When in doubt, post a cat picture.

My Henry has water issues, too. He can't take a drink (from the spanking clean bowl, filled with Brita'd water) without first doing a little front-paw tap dance all around the bowl. Tap-tap, scoop-scoop (excuse me, this is NOT the little box!), tap-tap, quarter turn, repeat the Water Ceremony all around the bowl for 11+ years and leave mama shaking her head in puzzlement.

I didn't get him and his sister June (yes, my sibling cats were named after the first NC-17 movie - they were named when I got them...) until they were nearly a year old. Their past is murky - I think they must have spent their formative year with Moonies or Freemasons, some place with strict guidelines - June likes nothing more than to break out in the living room and, while I hold her over my left arm and dance, lean back and groove to "Smooth" - it's her favorite!

so when do i get to make out with your cats? because everytime i kiss the monitor my boss thinks i'm crazy.

Bob's twin Chandler just brought me her ball to play fetch. She too has issues.

My cat is still wondering where the water comes from in her water bowl and when the glug glug happens when it pour water in, she must, even from a deep sleep, see what is happening and if she can find out where the water is coming from! Cats, you gotta love them.

Posted by: Roszell at September 13, 2005 09:41 AM

my cats have a little water fight throwing pawfuls at each other before they'll drink.

Posted by: vanessa at September 13, 2005 10:20 AM

My cat does that thing with his paw too. Sometimes he even gets a little overaggressive and knocks the glass over. Then he stares at the water all over like he's not sure which part to attack first.

Posted by: Tish at September 13, 2005 10:21 AM

We had a crisis in our house when Doodles insisted on knocking over every single water bowl we tried just to watch the water run across the floor (imagine 6 other cats staring at their liquid sustanance disappearing and then their look of disgust at the perp). We finally ended up getting a 12" diameter ceramic dog water dish. Even now, 3 years later, he will attempt to knock it over. Which in itself, is pretty dang amusing.

Posted by: Dusa at September 13, 2005 10:30 AM

Yes but at least he's not insisting on a martini glass...well, not yet!

Posted by: Lesli at September 13, 2005 10:44 AM

I love your kitty pics! One of my cats loves to drink out of the glass of water I keep next to my bed at night. Of course I can't drink from it after he has...so I don't know why I continue putting the glass next to my bed--knowing full well he's going to drink from it.
My other cat drinks directly from the faucet, and the toilet. I have to keep the lid down because of him. The bathroom is his favorite place to hang out.
I'm half-way to being a crazy cat lady...my tiny apartment can only fit two cats...but I wish I had more, like you! :)

Posted by: astasky at September 13, 2005 10:55 AM

Sunny drinks water by dipping his right paw oh-so-daintily into his bowl, then licking his paw dry. It is a very long, laborious process.

Picasso knocks over water bowls to see the water run across the floor, or puts his favorite toys into the water bowl to see what will happen. (Why is my mommy yelling?)

Ziggy likes to play fetch, too!

And what does Stinky P. Boo, cat extraordinaire do? She sleeps...a lot.

Posted by: Bad Hippie at September 13, 2005 10:58 AM

When they scratch around a bowl like that, they're ostensibly inviting you to join them.

I can't say I've ever tried it though.

Bob's Thoughts...

Soba was right. Act weird and the camera lady thinks you have special needs.... and she's putty in your paws. Bring on the catnip!

Posted by: Lucky at September 13, 2005 11:03 AM

Hambut loves water. He once tried to jump in the shower with me just to play in the water.
He loves baths. He loves faucets that drip and waits with baited anticipation for someone to "drop" an ice cube from the ice maker. (He's even figured out how to jump up and hit the lever for the ice maker but got scolded so he doesn't do it at midnight any longer)

Posted by: Kari at September 13, 2005 11:04 AM

Bob is adorable!

My oldest cat will try to get the last of the milk left in my daughter's glass by dipping his paw way in and then licking his paw. We try not to let him get milk (bad for kitty's digestive system), but he is a very determined milk drinker.

