Los Angeles at night.

city-at-night.jpg

Good Lord this city is so beautiful at night. This is the view as I wait for the bus. [What you don't hear: honking. What you also don't hear: Me complaining because the bus was 48 minutes late. Speaking of complaining, Yes, it's still hot! And did ya'll know that complaining burns calories? Do you wonder how I am not 68 pounds with all the heavy-duty cardio complaining I do? Yet... I am not.]

P.S. I am still so in awe of the techmology... first thing I did this morning was check out the map! Hi Christie in Winnipeg!!!!Hi ya'll PEI-ers! And Jen in Japan, and Kellie in Australia and hi Nancy in Cypress Texas, go eat some lunch at the Hill Country Cafe and think of me, please? You're close enough to Kerrville. Just a hop skip and a jump ... order the chicken fried steak. Mmmmmmm. Hi!

This map proves once and for all why I was right to vote for Al Gore, since he created the internets, and ergo this brilliant way of me staying very, very busy at work. Thanks, Al!

Comments

Omigod, no comments? But you wrote this a whole minute, maybe two, ago!

Posted by: Naomi at November 16, 2005 09:54 AM

Do you think Al Gore will see this and comment? Also, can I admit to a totally inappropriate crush on him back in the day?

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 09:59 AM

I had a total flashback to Romper Room when the "teacher lady" held up her "magic mirror" (ping pong paddle) and said hi to Mikey and Carey and Jessica and...whoever....

Born and raised in La la land...I miss my 2.5 hours of commute between school in West LA and home in East LA....I didn't knit then, but I learned to do all of my homework on a moving vehicle...

Posted by: Mary (in Tahoe) at November 16, 2005 10:00 AM

CAP,
yours is always the first site I check every morning. Your stories make my day, judging by that map, you have quite the fan club. Will you please, please write a book?

Posted by: Kate at November 16, 2005 10:01 AM

I cannot imagine work without the internet. Without it I'd actually have to ... well, .. work! (egads!) :)

Posted by: Kat at November 16, 2005 10:05 AM

Laurie, I heard the Mega Millions winning ticket was sold in California, and I immediately thought of you. Imagine how much yarn one could buy with $315 Million!

Posted by: Kim at November 16, 2005 10:19 AM

:) It is indeed a beautiful city at nite. Especially downtown. It's important to remember this - Thanks. BTW, did you see the beautimous moon last nite while you were waiting for the bus? Simply gorgeous.

Posted by: MonkeyGurrrrl at November 16, 2005 10:21 AM

Kim! If I had won $315 million dollars, I would not be sitting in my cubicle here at White Guys In Ties, Inc, wearing mean shoes and drinking generic coffee.

I would be rolling naked in money on my bed while my newly purchased love-slave, Armando, brings me litle drinks with umbrellas in them.

Yup.

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 10:26 AM

Ugh, I could have been with you one the "Los Angeles is beautiful at night" part -- but that's a picture of my office building. Work is not beautiful! But have you ever stood on the roof of the Grove parking garage on a clear night? It's surprisingly scenic.

Posted by: jnovgirl at November 16, 2005 10:33 AM

Mmmm chicken fried steak... makes you gain fifty pounds just thinkin' about it.... and worth every one of 'em!

Posted by: Kris at November 16, 2005 10:34 AM

ok, you posted your map after i did, and you have 366 little internet pins... i have 20 and one of them is mine.

i hate my life.

Posted by: maryse at November 16, 2005 10:37 AM

Maryse. Stop that! I made up 237 of them.

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 10:55 AM

I added myself to the map. That was fun. While the LA skyline is quite beautiful at night, I thank my stars every night that I don’t work there any more. That commute by bus was a killer. Who am I kidding, my commute still sucks, just in a different way. I love the Internets :x

Posted by: shananigans at November 16, 2005 10:56 AM

I think I must have been talking to you when you took that -- you are an amazing multi-tasker, managing all that technology at once. Al would be proud.

Posted by: jen at November 16, 2005 10:59 AM

i heart al

and i don't really hate my life...

Posted by: maryse at November 16, 2005 11:06 AM

My Dear Laurie, I didn't invent "the internets," per se, I merely took the initiative in creating it. I am, however, thoroughly flattered by your inappropriate crush on me, and moved to admit a similar requited feeling. Tipper will be out of town until Monday; please, do call.

Posted by: Al Gore at November 16, 2005 11:09 AM

I forgot, Laurie, that you count Texas among your homes (I am from Dallas)! My mom and I are going to be in Kerrville for Thanksgiving (some woodworking show or something for my stepdad). . . any recommendations? Especially for either that hash brown cassorole you talk about or trucker-sized breakfasts? :)

Posted by: wenders at November 16, 2005 11:12 AM

Dear Al,
I cannot believe you found my website and commented! I knew you were a cat lover! I kiss you.
Love,
Laurie a.k.a "goes to third base on the first date with former vice presidents"

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 11:12 AM

How'd you know my middle name is "Armando"...

reminds me of a joke where the punchline is:

"Soy Armando, y estoy cagando..."

Posted by: ~drew armando emborsky~ at November 16, 2005 11:16 AM

It’s wonderful to be appreciative, even when inspiring night time scenes are cased by late busses. I live for silver linings, can you tell?

