Bob Has A Job

Bob is currently in training for Cat Cuteness Olympics, inspired by Wendy's super-kitty Lucy, who is in training for the Kitty Sleeping Olympics.

He may not be able to compete with Lucy on luxuriousness of tail or feline sleeping prowess, but here he gives her a run for the money in the Cuteness Competition.

Nice people + one ugly hat

I think we need pictures of the hat, before the S n B wizards get their hands on it.

I really enjoy reading your blog and seeing pictures of cute kitties and knitting projects. Keep it up!

Yay for Bob!!!

Posted by: Mary in Boston at May 19, 2005 09:32 AM

we refer to the contortion cuteness pose at kit sculpture at my house.

so, you've inspired me a little. i'm going to to stalk my local stitch n bitch next week and see about joining. things i have learned from laurie: wear black. i, too, have the excessive sweating thing.

Posted by: jenn at May 19, 2005 09:33 AM

Is s n' b open to all? would you advise someone who has NEVER knit before go? or is it best to learn through some other means?

Posted by: michele at May 19, 2005 09:38 AM

Oh yeah, I'm a sweater. Can't make one, though HAH HAH. OK, yup. Me with the coffee. Anyway. So yes, go to your local snb!! I perspired for the first hour and people just politely ignored it.

The hat!! It is so damn funny. I call it mushroom hat, or Shroom Hat for short. Because I apparently need to nickname everything, but whatever. I can't wait to take pics of Shan in the Shroom Hat, too funny.

Posted by: laurie at May 19, 2005 09:38 AM

Shroom Hat! Bob!

Perfection all around. And, um, if you were serious, I will confess that I am a sweater, too. And that the only actual sweater I ever knitted had one arm significantly longer than the other and a giant hole in the body.

But I persevere!

Posted by: Jonna at May 19, 2005 09:40 AM

Oh, I am serious. I was sweating like... ok, have you seen that movie Broadcast News? In the one scene where he sweats like he's taking a shower? Yeah. That's me when I get nervous.

Why couldn't I just have a nervous tic or something? But no. I get the sweating.

Michele -- I emailed you :) Yes, snb is open to all! Free shroom hat! LOL

Posted by: laurie at May 19, 2005 09:44 AM

Might see you tonight...I think I can squeeze it in before I join my Star Wars lovin' friends at Universal for a movie and good times.

Posted by: Christie at May 19, 2005 10:02 AM

Oh, Bob! The perfectly placed tail, for optimum coverage and cuteness. When he lies with his back foot up against the wall like that, does the foot keep sliding, unable to keep a grip? That's what mine do.

Oh look. You got me all gooey over a cute cat. I'd might as well go join one of those damned baby animal lovers communities now or something.

Posted by: jodi at May 19, 2005 10:06 AM

Are you the hat expert? I have been thinking about making a hat for a friend's baby but I am afraid of hats. Have you made many? Since lately, my knitting projects seem to start with "Pour yourself a glass of wine" I haven't been trying anything to challenging.

Posted by: Krickit at May 19, 2005 10:06 AM

Krickit, I'm sorry. Did you ask if I was the hat expert? hahahahahahahah. Um, ok. YES!!! I am!!! I am the expert of mushroom big head hats!! LOL

I'm on the quest to create a perfect hat. As soon as I do -- and I am serious about this -- I plan to post a full blow-by-blow description here so we can all make hats together. I love making hats. The first one I did turned out great, but this last one... mushroom hat. It is so ugly!! I'm going to stitch n bitch tonight to get the group advice on what to do to fix it, and I will make another hat, and hopefully be able to finally post a decent set of hat instructions.

Can you tell I am obsessed?

Posted by: laurie at May 19, 2005 10:21 AM

I just wanta scratch Bobs wittle tummy!

BTW I'd be totally mortified if the hat suggestions I sent you led you down the wrong path. I hope you figure it out!

Posted by: Michelle at May 19, 2005 10:23 AM

All Bob, all the time!

