Spooky! And hot. And people will be unable to drive in the dark.

All the cats have their costumes on for Halloween...

Roy is Elvis, of course:

Sobakowa is the Unabomber:

Bob is going as Drew's cat, Chandler:

And Frankie is an orange cat dressed up as a black cat:

It's going to be almost one hundred degrees today in the Valley. On October 31st. ONE HUNDRED DEGREES. Hello, hell, meet witch's tittie! It's hotter than both of ya'll over here!

Mystery Bird migrated north -- two houses north. The neighbors managed to catch Bird and now he has a nice home with some non-crackhead types on my street. Aside from the fact that the neighbors probably refer to me now as "the crazy spinster who holds conversations with strange parakeets on the patio" ... all is well that ends well.

And because today is the first workday of non-daylight-savings time, nobody in Los Angeles will be able to drive and it will take us all approximately 3.25 billion hours to get home. Luckily, I have fuzzyfeet knitting to keep me occupied. So far, I have completed a whopping two inches of the cuff. Some folks in the knitalong are ALREADY DONE. To these folks I say: Come to my house and bring your over-achieverness! We have lots of things for you to do with your free time here at Chez Spinster! Like... mopping! Plus, you get to hang out with Elvis, the Unabomber, Drew's cat and a schizo calico. AND ... you'll lose at least three pounds from sweltering in the heat. What more could you ask for?

But leave early if you're driving. Ya'll know.

I'm back, was on vacation (VEEEGGASSS ... uh, with Mom) for my 40th ... Loved the tale of Bird, glad he found a home.

Chase, did you and your mom go to vegas and triple it?? Are you rolling nekkid in money as we speak??

Posted by: laurie at October 31, 2005 10:37 AM

I would love to come to your house - I've had a fuzzyfoot done to the toe shaping for a grumblegrumble Months now. Must get to cracking.

I've also been informed that I must finish the Gryffendor scarf before the 18th!

The only reason I was able to knit both feet this weekend is because I didn't do ANYTHING else. No vaccuming, definitely no mopping, and not a lot of sleeping. I am boring, but I have fuzzy feet!

Posted by: amy at October 31, 2005 10:48 AM

Love the costumes! I couldn't see Bob's though... =(

Posted by: ~drew emborsky~ at October 31, 2005 10:52 AM

Who needs fuzzy feet when it is 100 degrees?! You californians are NUTS. I've got the heat on here but it isn't that bad. Only 13C (just below 60F). which means that kids don't need snowsuits under their halloween costumes (a regular design challenge in these parts).

Posted by: JoVE at October 31, 2005 10:53 AM

Just think of what that heat will do to all the funsize Snickers and other assorted chocolates.

Purl, it's your duty to save as many as you can by quick consumption!!

Someone put a bowl of candy in our break room today -- EVIL! Even grosser, said bowl contains Boston Baked Beans, quite possibly the yuckiest candy ever made. (And I love Peeps, so you know I do not discriminate against most forms of sugar!)

Posted by: cant_talk_knitting at October 31, 2005 10:54 AM

re: fun-size snicker saving ... I had potato chips for breakfast. I am a disgusting human being. Ah well.

Hey, Drew, is the pic not showing up?

Amy!! Loved the fuzzyfeet pics!!

Posted by: laurie at October 31, 2005 10:57 AM

Hey, Laurie! What color are you using for your fuzzy feet? And what yarn? Did you get the email I sent you last week about the Texan preacher?

Kristy

Posted by: Kristy at October 31, 2005 11:06 AM

Love the costumes! I actually crossed over the "Lady who loves her pets to much" Line and promptly bought a $5 witches hat for Brian. I think he would rather have Roy's costume instead :)

Posted by: Miss Mantoan at October 31, 2005 11:08 AM

Kristy! I am using blue Patons Up Country. It's kind of a denim-y color. I did not get your email, but I am having spam filter issues again, and I need to go through all my mail, will look for it today! I'm sure it's in there ... and I need to know what Texas preachin' you may be emailing LOL.

Posted by: laurie at October 31, 2005 11:14 AM

Roy, my fave, my love.

Elvis, I should have known...

