Shake your bootie.
Candi Jensen was on "Knitty Gritty" last season demonstrating how to make the CUTEST DAMN BABY ITEMS EVER... hand-knitted suede Ugg booties.
[ click here for the pattern ]
I know that ya'll hate Uggs and think they are the ugliest thing since shoulder pads. But I am here to tell you, I live in the Valley and I wear my Uggs (which is shorthand for "UGliest shoe on God's green earth") loud and proud. And I am not alone. The weather has been surprisingly cold here lately -- yesterday it only got up to about 80 degrees downtown! -- and this morning it was even OVERCAST (gasp! how on earth with the little Los Angelenos survive? will there be price-gouging on Starbucks and fizz-control hair gel? Will women in spaghetti-strap tank tops have to wrap 8-foot long skinny scarves around their necks? Will the world stop spinning on its axis?) but anyway, the point is that Ugg boots have been spotted already on the streets of Los Angeles.
It's the age-old question: which comes first -- the fall weather or the Ugg boots? Do people get so desperate to wear their Uggs and skinny scarves that they collectively bring on the Fall weather? Or does Fall bring out the Uggs?
We may never know the answer. It's a chicken-and-egg debate, really, best left to the great minds of paradoxical philosophy.
Me? I'm just over here contemplating your bootie. I've been, in fact, feeling on your bootie. Since that show aired, I have been dying for someone around me to get knocked up so I could make them, and finally (finally!) a girl at work fell into the family way and I started tapping that bootie.
Except ... well, I have READ and CAREFULLY FOLLOWED the pattern. And I really have enjoyed making my first bootie call. But so far my bootie looks REALLY different than the picture on the DIY website. It looks, maybe ... not so much like something that would hold a foot at all.

Ha! No, no, it looks fine, really. Ahem.

Ahem. Tee hee. It makes me giggle.
Posted by: marissa at September 16, 2005 10:25 AM
Um. Perhaps it could double a jock strap? For a very unfortunate man? I'm pretty sure there is a way to insert the word "porn" in here somewhere too.
Posted by: Tiffany at September 16, 2005 10:26 AM
I hope your co-worker is expecting a little boy...
Posted by: Martha at September 16, 2005 10:30 AM
You are right on with the booty--shake it baby. Just keep following the pattern and they will look fine. I made my first pair of baby booties after I had been knitting for about a year and I thought they were confusing as hell. When it's done, it will make sense. Shake it baby, shake it!
Posted by: Mona at September 16, 2005 10:41 AM
I made the Ugg baby booties and they looked exactly like your version - with a similar "codpiece" effect. Fortunately, I found that if you just keep knitting along everything will turn out just fine, and the soft fluffy trim somehow makes the whole thing look ok.
Posted by: MeBeth at September 16, 2005 10:47 AM
i love it.
now i want to make booties too.
Posted by: kendra at September 16, 2005 10:50 AM
sure, sure ... first with the "porn" ... and now knitting this booty to look like a jockstrap ... could easily make one think your mind is nothing but in the gutter! But me?.. no, no ... I've got your back, woman ... I know this is simply one of those lower face veils for Kilroy. Right?
See? .. completely non-pornographic.

Beevis and Butthead laugh. Have I mentioned that Mark has been gone almost 3 weeks now? He comes home soon - very soon. The booties - they made me laugh.
Posted by: Crystal at September 16, 2005 11:22 AM
I saw the Candi Jensen Candi Babies book and HAD to buy it because the patterns were SO DAMN CUTE! It has be Ugg booties in there along with a matching sweater - so adorable.
Anyways - since buying the book I've been going around saying that someone needs to get knocked up as well just so that I can make some cute little baby booties and sweaters.

Apropos of nothing, pornpornpornpornpornpornpornpornpornpornpornporn.
I'm gonna knit those booties. I *love* baby stuff - they knit up so quickly!! Please be sure to post the FO!!!
-D.