BTW, I just printed off your roll-brim hat recipe (more of a recipe than a pattern I think) so that I can knit it (or many of them) in the car next week when we drive from Michigan to Key Largo, FL… without cruise control! Yikes! I was on the phone with Drew last night who MADE ME purchase a cart full of yarn because it was on sale at Michaels for 50% off.

That B**ch. He then welcomed me to your Tupperware storage containers-full-of-yarns-that-will-be-used-someday hellish world.

Posted by: Imaginarymaggie at November 16, 2005 11:17 AM

Wenders!! If you go to Kerrville, you MUST NOT miss the Hill Country Cafe!! They have seriously the best food ever on the planet, and each meal comes with a side of white bread and gravy.

How can you beat that? Where else does your "side salad" course consist of a stack of Country Pride white bread and gravy??

I'm pretty sure they serve breakfast all day (and everything on the menu is good!) But I recommend the chicken-fried steak, with mashed potatoes and gravy and you have to have the homemade pie, OHMYGOD SOGOOD. The fried chicken is good, too.

Plus! Super affordable! Great service! Sometimes they have fried okra, too, when in season. And the green beans are always "Southern style" i.e. cooked until they are so limp there is nothing healthy about them, but soooo good!

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 11:19 AM

Wenders, here is the breakfast menu, too:
http://www.hillcountrydining.com/kerrvilledining/hccwebpages/HCCBreakfast.html

You can't go wrong with this place, you will need a wheelbarrow to roll you away from the table after breakfast, because there is SO MUCH FOOD. And all of it is covered in gravy.

*whimper* dear lord I miss gravy

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 11:22 AM

Sure beats the view waiting for the bus outta NYC. Until you get outta the tunnel and see the skyline at night. Other than that, LA's got it beat!

Posted by: Reenie at November 16, 2005 11:23 AM

LOL! Drew cracks me up every time!

Posted by: Imaginarymaggie at November 16, 2005 11:24 AM

I love the comments on here...they totally make my day!!!
Yay for the internets!!!!

I have an inappropriate crush on Patrick Fitzgerald, US attorney. Big Time Crush. *swoons*

before that, it was Howard Dean. And then, classically, it was Al Gore. Of course.

I made my own map too so add memememememe!

There used to be a restaurant in Humble, TX, just outside of Houston called the Jackson Hole. They had the best chicken fried steak I have ever tasted. And they were huge - hanging over the edges of the dinner plate huge. What a fabulous place. I heard that they've gone out of business though. Living in California, I do miss southern cooking. Fortunately, I can go to my mother's house regularly. Also fortunately, she taught me how to make gravy!!

Posted by: Kristy at November 16, 2005 01:14 PM

"The Jackson Hole"?!?!? Sounds like some gay porn movie. AURGH!!!! I said "PORN"!!!!!

Oh! Ha. Look where my brains went. Yes I see it now as a link in your name. NOTHING to see here folks, move along.

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 03:59 PM

Oh my gawd...you mentioned me in your blog! That is too amazing to me as I hold you in celebrity status, and for you to say hi to me...I'm blown away by the same strong prairie wind that whipped up three foot snow drifts for me to shovel last night! Trust me, that's BLOWN! So now I feel pseudo-famous by association! I must tell everyone I know!!! YAY!

Posted by: Christie at November 16, 2005 04:50 PM

Ok... I don't comment much.. but when I seen you mention the hill country cafe like you had been there? My oh My .. it brings me back.. I grew up near Bandera Texas just a hop skip and a jump from Kerrville... I have two brothers that live in Lake Hills on Medina Lake... small world.

Posted by: julie at November 16, 2005 05:33 PM

I can't move my flag from NC to Afghanistan (where I really am) so if you click on me just remember I'm OVER HERE.
and remeber body armor adds 10-20 lbs.

Posted by: haji-o-matic at November 16, 2005 07:13 PM

JULIE holy crap! I lived in Banderas as a kid!! We moved from Comfort to Medina to bandera to Kerrville, just like a little nomadic tribe of trailer-dwelling crackers. My grandma had a lovely house on a farm in Blanco. And we ended up at a great place in Comfort when I was about seven. SMALL WORLD!!!!

Posted by: laurie at November 16, 2005 09:19 PM

I'm greatly saddened by the fact that my little do-dad doesn't show up on the frapper screen unless you click my name :(

Posted by: Megan at November 16, 2005 10:28 PM

WEE HEEE WOOOO

I got mentioned in CAP's blog!

I've been to the cafe. I survived to roll out to the car and then gave thanks I wasn't driving, as I took a well deserved nap after finishing a whole order of CFsteak. I am (to my lasting dismay and body size) a charter member of the clean plate club. Tho......I WILL refuse to eat anything not WORTHY of staying with me for the many years it will be with me...lol

Y'all stay good, have fun with Drew and EAT well.

Posted by: Nancy France at November 17, 2005 10:01 AM

I loved LA at night... My Dad's office was at 3600 Wilshire Blvd... I believe it is now considered a mid-century modern "relic." (the building, not my Dad... he's long gone...). I liked eating at the restaurants at the tops of buildings and looking toward Santa Monica, or Malibu... or even Anaheim when the skies were clearn. (The Arco tower was pretty cool when it was neat. Thanks for the memories. Let me know when you go to Pasadena. Sigh.