Posted by: Shelly at October 31, 2005 11:21 AM

dear laurie,
how about we trade? you can live here in Chilladelphia, Pennsylvania where you already need to be wearing at least two pairs of fuzzyfeet at once to keep the chill off your toes and i'll hang out in nice warm california. i'll even buy you a mop.

good deal, huh?

Posted by: liz e at October 31, 2005 11:23 AM

Why does Soba always get the bad rap? I am completely and totally enthralled with her. I'm sure she's just misunderstood. Hey, can someone 'splain to me why Wally-Martus doesn't have *any* yarn with wool content?! I stopped by two in the San Diego area, hoping to get started on the feet-along, and all they had was acrylic. Sheeeeesh.

Posted by: MonkeyGurrrrl at October 31, 2005 11:29 AM

So how do you get the zippers in those little costumes????

Glad the birdie got captured and is ok and is not food for the cats..

you always make me laugh and make my day.

Posted by: cheryl at October 31, 2005 11:30 AM

Its good to see Frankie - she's been out of the limelight a bit lately!

I'm 3/4 of the way thru my first Fuzzy Foot, and discovered taht I made the cuff 5 inches long for no known reason, I guess i'm gonna run with it tho and hope it doesn't strangle my ankle when it felts. :)

Posted by: Amy at October 31, 2005 11:47 AM

Hope you have a miners hat for your ride home....it's gonna be dark girl!

You would look so darling with your bright light shinning in everyones face...they'll love ya for it.

Tootles~

Laurie

Greeting from Minnesota. The early Saturday forcast (realize that saturday is 5 days off) is for snow and ice.

How can you knit with wool when it is 100 degrees? I would be swooning from the heat. Does it ever get cold enough there to need wool socks? Or do you just save them for trips to colder climates?

Posted by: Mona at October 31, 2005 12:17 PM

Hey Liz E, it's not that bad here, today!

Laurie, I hope the traffic delays don't prevent you from being home when the trick or treaters come. Have you trained the cats to give out candy?

Posted by: Anmiryam at October 31, 2005 12:22 PM

Alas, Laurie, no, we didn't get rich, but we had a fine time nonetheless ... Mom didn't gamble much, and I did ... both of us came home with the same amount of winnings ... none!

Hey, your cats give me an idea .... a "Kitty in Costume"-themed slot machine .... yeah ...

Posted by: Hurricane Chase at October 31, 2005 12:34 PM

It gets cold here! Sometimes in the 50s heheheheheh. Well what can I say, this is why I love to travel to cold places!

Posted by: laurie at October 31, 2005 12:39 PM

I love Bob's costume! Can I tell you how much I want to cat-nap him and keep him for myself? He is just about the cutest thing in the world.

It is raining in Oregon and I can't believe it's going to be 100 degrees in CA! At least your AC is working again.

Posted by: Jen at October 31, 2005 01:30 PM

oh I didn't know you were doing a fuzzy feet KAL! Can I join retrospectively? Mine are in the washing machine felting!

Posted by: Janine at October 31, 2005 01:46 PM

I though it was just Washington DC area drivers that can't handle the change in daylight savings time! (or the first snowflake!).
I want to do Fuzzy Feet, but I have to finish two mini cat afghans for my grandmother's two cats before Thanksgiving.
My two cats are going as Houdini and Scaredy Cat.

Posted by: Laura at October 31, 2005 02:16 PM

Uhhhh, I thought witchtittie was supposed to be really COLD.

but I can sympathize, even though it's down to the mid 50s outside where I am, the Powers that Be apparently decided they were gonna spend the whole winter's supply of natural gas on heating my office building today and it's hot enough to bake eggs in here.

I fully expect to have some kind of respiratory infection or other dread disease tomorrow based on the temperature differential between inside and outside

Posted by: fillyjonk at October 31, 2005 02:24 PM

Felix had to dress up today too. He just wasn't happy. (a picture is on my blog for all to see).

It is 4:30 now in Chicago and it is DARK! I am scared. I drove today. Wish me luck getting home.

Posted by: Mary at October 31, 2005 02:36 PM

i'm on my way.

see you thursday.

Posted by: kendra at October 31, 2005 02:54 PM

Sincerely I am sorry for the crazy heat. I don't think I have ever lived anywhere where it is not freezing cold on Halloween. It is pouring rain here in Portland and already almost dark. It's 4 pm. This is not right.