Otherwise, no cute drinking habits. But my youngest cat tries to curl up in a ball before he's laying down, thus walking with his head curved down and eventually tumbling into a ball. Cute!

At least Bob uses a glass. My Zoe prefers the toilet. Actually, she's just plain facinated by toilets. Loves to wach them flush, she'll look in, then under, like she's trying to figure out where the water goes. We have to be really careful and remember to put the lid down.

Posted by: Susan at September 13, 2005 11:37 AM

Scruffy used to like to drink out of the aquarium...and then sit and SMACK her lips like yum yum best water I ever had (fish piss water)...
once in a while she fell in!!

Posted by: cheryl at September 13, 2005 11:58 AM

Is Bob single?

Posted by: Pants at September 13, 2005 12:00 PM

my cat refused to drink out of anything but a coffee mug for awhile. given my penchant for leaving cups of coffee around the house, she got a nasty shot of caffeine more than a few times!

Posted by: betsy at September 13, 2005 12:16 PM

My cat Honey does that too, except her water bowl is down low, so it sort of looks like she is doing yoga as she drinks. Perhaps we can set Honey and Bob up? They seem like a match made in heaven.

Posted by: Ellen at September 13, 2005 12:22 PM

ok, so i am having a yuckyy day and am not happy..this made me laugh..thanks

Posted by: michelle at September 13, 2005 12:46 PM

My Tortie has issues with my printer. She can be in the other room, in the closet, in a box and she will hear the printer start up and come bolting. I have a photo of her laying ON the printer claiming it as her own.

No water issues in the house except me. I can only drink from covered containers because I don't want cat hair in my drink.

This is for Susan and anyone else whose cats are a little too fascinated with the toilet:

There is a behavior modification program on Animal Planet called "Barking Mad" - it's the best! There was a Turkish Van cat, a breed that loves water and swimming, who made a nuisance of herself hanging out in the bathroom all the time, sticking her pretty nose down the toilet. (It's even better because this is a British program, so everybody sounds so dignified discussing the plumbing!) The solution was to set up a small fountain - it looked like terra cotta, basically a receptacle about the size of a big quiche pan, and a gurgling, self-recycling fountain on top. The cat was very happy and stopped trying to do the backstroke in the john.

Posted by: jeanne at September 13, 2005 02:11 PM

Yeah, but don't we all have issues?

Posted by: Krista at September 13, 2005 02:23 PM

I keep finding paw prints in the water bowl. I think the knittens actually STAND in it to drink water. I shall try to catch them at it some time soon.

Posted by: Rabbitch at September 13, 2005 02:41 PM

My cat will only drink water from the bathroom sink, in the morning while I'm getting ready for work.
Plus, he's only got 3 legs due to a nasty car chase, and can't jump up into the sink anymore. Instead, he sits and yowls at me until I put him up there. Then, the water MUST be at a slight trickle so he can bat it around, and lick the large drops. When he's finished, he curls up in the sink meowing, which is my cue to get him down.
Silly cat!

One of our cats, Tiger, has to paw the ground like he is in the litter box while he drinks water and out dog, Cooper, sticks his whole snout in the water dish so that he suffocates while drinking...apparently I house idiots...but we love them anyways.

Posted by: Jaimi at September 13, 2005 02:59 PM

My dearest Guinevere will waltz across the coffee table, sniff at my husbands glass and reject it. She will then saunter on over to mine (yes, I know the cats don’t belong on the coffee table) and slurp away. We have even sipped at and then switched glasses to try and trick her, but she ALWAYS chooses mine.

She must think we are his harem.

Posted by: Stacy at September 13, 2005 04:33 PM

haha.
at least he's not munching on ice.

Posted by: keohinani at September 13, 2005 05:39 PM

Bob doesn't have issues. He's just maintaining his balance! Uh-huh.

Posted by: jen at September 13, 2005 10:32 PM

My cat, Me, will play fetch. He even plays by himself. We have a koosh ball on a stretchy string, and he pulls it out as far as he can, lets go, and then chases after it.

Issues.