When I saw that Knitty Gritty episode, I fell in love with those booties and had to make a pair right way. Don't worry. They will turn out fine. Mine looked just like yours at that stage. Just keeping following the pattern and they will come together.
Posted by: Krickit at September 16, 2005 11:27 AM
Well first off thanks for posting that link to the pattern, too cute. Second, oh my, actually though if you look at their picture to the left side of the screen, you'll see the same protrudence, I'm guessing it's all in how the shot was photographed. Yours will be fine, and thanks again for sharing the link.
Posted by: Rebekah at September 16, 2005 11:30 AM
haha...guess you're got it on the brain!
Those are so cute. I debated making those for my friend that had twins, but I went with baby socks instead. Seemed easier :)
Posted by: ck at September 16, 2005 11:38 AM
Apparently you're also know knitting porn inadvertently. Hee. Heeee.
Posted by: Dawn at September 16, 2005 11:45 AM
Okay I'm with ya on the Ugg Boots, Luv 'em, dont care who else does, they rock. And your baby ones look like they are turning out just fine. I know they look a bit phallic now, but all will work out in the end :)
Posted by: Shannon at September 16, 2005 11:46 AM
Bootie central, knitting, and porn in the same post. Awesome
Laurie, you made my day. Rock on with your bad self.
Posted by: Terby at September 16, 2005 11:50 AM
Oh, oh, I'm knocked up! Make them for me ;) And I'm local, sorta, if local is still local behind the Orange Curtian.... I agree on the UGG boots, I've been having terrible urges for fall to wear mine. And I'm going to Havasu this weekend, where it's hotter. Bleh, wrong direction.
Posted by: Susan at September 16, 2005 11:54 AM
Oh my god, you made me the most inappropriate snorting laughter noises at work. Bad Laurie! Bad!
Now everyone will know I'm not doing data entry like I'm supposed to. *hangs head in shame*
Posted by: Sarah at September 16, 2005 12:03 PM
Er, made me make, that is.
Posted by: Sarah at September 16, 2005 12:04 PM
"Er, made me make, that is."
uh Sarah ... might wanna rephrase that last one again. Just sayin'! ;)
Posted by: Kat at September 16, 2005 12:07 PM
The thing with booties is that they never ever look anything LIKE booties as you're knitting them. Just follow the pattern blindly, and you'll see in the end! I see a bootie toe, myself.
Posted by: Natalie at September 16, 2005 12:18 PM
Did you remember to do 8 rows of plain garter stitch after starting the second colour, and before starting the instep shaping?
Posted by: Andrea at September 16, 2005 12:23 PM
Andrea... uh? Huh? Are you serious? Where in the pattern does it say that? I know I am remedial, but ... what???
In other words, no I did not. It is not mentioned in the pattern, unless they do it in some tricky way with acronymns and invisible ink. Help. Help.
Posted by: laurie at September 16, 2005 12:26 PM
Ok, Andrea, YOU ARE FREAKING ME OUT. (Refer to my earlier freak out post, above.)
The patern gives you instructions for rows 1-10 at the top (it says 1-9, but at the top also says you knit all even rows 2-10)
... then gives instrustions for rows 11-8. Then says knit two inches in stockinette.
WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THE EIGHT ROWS OF PLAIN GARTER STITCH????
Posted by: laurie at September 16, 2005 12:28 PM
Oh.
My.
God.
I just laughed out loud at work, this is so funny.
Thank you so much for this entry.
Posted by: Cordelia at September 16, 2005 12:30 PM
Also, if this is true, it really explains a lot about my condition. For which there should be medication. You may have heard of my condition? Dumbassleheimers?
Posted by: laurie at September 16, 2005 12:30 PM
Would work understand that I have to go home RIGHT NOW and try to see if I can't get the same codpiece bootie result? Cause if so, I'm going to chase my boyfriend around the house with it.
Posted by: Gail at September 16, 2005 12:32 PM
Oh Jeezus. I am so mad. This pattern fooled me. The numering? That seems simple? NOT SIMPLE AT ALL. HATE YOU PATTERN.
Posted by: laurie at September 16, 2005 12:36 PM
Hey Laurie, after I saw that episode, I made a pair and then made like 3 more pair since everyone around me "had to have some!" There are no eight rows of garter stitch, she might have meant stockinette. Rows 11-18 are done in stockinette after switching to the lighter color, then you move on to the instep shaping. After the instep you do the two inches of stockinette. I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions, I'll be happy to try and help!
Posted by: Elizabeth at September 16, 2005 12:39 PM
Regardless of whether these turn out right or not, your pics are worth a million! Umm, and ignore the email I sent in the middle of the night after no sleep while on the endless business trip. It was the stress and whine speaking through the wine.
Posted by: Anmiryam at September 16, 2005 12:41 PM
Are you sure you didn't get that pattern from that German Strickolino guy? (Google him, but be prepared - *knitted anatomically-correct thong turtleneck unitards*). Wow - it really hurt to type that last sentence.
:D
Posted by: Kelli at September 16, 2005 12:42 PM
Ok. I HATE THIS PATTERN because prior to ya'll telling me about these mystery eight rows, I already knitted them all the way during my lunch break and now I feel stupid and hate all patterns.
Posted by: laurie at September 16, 2005 12:48 PM
Did you SEE the matching HAT? HATHATHATHATHAT????
ohmygoshsocute.
I have a 7 month old nephew. He cruises Mar Vista. Now he's going to OWN Mar Vista. Thanks for the link!

You know the word porn and your version of the bootie... Connection, a little bit. Thanks for giving me one of my daily chuckles!!
Posted by: Jennifer at September 16, 2005 01:01 PM
I saw this show a long time ago and SOOOOO love the booties! Love them! Want to make lots! No babies to make them for!
Posted by: ashbloem at September 16, 2005 01:10 PM
Laurie, at least your… “bootie” will not cause temporary blindness in children when it is finished and totally cute like I am sure ONE OF THESE is bound to do. Dear Lord.

Does that booty require batteries?

Come on. You added the little appendage on purpose just to make us laugh, didn't you? (it worked)
Posted by: jodi at September 16, 2005 01:49 PM
Priceless pic! I used to think Uggs were the dumbest trend in SoCal till I saw them in red. To die for. But I will not wear them because I am a rebel and winter boots in LA is kind of silly if you think about it. My cousin's wife had their second baby on Monday. Maybe he will get a hat in 6 months if he is lucky, but booties are definitely too hard. Can’t wait to see those cute booties when they’re finished.
Posted by: shananigans at September 16, 2005 03:41 PM
Laurie, I stared at that picture for almost ten minutes, trying to figure out how you made that little flap! Truly. I am flummoxed. (I love that word.)
Hey, after you finish the Candi booties - and is the matching hat the cutest thing in the universe, or what?! - if you aren't put off booties forever, you might want to try the baby booties in Kris Percival's book "Knitting Pretty." Love the book! Love the baby booties! I've made about 25 pairs in the last two years! Because every baby needs several pairs of booties, you know. And Ms Percival's are dead easy, and so cute. I love her snake scarf, too. (She says it's a wiggly worm scarf, but I always sew on a tongue and make it a snake. So damn cute!)
Posted by: Julie at September 16, 2005 03:45 PM
It looks like when you finished the sole (the dark brown) you skipped to the "Shape Instep" instead of doing this step:
Next
Change to larger needles and Hopalong Cassidy.
Rows 11,13,15,17: knit.
Rows 12,14,16,18: purl.
Frog the light color and do the "next" part THEN you can shape the instep and it will look just like the picture, I promise!
