You. Must. Make. THIS.

I have never seen anything funnier in my entire life. Annie Modesitt has a "Make Jennifer's Blanket" pattern on her site for the Runaway Bride's oh-so-chic headcovering, as seen on TV:

Jennifer Wilbanks, the Georgia runaway bride, is escorted by police through the airport in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Saturday, April 30, 2005. Wilbanks first told police she had been kidnapped. She later confessed that she got cold feet regarding her wedding and that's why she vanished for several days.(AP Photo/JOe Cavaretta)

This poor girl had some serious pressure. i mean 600 guests and 14 bridesmaids! That is not a wedding - that is a Vegas show!

Posted by: Crystal at May 3, 2005 10:24 AM

Is that like the reverse of a bridal veil?

Posted by: Geri at May 3, 2005 10:50 AM

the funniest. thing. EVER!!

Posted by: kristysf at May 3, 2005 10:55 AM

LOL funny!Martha needs a new knitted item to continue competing in the "make the ..." wars!

Posted by: stacyo at May 3, 2005 10:56 AM

Ow! Ow! Ow! I can't stop laughing! My face hurts! OMG I needed that! Thank you, Laurie :D

Posted by: Linda L. at May 3, 2005 10:57 AM

Is it just me, or do you smell another man in this whole scenario?

I mean, cold feet is one thing. But to buy a bus ticket THE WEEK PRIOR and go all the way to LAS VEGAS and then NEW MEXICO from Georgia? Seems very fishy to me. No?

And what the hell is she hiding her face for anyway? It's not like we all haven't seen her face a jillion times, already.

W. :)

I was having such a bad day, until I read your post. Thank you so much for the well needed laugh!

I now have to clean bits of my lunch off of my keyboard, but it was totally worth it. I'm just glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I saw this.

Thanks!

I like how the instructions say: bind off lossely, wear on head.

Posted by: Maria at May 3, 2005 11:43 AM

Sorry, I meant "Steam block. Place over head", hee hee.

Posted by: Maria at May 3, 2005 11:44 AM

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.

Posted by: Kat at May 3, 2005 11:52 AM

That is beyond funny!

Posted by: Tana at May 3, 2005 11:59 AM

Saw a post on the About.com Knitting Forum before I got to your blog this morning. ROFLMAO!!! My sides hurt!!! Thanks for the laugh endorphins!!! Email me!!

Posted by: CatBookMom at May 3, 2005 12:04 PM

That is hilarious. She's probably just hiding her high-as-a-kite speed freak eyes.

Posted by: ShelbyD at May 3, 2005 12:14 PM

Love, Love, Love it!! That poor woman--I can't IMAGINE! Yeah, yeah...the wedding, the family, but really--THE BLANKET???!! Could she not have found anything more attractive to cover up with? LOL!

Posted by: amanda at May 3, 2005 12:21 PM

"Could she not have found anything more attractive to cover up with" me thinks there is a wedding veil not seeing much use she could have chosen instead!!

Posted by: needles54 at May 3, 2005 12:27 PM

I don't like to cast aspersions on someone's creations. Really. But that is the most hideous thing I have ever seen. Even if she does bear a slight resemblance to Olive Oyl on crack, she still looks better without the blanket!

Posted by: Bridget at May 3, 2005 12:28 PM

ohmygod...didn't want Martha's poncho, but might have to make a runaway bride blanket!

Posted by: Amy at May 3, 2005 01:12 PM

Did you happen to notice that in SOME photos the blanket is right side out - then in others it is WRONG side out?

Hmmmmm - what could Law & Order CI deduce from THAT, I wonder?

Do you think she knit that up as she was riding the bus to Vegas? What's knit in Vegas should STAY in Vegas.

Posted by: Annie at May 3, 2005 01:46 PM

Ha Ha *lmao* I won't be making one, but I love that the instructions are there just in case!

Posted by: April at May 3, 2005 02:09 PM

If you're a "runaway bride", why on earth do you run to Las Vegas? Don't people make a run to Vegas to get married? It makes you wonder if the groom was a "no show". He probably left her and Elvis standing at the altar. Of course Albuquerque was the next logical choice after that. Ummmm, yeah. Didn't she cut her hair? Maybe the blanket has something to do with the haircut.

Thank you for linking this. I totally had to blog it. My sister and I were cracking up over the idea last night because we could not seem to avoid seeing coverage of this stupid story. Make it stop!

Posted by: Amy at May 3, 2005 02:19 PM

I have a feeling the blanket was given to her with the clothing and tote bag she received from Albuquerque Victim's Assistance. It was probably knit by a charity knitter who thought it would be given to a child who'd just been through a traumatic experience. Because we all know that if Ms. Wilbanks knew how to knit, she never would have gotten so stressed out in the first place!
But, I bet, she doesn't give back all the "goodies" she got by playing victim.

p.s. My face doesn't hurt from laughing anymore... now my sides ache!

Hello--we are neighbors. I live near Ventura and Coldwater (Coldwater and Moorpark, actually). If you ever start up a knitting group in Studio City, I would love to join. By the way,I LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog!

hi all...i've been hanging around for a couple days now and am only now feeling un-shy enough to introduce myself and officially commment instead of just talking to myself about how hilarious this all is...
sadly, i am not a knitter but only because i have never been taught...ok, i was taught once but i was like 7 and my memory was even worse then than it is now...but even aside from my sad knitting status, i can TOTALLY still appreciate the humour of this whole hat blanket thing...if she was trying to look funny, couldn't she have found a nice chicken viking hat to put on instead? now tTHAT would have been funny!

Posted by: bezbabe at May 3, 2005 04:30 PM

Holy Crap that cracked me up. I love your blog!!!

Posted by: Jenn at May 3, 2005 05:39 PM

Aw. A blushing (not)bride.

Posted by: Becca at May 3, 2005 05:40 PM

It was only a matter of time!!

Posted by: Deb at May 3, 2005 07:27 PM

You know, I hadn't even heard about this case until I saw a picture of the woman with the blanket over her head. I only spotted it because the blanket was handmade. Isn't it funny how that works! We always notice the things others have made.

Posted by: Amanda at May 3, 2005 08:05 PM

This is too freakin' funny!!! I'm laughing so hard I can't stand it.

Unfortunately, why do I keep thinking that she was in an abusive relationship and couldn't think of any other way to leave?

Posted by: michelle at May 3, 2005 09:20 PM

Maybe Lion, Bernat, Interweave, etc can all have competing patterns!

Posted by: Erica at May 4, 2005 06:42 AM

I don't know what's funnier, the blanket or "her high-as-a-kite speed freak eyes" comment left by ShelbyD. Those eyes really scare me. The fact that the groom is so eager to marry her anyway really makes me wonder if he is the real reason she split.

I'm totally addicted to your blog; hope that doesn't give me "speed freak eyes" too.

Are you kidding me? That is Red Heart acrylic all the way baby....

I had to laugh after reading all these comments - I happen to know right where the original runaway bride blanket was made and for what reason! My sister in Albuquerque NM has been knitting and crocheting blankets for Project Linus - this group donates the finished products to churches, shelters, hospitals, fire departments and police. The idea is that should a child be involved in a trauma, the blankets will offer them some security. My sister never expected to see the blanket she made on the front page of newspapers all over the country! One good thing to come out of this is that Project Linus has received some publicity - Project Linus is a great organization - look them up and make a donation to a good cause - they can always use more blankets!