Posted by: Ree at September 14, 2005 05:18 AM

My cat Loki prefers to lick the water left in the bottom of the bathtub after I take a shower rather than drink the nice fresh Brita water from his bowl. He does this funky peek-into-the-tub thing, then gingerly jumps in, then paws at the puddles and drops, then starts lapping up whatever water is left. And then he starts in on the drips from the spigot. Oh boy. Then again, Loki is a little bit neurotic -- traumatizing first year with crazy college kids that shuffled him from one apartment to the next, surviving off leftover pizza and chips left from the party the night (or week?) before... Why can't everyone love their cats and take a thousand photos of them, like all of us erm... knitters do?!

I LOVE Barking Mad! My son and I watch it, and we have been using techniques on other students and co-workers.

Wow, a lot of cats have drinking problems.

Posted by: Patti at September 14, 2005 10:02 AM

Two cats.

One will only drink out of the bathroom sink, which must be left dripping at all times. As issues go...minor, yes?

The other cannot conceive of the possibility that there might actually be water in her bowl (which has been in the same place for three years and has never dropped below 3/4 full that entire time) until, fed up with her pitiful dehydrated wailing, you plunk her in front of it and literally push her nose into the water. After the necessary sputtering and spraying of snotty nose-water around the feeding area, she drinks.

Sigh.

our almost one year old cat, pavel does that, also. he is entranced by water, it is crazy, he sticks his paws, dirty usually into the waterbowl and will often splash most of it out onto the floor, so we put a bowl in the tub for him to play in so he doesn't sully the water that all the cats have to drink. i have never seen a cat that loves water like him, but he really is entranced by it, since he was a wee baby.

I have, just this weekend, adopted a 6 month old kitten. He is very neat with his food, but the water??? He has to put his paw in the dish, and fling the water at his face. After he is drenched, he will then lap some water up from the dish, but steps gingerly around the mess on the floor? Weird?? I have never seen another cat do this? Has anyone else?

Posted by: Amy at November 14, 2005 11:25 AM

I stumbled upon this site on accident, but was very amused with the cat-antics. I have to give a salute to Ree, because my cats name is Loki as well. Its a fitting name, and I think my cat knows he's named after the Norse God of Mischief....maybe I should have named him Sleepy?

I have two cats, both Maine Coons, although one is of questionable background. She has some odd calico markings on her face. She is our youngest her name is Sushi. She drinks only my water from my bedside, with ice. Sometimes this is annoying especially if I get thirsty at 4:00 am and take a big swig of cat fur. Sushi cleans her paws and body with the water before she drinks. She also makes the regular drinking bowl unfit by dropping household items into it. Sometimes it is pieces of plastic, hair bands, ink pens, lint balls, play toys, you name it. If she can carry it she will dump it into her drinking water. So, I found the solution. I still put a bowl out for them in the kitchen, but at night I put out a decoy glass at my bedside with water and ice for Sushi and put my own glass behind the lamp hidden by the kleenex, now she drinks from the decoy glass. My husband works from home and during the day he refills the decoy glass, with ice. I am uncertain why Sushi plays with the drinking water or feels the need to pollute it and or clean herself in it before she drinks. She was a very young kitten when we adopted her (8 weeks) and had been born in the shelter, So I don't think anything could have influenced her behavior to that extent. We just just laugh at her antics and try to keep the water clean. The cat is not normal. Her worst trait is that she will lay on her back and scream horrible cat screams if you close the bathroom door without letting her accompany you. And this is when everyone is home. And she does not stalk like a normal cat, she gallops like a big dog all over the house. You can hear her coming from anywhere in the house. Chop Suey our older cat, finds her amusing and spends a lot of time just looking at her like she is an alien. They get along well and he plays with her sometimes and has taught her how to use the scratch board vs. the couch. He got very upset with her for scratching the couch when she first arrived. (he has always known that was a no no) He pounced on her and gave her a stern warning. She avoids the couch mostly now and if chop sees her, he goes after her. She will go to the couch and jump up just to get him going sometimes, and then she will run to the scratch board or the perch daring him to chase her. Nice board. Thanks for the place to talk about my kitties.
