 2005 06:18 PM
Glad to hear Roy is feeling better. There is a part of me that thinks he may be trying to milk it though. I mean salt-free, free range turkey from Whole Foods? Don't let Natasha and Boris find out about that. They'll want to move in with you.
Posted by: Dagny at November 22, 2005 06:24 PM
Purl, love your writing. I'm glad that Roy is better. Reminded me of the story about how to pill a cat. You can find several versions through Google, all end up with the pill unswallowed and the person going to the emergency room. For dogs, wrap the pill in bacon, it's gone.
Posted by: Sue at November 22, 2005 06:33 PM
Oh Lordy how I hate pilling the cat! We all love Roy so much and will gladly send pounds of bacon if necessary. You two hang in there!
Posted by: Janet at November 22, 2005 06:36 PM
When my babies are sick (or sometimes even just because), they get deli turkey breast, too, along with grilled chicken breast, and baby food (the baby food is their favorite). They are so completely worth it!

Being crazy is okay. As long as you don't verge into the mental institution realm, it's what makes you interesting.
Anyway, yay for the cat feeling better. And you don't know spoiled animals until you see our dog, who would rather starve than eat dog food. And she is very picky about the human food she gets, and again, would rather starve than eat something that doesn't please her picky palate. But that's why you love your animals, for all their weird idiosyncrasies.

Best loves and bacon to Roy. Old man cats are especially endearing and will always hold a soft spot in my heart! My oldest man, Jimmy, is a one-fang wonder as well. He says bacon and butter are the best thing you can give to a cat on the mend.
Posted by: Bad Amy at November 22, 2005 07:55 PM
Awwww! Poor Roy! And poor (literally and figuratively) Laurie! You'd think that an industry that came up with "Neuticals" for the dog that misses his cojones would be able to come up with a way to administer an antibiotic that doesn't cause trauma to the cat, and trauma (and bleeding!) to the owner!
Hope he feels better soon, because the picture may be worth $1000, but the cat is priceless.
Posted by: Julie at November 22, 2005 08:04 PM
The look of contentment on Roy's sweet face in the last picture, back at home with his person and his posse, says it all. Life is great when you are so well loved AND when you get to eat like royalty. Oh, and life is great when you can love so well. You and Roy are both lucky, I'd say. I will send healthy wishes Roy's way. Hang in there, both of you.

Soba's fan club is a secret society - esp. from her - if she knew how many of us there really are, she'd try to marshall us into a military coup! So as a matter of national security we must remain underground...
By the way even though I've been known to occasionally speak into a pepsi can, I've only directed traffic in my nightgown once...that whole bra on the head thing? Never happened! They totally made that part up to make me look bad. :D
(Roy - do you prefer thin or thick cut bacon?)
I'm thankful Roy's eating again (the pill dissolved & hidden in some canned food or butter does usually work pretty well)
Posted by: Tinker at November 22, 2005 09:09 PM
2 words: FAMILY EMERGENCY.
I'm sorry, it's too upsetting to talk about. I don't want to bore you with the details. It's a private matter. I just can't come to work today.
Hope Roy feels better... Do you think they wind up being favorites because they need more care? Orville was my favorite until Wilbur got sick, and since then he's the darling.

I'm a little late but someone commented on your last post that you needed a voodoo doll for the tall guy and possibly Mr. X as well (by the way, both asses). This is a little dark for me http://www.theanticraft.com/badjuju.htm but I still think funny....so knit yourself a voodoo doll if you think it will help. I too, like you went through the great unanticipated breakup/divorce. Mine was four years ago and at the time it broke my heart. What I discovered though was amazing, and quite possibly worth the pain. Love you and wish you were local because I would be so pysched to raise a glass of red wine with you. Best to Roy....and to you. I think you're the greatest.

Remembering the 3 F's of life- those things that make life good and can't be lived without--- good Friends (like cats and dogs and a select few people!!), good Food (like $10 a pound Free-range, all natural turkey), and good Fiber (like knitting your at-the-moment most favorite yarn on your most favorite needles-you have beautiful ones!-...You and your cats have it all!!!! But- it might be time to consider buying a whole free-range turkey, cooking it yourself--You have time, ya know ya doooooo.. Then freeze dinner for you and your friends for a long time.....maybe $2 a pound???? And cats like the grizzley bits at the end of the bones!!! i just had to check on you and Roy today, glad you are both sounding better!!