He, I've got a secret and I won't tell....

Posted by: La at May 19, 2005 10:25 AM

that was s'posed to be HEY, not he....stupid keyboard not typing what I want it to type, but what I tell it to type...mumblemumblemumble...

Posted by: La at May 19, 2005 10:27 AM

Laurie, you are truly going to have to help me fix my scarf tonight. How did 5 minutes of knitting go so awry? See you in a few hours!

I can't believe Bob patiently let you take all those photos -- soooo cute!

Posted by: jen at May 19, 2005 10:28 AM

Okay, those pics freak. Me. Out. And you know WHY!

Bob is very cute!!!

Posted by: ~drew emborsky~ at May 19, 2005 10:29 AM

Hubba hubba Bob! You are one hot kitty!

Posted by: Lucy at May 19, 2005 10:34 AM

hey, laurie, is knitting in the round a necessary part of your hat making? i have a really cute, super-easy pattern for a rolled-brim hat. i've made it twice and both times it has turned out normal head sized. i'll gladly e-mail it to you. or regular mail. regular mail is exciting.

Posted by: jenn at May 19, 2005 10:35 AM

Did anyone say cat olympics?

Posted by: June at May 19, 2005 10:57 AM

dear bob,
i want to rub your belly. badly. and i don't say that to all the boys i meet, either. (my momma didn't raise no 'ho.)
luv,
stacy

Posted by: stacyo at May 19, 2005 10:59 AM

Yes, Bob is very cute. But his poses of cuteness seem to me very like tricky poses of Ninja Cat Slashing. This technique involves the bait of the snuggly cat tummy, the purr, the eye contact which communicates "Pleeeeze rub my tummy" followed in rapid succession by the razor-sharp claws of the front paws grabbing the tummy-rubbing wrist with the simultaneous kicking of the razor-sharp claws of the hind feet which causes fine, crimson-beaded lines to appear on the pale and tender inside of the tummy-rubbing forearm, not without a modicum of pain on the part of the tummy-rubber. Sounds like an Olympic event to me.

Posted by: Madeleine at May 19, 2005 11:13 AM

There's something about little kitty tummy that is both adorable and kind of revealing -- here, look at my shaggy soft spot! One of my boys has "tiger belly," which means that when he runs it sways from side to side.

Awwww, Bob! Little butterscotch kitty.

Posted by: Anne at May 19, 2005 11:39 AM

The sight of a cute squishy kitty on his back makes me want to saw "awwww, pwitty kitty, moomoomoo squishy squisy" which frankly sickens and horrifies me but I can't help myself. Apparently some women react that way to babies. I am not one of them. But give me a furry kitty belly and I melt.

And regarding the shroom hat -- it is eerily, freakily identical to a purse I just knitted and felted, same colors and stripes and everything. If you're using wool and it just doesn't turn out hat-like, just throw it in the washer and call it a purse. We can be Purse Twins.

These make me wnat to run right home and take new cute pics of my dogs to put up! They can not be out-cuted by your cats! Tonight I may have to play Dress Up with the dogs and put up sme new cute pics. Then I will invite Minou to come check them out - I love her dress up pics.

Posted by: Crystal at May 19, 2005 12:32 PM

Oh! I meant to ask: What yarn did you use for the first hat? I really liked it.

Posted by: Anne at May 19, 2005 12:32 PM

You are hilarious! I love your blog and I love Bob!

Posted by: Amy Lu at May 19, 2005 12:58 PM

Woohoo! Stitch n' Bitch tonight!

Posted by: Laina at May 19, 2005 01:29 PM

Just discovered your blog today, thanks to Wendy and Lucy. Moi aussi being a person in the process (divorce, that is - also left by a mid-life crisis person - actually he called it a "mid-life-awakening" =} yeah, right!), I was interested in your "about me" page. It could be worse - you could be 46 like me, with 3 kids you have to worry about! Good luck!