You would think I would've started the Fuzzy Feet...but no. I spent the weekend pouring over knitting books for ideas for some fabulous alpaca that a friend brought back from New Zealand. And maybe smelling the yarn a bit too much. Whatever.

I'll try to send the rain and cold your way. Can you send a bit o'sunshine?

Posted by: taral at October 31, 2005 04:13 PM

So glad the bluebird of happiness is alive & well!
I don't think it made it all the way to 100 did it? It felt more like low 90's - yep, the news just came on - there's a RED FLAG ALERT! (we so. californians just Love our Drama) - warning there is LOW humidity & a potential wind advisory! (It's not even an ACTUAL wind advisory - just a POTENTIAL one! WARNING - We all may have a bad hair day for Halloween! Residents are stockpiling hair gel!
P.S. I think Elvis is the cutest (but don't tell Soba - I don't want to piss her off!

Posted by: Tinker at October 31, 2005 05:32 PM

My husband just called me to complain about the traffic and I was able to cite your blog. We laughed and then groaned. What is is about So Cal drivers that they cannot handle the slightest change-up? God forbid it should ever snow around here!

Posted by: Erin at October 31, 2005 05:44 PM

Hey, Laurie! I meant to mention this on your travel post of a few days ago but I got busy...If you are looking for a fun, relaxing trip that won't cost too much and is fairly close to home, I would HIGHLY recommend a long weekend (or more...) to Cambria/Morro Bay area on the central CA coast. It is probably 3 or 4 hours north for you; it is about 4 hours south from here. My sisters and I went two weeks ago for 4 days and it was so nice to get away. We spent the better part of one day at Hearst Castle (beautiful!) and seeing the sea elephants. There are great scenic beaches (though chilly for swimming, which is ok for me because we were more interested in climbing on the rocky parts of the beach...) and a couple of great places in Morro Bay for seashells, especially sand dollars. It was foggy and cold while we were there and we loved it. (I got to wear some of my knitted things!!) And there is a wonderful little yarn shop in Cambria called The Ball & Skein & More. I bought my first skein of bamboo yarn there! And there are plently of nice restaurants with both good food and alot of character.

Ok, that was long winded, sorry, but you really should consider it if you need a mini-break (as we did) before you can manage a real vacation.

And if you didn't get that preacher email, let me know. I'll resend it. :) Kristy

Posted by: Kristy at October 31, 2005 05:59 PM

No kitty costumes here, but the feline chillun appear to be wazzed out on sugar. Leaping from cat tree to sofa, pulling down towels, standing at the bottom of the steps caterwauling. They are starting to creep me out. Happy Hollerweenie, Purl. And do be sure to share the preacher story.

Posted by: Dusa at October 31, 2005 06:43 PM

Glad the Bird found a home. Love your cats' costumes! Your cats are so cute. I can't imagine what it'd be like to have 100 degree weather on Halloween... it never gets to that in the summer here (Seattle)....

Posted by: Norah at October 31, 2005 11:55 PM

i *heart* roy

Posted by: Anonymous at November 1, 2005 05:49 AM

My cats were Mama Cass, The Wicked Witch of the West and Charlie Brown.

Posted by: LeAnne at November 1, 2005 06:52 AM

I think Roy would also make a very convincing Billy Idol.

Posted by: Sarie at November 1, 2005 07:25 AM

Your cats are so creative. Mine both dressed up as dust bunnies under the bed.

And the driving? I live in Seattle - what are we known for? Coffee, yes, but before that? Rain. NOBODY HERE CAN DRIVE IN THE RAIN. Took us an HOUR today to do a 15 minute drive. Because it RAINED. Though, come to think of it, it might be because of all the transplanted Californians.

Posted by: Patti at November 1, 2005 12:06 PM

Sobakowa for president.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 1, 2005 12:14 PM

I want to tag you, but I don't know how. I am so in the dark about this process that it may very well be that all I have to do is tell you you've been tagged - I have no idea.

Dreaded thought - have you already BEEN tagged by this particular tag? Oh, no!

Well, you'll see it on my blog, and if you don't like it, you can pretend I screwed up tagging you and you never got it.