Glad Roy is feeling better. My vet gave me a tip on giving my sick cat medicine and it has been working. Wrap your cat up in an old blanket/towel and wrap them like a burrito. If it's tight enough, they can't escape and/or claw you to death and it makes giving the meds so much easier.

Oh, sweetie - I MUST be feeling better because I'm reading your blog (or is that vice versa??)
I'm jealous of your and Drew. Pout. Okay, I'll get over it. We need to do a Galveston knit weekend...
I'm sorry to hear about the car & cat and other expenses, what a bummer! But, my dear, you are beautiful. Even with a bra on your head...
Posted by: Annie at November 23, 2005 05:08 AM
Good morning, Purl dear and squishes to the Insane Kitty Posse (even Soba!) Do try baby food if the turkey is breaking the budget. Just get the all meat/broth kind (NO onions/powder/etc..very bad for kitties - even Soba!)
And I'm not a vet (though I do play one on the Internets), but have worked for 10+ years for a vet clinic - I can't really see what's going on in the xrays --what did the doctor tell you?
And we promise (right, commentors??) that we won't share our horror stories once we hear the diagnosis. We don't want to scare the Roy.
Posted by: Dusa at November 23, 2005 06:10 AM
Ditto from me on the towel thing, although what you really need is a meds-giving assistant. My daughter is skilled at it and wants to become a vet, want me to send her out there?

Dear Roy,
We hope you are feeling better soon. It sounds like your Human is taking care of you, even though she is a little bit mean to be shoving pills down your throat. Oh well, you know how those crazy humans can be - you can't live with 'em, and you can't live without 'em. We know she means the best for you!
Love and stinky cat kisses,

OK, just one look into that precious face and I fell in love with that little guy. I'm glad he's feeling better and my sympathies to you for having to give him medicine. We have four cats. Three of them are no problem when it comes to medicine. The fourth, however, turns into demon spawn and her person ends up looking like she's been in a bar fight. I'm at the point of telling the vet that any medicine he wants this cat to have must come in the form of an injection.

Hope Jeep gets some turkey too. :-P
Thanks to Maria F. who found the KAL that I was too lame to look up myself!
If you aren't up to knitting one yourself, I'm sure you have tons of speedy knitting readers (uh, myself not being one of the speedy ones -- you'd get a juju man in about 3 years, at which point you'd ask "What/Who the heck was this supposed to be for? I, Laurie, am an incredibly happy person.") that would be happy to make and send one to you.

Looks like Roy's plan to have his very own Thanksgiving turkey feast is a few days ahead of schedule, atta boy!!
I've been following your knitting/catting/living tales for quite a while now, and I think you're an amazing lady! All the best from snowy Wisconsin.
Posted by: L at November 23, 2005 07:51 AM
Roy has what I think of as a Pink Panther face, with that sort of elongated snout. He is so handsome! And spoiled, of course, but kitties should be. :)
And what is so wrong with "colorful"? As a fellow Southerner (and possibly colorful myself), I say: Nothing. Who decides what's normal anyway?
Posted by: Julie at November 23, 2005 08:14 AM
You're doing awesome, girl! Sounds like Roy couldn't be better taken care of! Glad he's feeling better.
If'n you're giving Roy pills .... two words for you from someone who has to give her cat one to two pills each morning ..... Pill Gun. You can get them at the vets. Cheap and ohmygod amazing!
Also, errrr, "hot pics" from haji? Did I miss when you shared those??????? :)
Posted by: Kat at November 23, 2005 08:45 AM
one of my kitties has asthma, and must take cortisone every other day. what I did was, I bought a pill crusher; I crush the tablet and sprinkle the powder on her food (it would work fine with expensive turkey of course) and she takes her medicine without an argument. I just have to watch her to make sure that none of the other five cats eats up her medication, but it's much easier than trying to shove a pill down her throat every other day.
Posted by: Lise at November 23, 2005 08:46 AM
One more pilling trick: take some vaseline (or bacon grease) and smear it on a pencil eraser. Stick the pill to it, then use the pencil to poke the pill down his throat instead of your fingers. I find that I'm faster and more accurate with this ohsofun task when I'm not fearing imminent puncture!

Poor Roy!
I once had to help my housemate give her cat a pill; we wrapped the cat in a towel, and I held her (the cat, not the housemate) while my housemate gave her the pill.
Maybe that would work for you too?