Love the kitties - we only have 3! We do have a hairy little American Eskimo Dog, though, who THINKS she's a cat! Does that count?

I want to see the hat, too!

Posted by: AnitaM at May 19, 2005 05:49 PM

Oh you have the cutest kitties! If yours are going for the Olympic team, then I think mine are also. But in the Grecco Roman wrestling category. *sigh* I can not get my girls to stop wrestling!

Love the hat and love your blog! :)

You make me want to start knitting again! Haven't knitted in 20 years, got into counted cross stitch instead. Unfortunately, I've got some nerve damage and can't hold the little needles anymore. I'm going to try the knitting tho. I even have the materials... ironically, I'd bought them for a sister-in-law, but heck... she can get her own stuff!

btw: I was dumped at age 25, by a husband of 7 years (yah I was 18)... he said I was too old, and that he could "do better". Oddly enough, he came back a year later, discovering he couldn't do better...heheeehheheheh Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Haven't seen the fool since 1987.....and don't miss him a bit. Found my true love 6 years ago, married him 5 years ago and life is pretty good all in all.

I have a feeling there is a man out there (if you want him) that will see you, realize that you are the catch of a lifetime, and pursue you at length...have fun runnin'.......

Nancy

Hope they can help! That is, I hope it's not beyond help hehe. Just kidding! You have a beautiful kitty :)

Posted by: Vicki at May 19, 2005 07:55 PM

Love the pics of Bob. I swear if I keep reading your blog much longer I'm going to actually like cats. lol Too bad they make my itch. Same for dogs. :( Thank God I do well with poodles though. I'm also jealous hearing about your SnB group. I'm stuck here in Iowa and I don't know a soul that knits or crochets. My nearest LYS is 90 mins away. *sniff* OK time to go back to looking at pics of Bob so I can have a giggle before bed. hehehehe

Posted by: Becky at May 19, 2005 10:33 PM

Love Bob! It was great seeing you tonight at SNB!

Posted by: Regina at May 19, 2005 11:08 PM

I must be retarded or missing something, but I really love your hat. I also really love your blog! I read it every day before I go out the world of size 0 - 4 (a lb. over and they're suicidal) white,5'5" young chicks, pushing a baby and pregnant with another and dressing to share their inverted bellybuttons with the rest of the world. not pretty!! I am a real sized person - 5'9"ish, 1XX lbs ish (I gained 30 when I turned 50) with red, curly hair who snorts when she laughs!I live in a snotty town in Connecticut where being poor means your house was less than $1,000,000. So, I'm pretty poor.

However, I have four cats (which makes me very, very sexy) two dogs - a lab (not laidback) and a pitt mix (barks and lunges at children) and a husband (who is a man which just makes him weird by definition).

It is my foregone conclusion that all cats named "Bob" are incredibly cute, adroit, clever and just steal your heart away! and put their sisters (in my case) in the back seat attentionwise! It just can't be helped! and what is it about belly-rubbing resulting in kittyfoot kickboxing winding up in bloody gouges on the insides of your forearm. and why, stupidly, do people like me repeat the same action and expect different results?

Posted by: MARY ERDMAN at May 20, 2005 07:43 AM

You make me miss my cats so much and make me want to get some more!

By the way, the committee for the Cat Cuteness Olympics has voted and decided that the use of catnip to enhance cuteness is thoroughly encouraged!

I used to pour catnip on the floor for the brother and sister cats I had. The would go into a spastic breakdancing session rolling around in it until they were CATatonic.

Posted by: Pete at May 20, 2005 07:53 AM

Hey Laurie, when you're ready, I'll introduce you to my brother. No, the one who ISN'T married, silly

My favorite quote:
The Washington Post: "There's no danger of anyone ever dumbing it down. A dumber downer would potentially be lethal. It would have to be buried in lead for 10,000 years, like nuclear waste ... An execrable mess by absolutely any standard, though of course these days the idea of standards is just all too uncool. It was America's crummiest home video." re: Brittney and Kevin
